One new observation about Eli

Matt M. : 10/13/2018 2:26 am
Immobile gets thrown around far too often or inaccuratley, in my opinion. He is depicted as a statue, which has never been the case. He always had a pretty good ability to feel the rush and avoid a number of sacks and even hits. IT is a big reason he started so many consecutive games. Even this year, they have been moving the pocket a decent amount and he seems to be moving well enough in doing so; he can move in the pocket and he can effectively roll. The X factor is that the D knows he is never going to take off and run. So, where another QB rolling right will freeze or draw a LB and/or DB, Eli does not. The coverage stays on their men or zones. There were at least 5 or 6 occasions Eli had rolled to the right, most by design, but 1 or 2 out of necessity, and there were just no open targets. Shepard especially was blanketed in those situations. On the flip side, Wentz rolled once and the D completely froze allowing a huge play downfield.

It's not that he can't move; it's that he is not going to run.
Mobility isn't the issue
SHO'NUFF : 10/13/2018 5:02 am : link
it's seeing the rush or anticipating where it's coming from... you can't tell with this OL... he's seeing phantom rushers.
He is slow

As molasses in reaction and a statue - stop - he is the least desirable starting QB in the nfl - bar none - imho not one team Would trade us one for one with their quarterbac for Eli -Just accept that it’s over - Eli is the star of “Weekend at Bernie’s”

100% agree with this. He's shell shocked. Almost like he has PTSD.
He can't run?
lecky : 10/13/2018 7:27 am : link
How about he can't throw, he takes too long to snap the ball, he seems to have no awareness of what is going on downfieldd and he fumbles way too often when he gets hit? To name a few. Do I need to name other QB's that never run and their success?
3 coaches can't fix him, it is time to move on. Let's make this year the rebuilding year. Put in Lauletta and hope you drafting him early was the right move.

What an A Hole.
What you describe about him shifting in the pocket to avoid rush
UberAlias : 10/13/2018 8:06 am : link
Is something he used to do but doesn’t do anymore. He used to have poise in the pocket and ability to shift around and avert pressure. He was fantastic about doing that in the 2011 run, but he doesn’t do that anymore. There is no pocket presence. It’s a huge problem and a big reason he doesn’t have it anymore.

when Eli steps on the field.

They know his OL is bad, they know he isn't a threat to run, they know the spot he will be at when he drops back, they know he is sloppy with the ball when pressured, they know he is looking at the rush, and they know he would rather throw it short these days.

they know...

Eli played poorly on Thursday but this criticism is unfair because the pocket is collapsing entirely on 50 percent of pass plays. There are few opportunities for him to move in the pocket.

Pocket elusiveness has always been solid

Decision making is completely different than 04-11 Manning.

He plays scared. And I don't blame him. Who wouldn't?
I am not talking about one game
UberAlias : 10/13/2018 9:09 am : link
This has been a problem. His former GM referred to Eli as skittish. Some, not all, but some of what is attributed to pocket collapse is pressure coming from an individual rusher working off a block which can be avoided by stepping up or shifting laterally or simply getting out of the way. All QBs face this and Eli used to be good in this area, but at this point is too slow to react, lacks the poise and becomes panicky, and lacks athleticism to perform even as an average NFL QB when faced with such limited pressure. Occasionally you see it with him, but not enough. He’s inadequate and the results are what they are.

It's new to the extent that now he is rolling more and they are intentionally moving him more. The effectiveness is not there because there is 0 threat of him running.

The protection was fairly good early in the game. The Eagles really started to pound him when they went up three scores and could just pin their ears back and rush. That’s an impossible task for most olines against a front 7 that talented.

Eli
AcidTest : 10/13/2018 10:44 am : link
was never a threat to run, but was nonetheless incredibly successful for years. That was because he was willing to take a hit to compensate, had tremendous pocket presence, and could extend plays while running laterally behind the LOS. But he's now older, and has taken too many beatings. And as others have said, he feels and hears phantom rushers even when there is no pressure.

final chapter.....please continue the end is near.
Eli's problem is the internal clock in his head is broken.
NyquistX3 : 10/13/2018 2:24 pm : link
The clock that tells him "the ball needs to get out now!" is set a tick or two ahead of where it should be due to years of abuse by a shitty offensive line and no running game, and he's either rushing his throws or not letting plays develop downfield. I don't see it being fixed this year. Hopefully he gets a fresh start somewhere else next year and pads his HOF resume or just retires with his health in order.

Perhaps you and all the Eli supporters can defend us not moving up 13 spots to draft mahomes ? We have a tight end who couldn’t block up piece of paper who’s on the injured list —/ who thought it good to grab his balls the first time he scored a touchdown. Does that make you proud?

Maybe you can teach me something about football but I don’t know yet.

the reason we are bad is not solely because of Eli.

It is because the offensive line is shitty and the defensive line cannot rush the passer.

Yes, Eli is on the downside of his career.
Yes, we should move on from him next year.

But, the reincarnation of John Elway doesn't make this shitfest a contending football team.
I’d add something to this; a noticeable decline in accuracy and
dpinzow : 10/13/2018 9:32 pm : link
velocity on intermediate and deep passes.

In Eli’s prime the primary criticism of him was that his short passes were thrown with too much velocity and were inaccurate, usually high or wide or the receiver. However, this was a benefit to him on intermediate and deep throws. Eli used to have a cannon for an arm; how many throws did he complete in the intermediate 15-25 yard range and the deep range (over 25 yards) on his back foot? I believe only Rodgers, out of all his contemporaries, threw better passes over 15 yards.

Eli still had his deep ball up to 2015, and largely played excellent until then. His long ball started to decline in 2016 even as we went 11-5. Now it’s difficult for him to get it there on anything down the field, even when protection holds up. I believe the poor protection not only messed up the clock in Eli’s head, but caused him to physically decline a couple of years before he should have
Disagree here
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/13/2018 9:35 pm : link
"I believe only Rodgers, out of all his contemporaries, threw better passes over 15 yards."

I think that's a bit of an oversell. It was a strength. He wasn't better at it than players like Drew Brees or Peyton or Brady.
