Leaning toward the Chargers and Browns. I am not on the bandwagon... but I kind of enjoy the enthusiasm of Browns fans after all the years of futility. Plus I think it will be a competitive game.
A pick 6 and two near ints. He just keeps throwing it. No sense of panic. I feel Giants panic and get discouraged. Colts know their identity. Now Luck rewarded with TD
I’d imagine it’s Dave in Hoboken and Mook getting a first hand look at their idol, Sam Darnold.
Yeah. Clearly, the decision roll with Eli turned out oh so well when some of us saw it as a terrible decision 10 miles out.
The difference is Darnold is 21 years old and playing his 7th game of his career. Shall we pull up the game logs of Eli's 2004, when he was a full 2 years older than Darnold?
We can always do that.
I think there might be a team worst than the Giants Â
But the way it looks early on, is that Mayfield is the only one who has that "special" ability. It's still a lot of unfilled potential - but Mayfield is the only guy I've seen so far of the bunch that seems to be a guy I'd regret passing on and he's the one guy we didn't pass on because, well... we couldn't.
Darnold is literally playing game manager, safe ball.
The difference between the Giants and Jets is that the Jets have been trying to build things from the inside out while we've been doing the opposite.
So, they can actually play this type of safe football and be in most of their games. It doesn't work for us.
In any event - it's early, but I don't feel like we missed anything with Darnold, Rosen, or Allen so far. None of them are showing the type of special flashes we've seen recently from guys like Watson, Mahomes, and Mayfield.
he didn't have some magical QB dust and wasn't going to be special from day 1. Not many QBs are. Eli sure as shit wasn't.
Meanwhile - he's got a flawed team around him too, and Todd Bowles as his coach. All things considered, given that he's started from day 1, I think Darnold has looked fine.
Darnold has looked "fine" - my point is that we will have opportunities to draft QB's who are on that level. He's not a generational talent or anything close.
Saquon Barkley looks like one.
There will be no Saquon Barkley in next year's draft.
Look, I know we need a QB - I've been harder on Eli than ever. It's over for him. We need to draft someone.
But I would rather suck again and wind up with Barkley + Herbert than have Darnold and ? in the next draft.
Also, I realize Eli looked like shit in 2004 - but first off, 2004 was 14 years ago and the league has changed a LOT since then. Second, Eli is Eli. He has always been a massive enigma. His entire career has consisted of valleys where he looked like one of the worst players in the game and peaks where he was completely unphased in the biggest, toughest spots imaginable and did some of the truly unthinkable (in a good way)
Things are different now.
I don't know - without trying to derail the thread Â
I think you guys are shortchanging here by not considering the learning curve associated with RB vs QB. I don't think most 'special' QBs displayed much of that ability in the first few games that they played in the league, especially when they're thrown in there from day 1.
Obviously, that debate is for a later time, we won't know who got the better end of the deal until a few years from now.
I haven't followed them too closely, but I know that Reich inherited all of McDaniels hires before he took the job. Any word on whether or not he retains them?

Arc, as usual, you're spot on. I'm in complete agreement.
I feel terrible for Andrew Luck. Even now, after the injury - he is still one of the best QB's in the game. He has NOTHING.
His WR's today are Chester Rogers, Ryan Grant...
He's missing his starting TE (Doyle) - though Ebron has been excellent.
His RB's are Hines, Mack, Turbin and Wilkins. Most of them are JAG's. Mack bungled an easy screen that turned into a pick 6, Hines dropped an easy TD, Turbin fumbled on a short yardage carry that gave the Jets an easy score.
And his line still isn't very good. Nor is his defense.
He is in an impossible situation.

Yep. And it's not like most of the rookie QB's are surrounded by much, either. They are on trash teams, for the most part.
I think with a lot of upper-echelon QB's, you can see the talent shine through the mistakes early on.
Darnold has done a lot of good things - don't get me wrong. He doesn't suck. He looks pretty good.
My point is simply that I don't think we're ever going to look back at Sam Darnold and think "man... we could have had THAT guy..."
I think Darnold is going to be very solid. Very good, even.
But I can't be mad at the Giants for taking the best player in the draft. Barkley IS special.
And hey, sometimes it takes time. Jared Goff looked crappy in his first year. Way better last year, and now he looks like one of the better QB's in football.
But guys like Russell Wilson looked really good pretty much right away. You could tell Russ had "it" from the start.
Same with Mahomes. I realize he sat last year and isn't a rookie - but this is his first year as a starter and he has personally accounted for more TD's than more than half the teams in the NFL.
Passing on Sam Darnold isn't going to cripple this franchise, but it also doesn't change the fact that we need to find our next QB.
The "Eli can play another 3-4 years" stuff has to be thrown in the garbage. It's not happening.
Starting for bad team with no skills players coming off back to back 5 win seasons. He’s going to be good. Has 2 TDS again today. Going to keep getting g better.

