There's a thin beam of light from last night's debacle...

M.S. : 10/12/2018 5:00 pm
...the delusions and misconceptions of what this team needs to contend again have fallen away and lay shattered on the ground.

What is left is the harsh light of reality that management can no longer miss or avoid.

The next steps will be painful, but absolutely necessary:

(1) A conversation with Eli that provides him with one of two choices: (a) gracefully retire after this season and we will honor you accordingly; or, (b) be cut from the team;

(2) Draft the best QB coming out of college next year, which should be very easy because the Giants will hold the #1 pick;

(3) Go whole hog on offensive linemen in the Draft and FA. We need to double-down and support in any way we can the new face of this franchise: Saquon Barkley

(4) Do not pay one cent over fair market value to keep Landon Collins; if he balks, let him walk;

(5) Let Sterling Shepard walk. We need receivers who can get open by virtue of their height;

(6) Convert Evan Engram to WR;

(7) No one on this team in un-tradeable (save for Saquon Barkley). If anyone wants to talk about OBJ, Damon Harrison or Janoris Jenkins... take their call and take a discount if need be;

(8) Do not be afraid to fire Coach Pat Shurmur either during, after or before the start of the 2019 season. He failed a huge test last night and his players quit on him in the biggest game of his nascent coaching career with the Giants. That shows a lack of respect which is the death knell for coaches.

Several BBIers have said that NFL franchises can turn things around quickly, but they haven't been paying attention. With fat, juicy contracts tied up in non-performers and the worst draft record over the past six years, the Giants have now displaced the Cleveland Browns as the laughing stock of the NFL.

We're in for a multi-year re-build. Let the wrecking ball fly.
I'm hoping you have some "next steps" regarding the defense..

..not signing Collins, Harrison or Jenkins would create some bigger holes than there are now.

One of the biggest factors in winning NFL games is a 4th quarter pass rush. Where the hell is that coming from?

See you in 2021 (optimistically 2020) when this team will be competitive again
I don't think the multiyear rebuild exists in the NFL

Every team tries to improve every year.

Look at Jax, a laughingstock franchise that Coughlin almost took to the SB with a few right pieces.

Long time subescriber to the concept that ball-control by the offense is far and away a team's best defense. Keep the dogs fresh and they will bite. Even medicore ones.
With you on all but

The trade Beckham even at a discount. Doing so would be reactionary. You’ll never get what he’s worth and financially it doesn’t make sense.

I have no problem with Beckham head butting a cooling fan or yelling on the sideline. It has zero impact on the game and to me, shows how much he wants to win and how frustrated he is. Honestly, I’d feel better about the team if more players were melting down on the sideline. It at least would show they care. They looked lifeless last night, with the exception of Barkley.

I find it funny how half the fan base just wants the Giants to be rid of Beckham, meanwhile Beckham’s complaints about the Giants thus far are consistent with the majority of fan complaints.
I would give PS a chance

I like everything you said except (8), I would give PS another season. We don't want to be the revolving door of coaches, we want to rebuild.

Yes, I disagree with point 8 as well. Need to give Shurmur another year and the QB of HIS choosing.
Cutting Shepard makes no sense
Sonic Youth : 10/12/2018 5:17 pm : link
He's developing into a very solid player.
Shephard is
Bill in TN : 10/12/2018 6:08 pm : link
a complimentary WR - nothing more, nothing less. However, I would not cut him. I would try to trade him.
Sheppard is Steve Smith with lapses in concentration

+ OBJ/TO head case contagion.

You spelled Doug Marrone wrong.
"Let so and so walk"

is something you say about someone at end of contract.

Sterling Shepard has one more very cheap year left for 2019. Given the lack of WR depth on this team, no reason he shoudn't be on the roster.

And, who knows, he may hit it off with the new QB.

Hilarious. Jacksonville is the absolute epitome of a multi year rebuild. Where do people come up with this stuff?

We’ll Coach FuckHead has his head so far up Coughlin’s ass he has become oxygen deprived.
I was with you for 1-4
Matt M. : 10/13/2018 2:40 am : link
With 1a being cutting Eli for the cap savings. But, you can't be all in for building around Barkley and then trade/cut ties with Shepard and OBJ. That just swaps one one-dimensional offense for another. And there is no way I am taking a doscount to deal Harrison, OBJ, or Jenkins. I wouldn't deal any of them, but I certainly wouldn't take a discount.

It's funny you say that because I was very calm when I wrote this. I could be wrong on every point, but I felt pretty calm writing them down.
M.S. most of it is cogent and I agree

The reason you can’t dump Shurmur that fast is you just canned a head coach. The want more stability not less. Even Mac got into his second season ( his 11-5 helped a lot). Many coaches have rough first years ( see Parcells) ang he inherited a mess. I think it’s also coming to light the core that remains had list faith in Manning. That’s a major issue right there. Let’s see if Shurmur can hold this together. Changing coaches like buying a new loaf of bread never works.

Keeping my fingers crossed that he's the guy to lead this team back to respectability. His basic decency shines through all the time; I hope his players respond positively to him. So, far he's guided the Giants to an on-off game-to-game season:

Jax (team played fairly well)
Dallas (team laid an egg)
Houston (team played fairly well)
New Orleans (team laid an egg)
Carolina (team played fairly well)
Philly (team laid an egg)

LOL the Jags had nearly a decade of 5 or fewer wins, collecting top 10 picks along the way and hoarding cap space.

The Jags are the epitome of a multi-year rebuild.
Agree with Christian
beatrixkiddo : 10/13/2018 12:16 pm : link
Jags and Rams are examples of teams that sucked for a long time and had many years of high picks to rebuild. Now both are dominating their conferences. Giants should have started rebuilding by canning Reese years ago, I think we are still a ways off from being really good. Good news is our division other than the Eagles is pretty shitty, so if we somehow get lucky and land the next franchise QB, we can at least be back in the playoff hunt again. Still need pieces and depth everywhere though, they better hope they don’t have to move up to grab their guy at QB next year cause it will come at the cost of losing valuable picks to rebuild other positions that we are still week at. At this point the season is over I’m all in on the #suck for the duck. Rather embrace a tank season again than root for mediocrity for another 5+ years and constantly have our seasons over in October.
As for Eli
