Should Beckham Continue to be a Punt Returner?

gidiefor : Mod : 10/13/2018 12:27 pm
I've been cringing every time OBJ receives a punt, especially the dicey ones. If he gets injured because of this -- I know that I for one will be disgusted to lose one of the premier receivers in the NFL.
Is this a good usage of his talents? Curious to know what the rest of you think about this?
at this point,

Good post.

He is obviously giving it his all, but it has not looked good.
Very dangerous position

his head is absolutely in the game. Implying he'd get hurt for lack of awareness is ridiculous

It's not worth the risk in a lost season.

Has nothing to do with injuries, he hasnt shown he can even catch a punt. And if you think his head is in the game because he bangs it against an air conditioning unit then maybe you should rethink that. His head is into OBJ, tough to watch him on the sidelines.
No.

He's been mediocre to catastrophic. I'd rather see someone who is consistently solid rather than mainly unrealized potential.

He's a great talent, but GREAT PLAYERS are consistent. One or two flashy plays a game don't make up for the f*** ups.

Let Davis run it, he flashed some speed. Let OBJ focus on offense, he seems to have lost a step this year

every time OBJ gets set back there to return a punt...key up the music for some funny highlights.
Why not?
Diver_Down : 10/13/2018 1:54 pm : link
He is getting paid. You hear from others that they are willing to do whatever for the team to get a win so why should he be held back? Get the ball in our playmaker's hands. You can't coach/play scared. You can't hold back players for a tomorrow. We need to win a game.

Also, our defense isn't exactly forcing teams to do a lot of punting so he is being "protected" by our defense being so terrible.
No. For one thing, he's not that good at it. And then there's the

Sehorn factor.
I think it's a bad idea at this point.
j_rud : 10/13/2018 2:05 pm : link
I think the limited opportunities he's had to make big plays increases the likelihood of making poor decisions. At that spot poor decisions can lead to game changing plays for the opposition, and this teams margin of error is small to begin with.
People need to get over the Sehorn Factor.

There shouldn't be sacred cows on a losing team. Barkley should be back on kickoffs.
Yes

but not after the team is eliminated from the playoffs
95% of NFL teams can find a UDFA to return punts

the Giants use the guy they just gave 65 million dollars to who is terrible at it. The Giants are a complete mess in every way.

I don't Agree with this. Barkley can be one helluva piece for this offense for years to come. In a crap season like this I don't think extra risk is a good choice. If this team had a chance to compete I would understand using key players in spots like that.

He is a terrible punt returner
Vanzetti : 10/13/2018 5:01 pm : link
Catches the ball off his chest. Has no clue when to fair catch. Poor decision making.

Just because you are good at one thing, doesn’t mean you are good at another

Really poor decision by Shurmur. Smacks of desperation

Plus, Giants just gave Odell 65 million in guaranteed money. Why would they put hm at a high risk position like punt returner, especially when he sucks
Yes.

Get the ball into the playmakers hands at every opportunity.
Yes.
baadbill : 10/13/2018 5:18 pm : link
Because he isn't any longer the receiver he was before his injury. Might as well have him doing something to contribute since it seems likely his greatest plays are behind him. When his "greatest highlights reel" is made, it won't have any catches after the 2017 season.
I think it's a good idea in the right

situations. When the other team is punting from deep in there own end and he has some room to work with fine. He seems to enjoy getting the chance to make a play and gets him more involved in the game.

When it's a shorter field and he's trying to take one out from the 5 just to try and break one it's probably a riskier decision both field position and injury wise.

I was sitting right behind the endzone when he screwed up the punt in Carolina. He miss read it off the punters foot right from the beginning which made me question his return instincts. He's immensely talented, but maybe lacking some situational awareness at a position he is not used to playing. (Unless he was trying to fake out the Carolina players into thinking it was going the other direction. But then why run back to the ball once it lands?)

I'd also say once we're mathematically eliminated there is no reason to chance him back there.
No.
FStubbs : 10/13/2018 8:12 pm : link
It's clear he's a turnover waiting to happen running back punts.

We need an actual punt returner.

impact, more so as a drama queen. Let him return punts. His durability is always going to be question anyway. We need cheap points these days to stay in games, razzle dazzle, pick-six and other fortune cookie surprises.