Yeah. He also had 3 TDs last week against Denver. A week on here where mysteriously, no one had a thing to say about him.

The Jets are hardly the Bills. They're not loaded with talent on offense but their line has played quite well, Anderson is a good deep threat and Enunwa has played well when he's been on the field. The biggest factor though has been their run game. They average nearly 5 ypc, 5th in the league. That makes life easier for a rookie qb. You watch a guy like Rosen or Allen and whether or not you think they'll be good players, they don't stand a chance.

It's about the trenches. Darnold has protection. The skill players are secondary. Their team is constructed much better than ours. They're building it from the inside-out. We haven't been.

They are also a great example of how nothing in the NFL is a given.
Surely they were destined for glory when miraculously Peyton’s injury lined up with Luck’s draft eligibility. Sure it was abrupt moving on from Peyton but they were destined for more winning right?
Well?
It is a testament to Luck’s ability before the injury that they appeared in an AFC title game. But even then there were cracks, and since then those cracks have become holes. It should also be noted that Luck was considered much more of a sure thing than any of the 2018 QBs.
7 years later the Colts seem further from winning than the day they drafted Luck. Things always what they seem in the NFL. People should slow down when they say the Giants fucked up the future.
I might be nervous if Barkley didn’t look like Barkley. But he looks like a perennial all-pro.
Things are usually never as good or as bad as they seem.
That’s the comparison we should focus on. He would have been an upgrade on what we have, he’s 21 and getting paid peanuts for the next few years. Unfortunately we have a guy running the team who thinks it’s 1975.
It's about the trenches. Darnold has protection. The skill players are secondary. Their team is constructed much better than ours. They're building it from the inside-out. We haven't been.
It’s about the trenches only because that’s the only area you have the slightest case. Age, time in offense, offensive fire power, coaching, play calling, etc not even close. Jets OLine isn’t Dallas.

Nope - it's about the trenches because you still need to win battles there. It's football 101.

They have two RB's in the top 20 league-wide in rushing yards/game. Crowell is 5th behind Gurley, Elliott, Mixon and McCaffrey. Their OL has played very well this year.
I said the comparison is not good. Darnold is going to be good. How good remains to be seen but judging based on how he does as youngest QB ever on a bad team with poor talent around him and poor coaching is a stretch to make your point.
I don't think you guys understand what my argument is.
It's not that Sam Darnold sucks. It's that we have a better chance of drafting a comparable QB than we do a player on the level of Saquon Barkley.
Darnold looks good. I didn't say he didn't. I don't think he'll be special, though - and I don't feel like we missed out on something we can't get in a future draft.
We didn't botch our pick. There are still going to be opportunities to draft a QB.

. But somehow Jets only won 5 games a year past two seasons with that dominant front. They are not a good football team no matter how you spin it.

Fair enough. It remains to be seen. We need to see how good Darnold becomes and what answer NYG finds at QB.

I can't argue with you if you're going to make shit up.
Where did I call them "dominant" ?
I didn't.
What they have up front is better than what we have. Literally inarguable. I never called them dominant.
As if it is so good lack of any recognizable talent elsewhere doesn’t matter. But the bottom line is they are a bad team. Look no further than back to back 5 wins. They don’t have near talent KC does or Seattle did.

I think I mentioned it once or twice. And why does it matter what they did 2 years ago or even last year? It's the NFL. Records fluctuate wildly from year to year. Look at Carolina's last 5-6 seasons for a perfect example of it.
To complete passes to wrs who are WIDE OPEN every play. Would be nie if giants wr ever got that wide open
It's hard for there to be busted coverage when the OL can't keep the DL at bay for two seconds. It would help though if the quarterback could buy an extra second or two by moving around
If your point is the Jets are a good football team despite results of recent seasons, I don’t know what to tell you. They are not.
Another point I never tried to make and never suggested.
I don't think the Jets are good at all. I think they have a decent front, I think they can run the football, and I think Sam Darnold is in a reasonably good position where they can play high percentage with him and keep most of what he's doing safe.
The Colts defense is really bad. Only 4-5 teams have allowed more points than they have.
So, what my original point was and always has been is simple -
I think Sam Darnold looks good. He might wind up being very good. But I don't feel like we missed out on a type of QB that we won't be able to get a hold of in a future draft whether it be next April or the following one.
On the flip side, I don't think an RB prospect like Barkley is going to pop up again any time soon.
So, do I think we need a QB? Safe to say I do... I've been crushing Eli almost all year.
Do I think the Giants set themselves back in a major way by not taking Darnold?
Nope. I think we'd still be pretty bad right now.
We have huge problems all the way down to the toxic, losing culture here.
I was gonna post the same thing. He drives them down the field and then shits the bed on those last three passes. He didn't even give his guys a chance with how bad those passes were.
how the bengals are supposed to cover Brown when the steelers blocked the defender immediately at the snap. How that isnt offensive PI i will never know
never understood how he set the Giants record for accuracy and many fans had no faith in him. I'm glad he went on to have the career he has
I did too - and he's gone on to have a great career. But Rosas really looks fantastic so far this year.
And it's sad to say... but he might be the only other bright spot outside of Barkley. There are a few other small ones.. but Rosas looks like he might finally be the guy we keep for the next decade.
to close out against Browns. Didn't that have implications for potential Comp Picks?
Yes, the more Geno plays the better.

