BBI Old Game Review- 1993 Giants @ Redskins

Matt in SGS : 10/16/2018 9:08 am
Ok, 2 straight 1-5 starts and it's time to try to remember when we actually enjoyed watching the Giants. Normally I do this in the offseason, but let's be honest, the offseason might already be here.

So it's time for an often requested game, the 1993 Giants beat down of the Redskins in RFK. This was the Giants firing on all cylinders, with Reeves running trick plays, Mike Sherrard showing what he could do before he was lost for the year one week later vs. the Eagles. And the defense dominating the Redskins 41-7.

I'll have another game ready to go during the bye week and should be able to get some more done in the coming weeks as well.

As always, throw more requests my way and I'll be happy to do it as a fun distraction from this mess of a season.

Enjoy!

Also, not sure I've seen you post (maybe you have and I missed it) your general thoughts on the general state of the franchise, this past offseason, the first 6 weeks. You've always struck me as an even keeled, reasonable poster. I's be curious to see what you think.

Wins we’ve had over the years, a good number of which came during the garbage time of the season
YES!!

One of my alltime favorite games. I had something high school activity that day, don't remember what, so my dad taped it for me and I must have watched the tape about 500 times. The Giants absolutely smoked those losers on their field. Great job by Tillman filling in for the injured Hampton.

I had higher hopes for this season. I thought we would have a season like 1993 to be honest. Eli's last hurrah similar to Simms in 1993, Giants being competitive and in the hunt for a playoff spot. I thought top end they could be 9-7 and looking at a Wild Card.

But I'm also a believer after watching the Giants year after year, that the Giants have a strange history that when they play Dallas early in the season, it's usually a harbinger for what they end up being as the year goes along. I can think of 1987 when they lost to the Cowboys to fall to 0-2 before the strike and the season unraveled. I can think to the 2003 infamous Matt Bryant kickoff out of bounds near the end of the game which would lead to a loss and we saw the Giants fall apart later in the year, losing 8 straight and costing Fassel is job. The 2015 late loss which signaled how many games the Giants would blow that year. The 2017 loss in the opener when the offense looked anemic and made us all realize that the Giants hadn't fixed anything on offense. And even now in 2018.

There were some good signals too. The 2007 loss the Giants were right with Dallas and showed they could play with them. The 2016 win late also showed how the Giants were going to win close games.

But anyway, the bottom line of what I see with this Giants team was I was hopeful for the best, but what we are seeing is the worst. We should have known when the Giants made 6-7 waiver claims before the season, on top of all the roster turn over that this was a big job to fix. The damage done by years of bad drafting cannot be fixed in 1 draft. The Giants will need at least 1 more strong draft to get the right core in place. I know Eli is a lightning rod, but at this stage, with so much wrong around the team, and at Eli's age and natural decline, he is taking the brunt of the blame. What is missing from this team is a mental and physical toughness. The moment something goes wrong for these guys, the wheels come off. The Giants need to fix their lines. For all the talk of the offensive line and changes from last year, the only guy on the line who still I think is worth keeping around is Hernandez. Solder has been disappointing, and so has Omameh. The best thing you can say about the line was that they don't have Flowers and Jerry there. And the frustration of years of losing is taking it's toll on their young stars (Odell, Collins, Shepard, etc).

But I'm hopeful that in this draft the Giants are in the right direction. Barkley, Hernandez, Hill, and Carter all look like keepers. And I want to see Lauletta start the last 6 games assuming the Giants are out of the playoff picture and fix the mistake of Webb last year. Shurmur was brought here because he could take QBs into his system who didn't have to be top picks (Case Keenum) and get good production out of them. If it turns out Lauletta has something to work with, that opens up the Giants to not force a QB pick next year.
I pretty much agree with everything above

especially 2 points.

1) I also thought this was an 8-10 win team in the mix for a WC.

2) They must get Lauletta in there ASAP. My personal hope is after the BYE week but I'm not convinced it will happen that soon or at all. No one is going to mistake KL for Andrew Luck, but can he do some of the things Case Keenum did last year with Shurmur? I think 8 games would go a long way in finding that out.
Excellent choice!

I remember that game, that was my first year of really following the Giants.
My dad and brother went to that game and had a great time!
I was at that game too

One of the best games I've been to while here in metro DC. Blowing a team out while on the road is about the best it can get for a fan. And in this case it was the Redskins in their first post-Gibbs season, I believe. Plus a chance to say good-bye to Simms and LT (although obviously at the time we didn't know that).

was a great season with my childhood heroes (I was at the end of HS in 93') having one last shot and ultimately falling short... We had a legit shot that year - the loss in Arizona, in the rain late in the season (the Ron Moore game!) and the loss to Dallas were gutwrenching. We shoulda beat the niners and should've won the season finale against the Cowboys. If we had HFADV I'm still convinced we would've been playing in our (at the time) third Super Bowl in 7 years and would've probably beat the Bills.

This game also reminds me of how dominant an O-Line can be, man I miss those days!
