Patriots Oline

Giantimistic : 10/14/2018 9:03 pm
Although I have faith that Gettleman will eventually put together a great oline, watching the Patriots oline is impressive and has not missed a beat losing Solder.

Looking at the Patriots website, their LG was a third round pick. Center was a 2015 rookie free agent. RG was a 4th round 2015 pick. Right Tackle was a 5th round 2011 draft pick. Their new left tackle that replaced Solder was originally a 5th round pick of SanFran and the Patriots traded a 3rd rounder for him this year. Trent Brown is 6-8, 380 and from what I have seen so far in this game, he has been absolutely dominant.

Is this just good player evaluation, coaching, the system? A large part of Tom Brady's success has been the online giving him tons of time to throw. The Patriots highest oline draft pick isn't even on the team anymo6 as he is ofcourse a Giant. The rest are all 3rd round picks or later.

The biggest frustration I have had with the Giants over the past 6 years has been the Giants oline. We have even drafted some high picks. Belicheck has not the best drafter but I think his ability to assemble an oline is one of the most underrated aspects of their success. We know what Brady looks like when you pressure him--2 Giants Superbowls. Regardless, who is the QB going forward this has to be fixed.

Trent Brown is outplaying Solder...

And Brown is getting 2M this year, while Solder is getting 22M....BB does it again!

is the best in the business as an OL coach (from what i have read).

Probably has a lot to do with it.

scouting, scheme, etc. also play a part, I'm sure.

Trent Brown looks vastly superior to Nate Solder.

DG fell for the Bill Belichick okie doke.

I think the system and more importantly the QB has a lot to do with it. Brady can still move in the pocket but their system keeps you off balance.
Solder wasn't good in New England

just a bad signing for the money from the time it was made.

I don’t know the guys name but Francesa has often spoke very highly of the OL Coach pretty much saying he’s the best in the business and that if he wanted, he would have been a head coach but he’s not interested.

It also helps that Brady gets rid of the ball very quickly and that he moves well in the pocket.

I wonder if part of the Giants thoughts about him were based on their draft evaluation. I remember that in his draft the Giants I think were connected to him. I agree that he wasn't anything special in New England, but he was solid.
Trent Brown was a 7th round pick by the Niners
shyster : 10/14/2018 9:24 pm : link
in 2015 not 5th round.

He was pick 244. Bobby Hart was pick 226.

Von Miller has said more than once that Brown was his toughest opponent. But Niners wanted to go with McGlinchey and Staley.

Brown will get very expensive after this season.

I'm definitely not an OL expert, but it seems sometimes that OL's in general play "up" to their linemates. Sometimes it seems cohesion, familiarity, and trust, outweigh individual talents. Plus, scheme and QB absolutely help in the way that a good pass rush covers up for a poor secondary I think scheme, QB and even skill players can cover up some OL deficiencies.

So comparing Cassell to Solder probably isn't that far off.

The system New England runs makes everyone on the OL probably look a little better.

But even in New England in my opinion the best thing you could say about Solder is he was steady, but unspectacular. the couple years of Scarnecchia's retirement that OL was not nearly as effective.

When Solder got that contract I got it, the Giants were desperate, but he was not IMO worth that much money.

Brady also helps, he may not be able to rjn but he moves extremely well in the pocket, he has side stepped rushes multiple times...

a good qb can help his offensive line..

Of everyone else in the league. They have been for awhile now. It’s a combination of great coaching staff, scouts, and owner.. They seem to be complete in all facets. You have to admire them even if you hate them. I bet they can get Erik Flowers and transform him into a pro bowler. Their regime is top notch.

Yeah, great news, so the Giants can massively overpay another OL the Patriots let walk.
Dante Scarnecchia...

is arguably the greatest position coach in NFL history. Guy is a savant.

He retired in 2013 but Belichick talked him into coming back in 2016. Has a great eye for talent and an even better ability to teach.

Wait, didn’t you say this was Brady’s steep decline year and by extension, the Pats’ as well?

No it gives teams another option in free agency to add to Ja'Wuan James, Donovan Smith, etc. Brown is young and he was good in SF also. The issue with him was weight management.

I would trade a 2nd round pick for Scarnecchia if he promised to coach for at least 3 seasons.

My point is he'll get a massive contract in free agency and the Patriots won't pay it. They'll coach someone else up who will also do a great job (as long as Scar is there).

The Giants will pay someone, who may or may not pan out.
It’s Brady’s release.

He throws the short quick stuff to bring the safeties up, then hits em deep. Brady makes an OL better.

You're right. He will walk via free agency they will insert 2018 1st round pick Isaiah Wynn into the starting lineup at LT and they won't skip a beat.

Definitely the QB and system play a huge role. I'd venture to bet that the Patriots' o-linemen as a unit on any other team with any other offensive coordinator and any other QB, would not be nearly as good as they look now.