Darnold was terrific. But that was a disgusting pathetic performance by the center who had Darnold jumping 3 feet into the air just to get the damn snap. And he loses Enunwa and idiot Robby Anderson drops the most perfect thread the needle throw which he got both hands on. At least Pryor caught that unbelievable tight window TD pass.
The defense played brain damaged in the 2nd half.
Darnold dragged this carcass to victory. They absolutely need to get him better than this middling meh talent
The way I see it is this —I believe the Jets have their guy. You never know for sure this early, but the eyeball he passes in my eyes. He’s young and talented and going to get better. Where he will reach, remains to be seen.
NYG and Jets have effectively swapped. Jets have their guy and can now focus on building around him.
NYG are not headed to QB hell, they are squarely in it.

We have the guy but we don't have the coach. Our coach is a moron
;)
And that's why. Terrible deep ball by Darnold
I still haven't seen anything that makes me think we missed out on a special player there.
I still haven't seen anything that makes me think we missed out on a special player there.
Same
As it turns out, we may have ultimately missed out on the best QB when all is said and done when the Browns took Mayfield.
I also have no idea how any NYG fan can even think about regretting Saquon Barkley on this team.
Remember Gurley then Goff.
I’d imagine it’s Dave in Hoboken and Mook getting a first hand look at their idol, Sam Darnold.

Who knew that trading the best defensive player in the NFL would be a bad thing?
Barkley is worth a shitty season. Look and see what the qb crop looks like next year, if no one is worth it we have big needs at OL as well

No, I am comparing QB to QB. One has special ability. It has nothing to do with anything else. It's about skillset.
If you'd take Darnold over Mahomes, then I'll throw the pretentious "LOL" right back over to you.

It's football 101.
. But somehow Jets only won 5 games a year past two seasons with that dominant front. They are not a good football team no matter how you spin it.
I can't argue with you if you're going to make shit up.
Where did I call them "dominant" ?
I didn't.
What they have up front is better than what we have. Literally inarguable. I never called them dominant.
I think I mentioned it once or twice. And why does it matter what they did 2 years ago or even last year? It's the NFL. Records fluctuate wildly from year to year. Look at Carolina's last 5-6 seasons for a perfect example of it.
It's hard for there to be busted coverage when the OL can't keep the DL at bay for two seconds. It would help though if the quarterback could buy an extra second or two by moving around
Barkley's prime is right now.
Gonna run the wildcat?

Won't need a super qb because of how good Barkley is? Shit Barkley is more than likely going to get better
Gonna run the wildcat?
Yes! That is 100% without a doubt what I was attempting to communicate!

That's rediculous. Are you actually saying his play will decline after this year?

At this point it might be the best option...

Ok, that's funny
Surprised it took this long into the season.
I was gonna post the same thing. He drives them down the field and then shits the bed on those last three passes. He didn't even give his guys a chance with how bad those passes were.
#11 didn’t even attempt to not to block downfield. Would have pushed them out of field goal range too.
Really disappointed with Carolina. They were deep in Redskins territory at the end, and turned it over on downs.

Looks like he may have pulled a hammy on the kick.
Helluva call to go for the 57 yarder up two points.
Obvious uncalled pick/blocking early on wr screen to Brown for td

Yeah. Might have ended up getting the FG for the win anyway.
Falcons hold on but injury-ravaged defense looked pretty awful.
Good chance for an Eli redemption game on MNF next. Engram should be back and Eli likes domes.
I did too - and he's gone on to have a great career. But Rosas really looks fantastic so far this year.
And it's sad to say... but he might be the only other bright spot outside of Barkley. There are a few other small ones.. but Rosas looks like he might finally be the guy we keep for the next decade.
That Barkley is just a running back, not worth drafting...
No doubt...why was that not a QB sneak. 1/2 yard with 6'8 255 lb QB and you go to shot gun formation????
Dopes.
Shades of Ernest Byner.
I thought so, but by the time it was controlled, it was touching the goal line. I will not fault the refs there.
Yes, the more Geno plays the better.
we want Geno - ( New Window )

Jets take the league
Slow down, there.
Haha, lead!
The defense played brain damaged in the 2nd half.
Darnold dragged this carcass to victory. They absolutely need to get him better than this middling meh talent
NYG and Jets have effectively swapped. Jets have their guy and can now focus on building around him.
NYG are not headed to QB hell, they are squarely in it.

We have the guy but we don't have the coach. Our coach is a moron
