Nick Bosa withdraws from Ohio State - will enter NFL draft

Giantsfan79 : 10/16/2018 11:55 am
So Nick Bosa injured himself on Sept 15, and had surgery. It was very likely he could have returned to Ohio State for the stretch run and postseason.

Except that he decided to quit the team and focus on getting ready for the NFL draft. Does has actions change your opinion of him?

Nope
Anakim : 10/16/2018 11:56 am : link
He's still going to go top-3.
I don't follow CFB much
jcn56 : 10/16/2018 11:56 am : link
but I don't blame these guys for making moves like these. One wrong twist and he could go from sure fire first rounder to an afterthought, costing himself millions.

If it were me, I wouldn't take the risk either.

While it tweaks me a little bit because he is letting down his teammates by not playing the rest of the season, I can understand this from a business standpoint.
Nope, he’s doing the smart thing
UConn4523 : 10/16/2018 12:00 pm : link
and I’d do the same.
Not surprised at all...

...pro football begins at the High School Parochial level; continues on at the collegiate level; and then gets its official stamp of approval in the NFL.
I'm an OSU guy
crackerjack465 : 10/16/2018 12:02 pm : link
but as long as health checks out, he's still top 3. If he comes back, doesn't play well right after surgery or gets hurt again, he could cost himself a lot of money. I totally get the decision.
Not at all

Don't blame him. Why risk another injury.

Maybe he is injury prone like his brother and doesn't want to chance another one?
No
AcesUp : 10/16/2018 12:07 pm : link
Because he is a professional athlete and is doing what is best for his career. Just like 99% of the people on this board would do for their careers.
I might feel differently if he quit mid-season and was healthy...
Milton : 10/16/2018 12:15 pm : link
But he's still rehabbing an injury and wasn't expected back until December anyway.
let me play a little devils advoacate

How can any team really trust Nick Bosa after this?

Sake of the argument let's say he came out last year and the Giants drafted him. What stops Bosa from looking up and saying this is a one win team, why should I keep playing hard when it doesn't matter and my salary is guaranteed?

Second scenario - Bosa's team is down 10 with 5 minutes left to play, great time for a strip sack fumble recovery for a touchdown. Does Bosa play all out to try to make that happen or sit back?

Everyone assumes he'll turn it back on once he gets on a pro team but how guaranteed is that?
Bit of trivia.

The Bosas' are great-grandsons of former Chicago mob boss Tony Accardo.

Teams don't think like that anymore, Christian McCaffrey shot up draft boards and went higher than early projections after sitting out his bowl game. It's not a concern to me when I assume that most players have this mentality to some degree. Why wouldn't they with what is at stake?

I think there is a difference between a player sitting out a Bowl Game because they are hurt or don't want to rush back vs. a player who got hurt early in the year, who was likely to come back but instead decides to walk away from his team midseason to focus on himself. In the playoff era of college football Bosa could have made a big impact, and we'll see if his absence hurts OSU in January.
He would need to remain academically eligible... no?
Marianne at PSU : 10/16/2018 1:14 pm : link
Maybe he would have had trouble doing so.

Perhaps that's why he's withdrawn.
I think though when you draft him
Jim in Forest Hills : 10/16/2018 1:20 pm : link
be ready for holdouts and such. He's showing the business side in college, fine, but when you draft him, know its all about that, not necessarily winning.
Smart move...
bw in dc : 10/16/2018 1:21 pm : link
I'm sure he'll miss some of the money he's making on the OSU payroll, but I think he'll be fine... ;)

Seriously, more players of his level, in their final, should seriously consider this whether they are hurt or not. The downside is just too severe. Just ask Jaylon Smith. Fortunately, Dallas still drafted him in the second round, but I think he was the best player in the 2016 draft. I would have taken him in the top five, easily. He lost a ton of money from the rookie contract he would have received if not for playing in that worthless bowl game...

I am not fond of the Ohio State program. Meyer is a great recruiter and coach and has re-made them into a powerhouse. But like Calipari at Kentucky, I always feel there is something a little too slick about how they do business...

I'm a little bit surprised
Kyle in NY : 10/16/2018 1:39 pm : link
but I can't blame him. It's his life, his career. Any desire to see him return was based in selfish intentions. Was his first year as a full time starter here. He was dominating unlike any player I'd seen in a long time.

Skipping the bowl game has gone on for a while, but this is now the first time a player is withdrawing in the middle of a season when he almost certainly could have returned down the line. Interesting to see what kind of precedent this sets

Gary? He hasn't been that noticeable in the Michigan games that I've seen. Bosa is more of an impact player.

He commands a lot of intention and is a BEAST in the run game. I would say Gary is more dominant in the run game than Bosa is. As far as pass rushing, he hasnt stood out. A lot of that is because their defense is SO dominant that Winovich or Bush get there first. Teams are using a ton of screens to negate pass rush.

Maybe. Goldilocks is having an amazing year. He's really flying around the football.
Yes it changes my opinion of him
arniefez : 10/16/2018 1:55 pm : link
for the better. Why play for the small amount OSU is paying him when if he's drafted top 3 he gets 30 million guaranteed. Very smart.
Go for the big bucks.

He had a serious injury and may be able to come back. If any team in the top thinks that him being smart about not re-injuring himself and pass on him there will be a line of teams willing to forgive him. Kid is a sure fire top 5. Risking that is stupid. You’re thinking lolenits 1970. Those
days are gone. M

Why risk millions? Nobody is going to blame him other than OSU fans who if it was then or their kid would most likely do the same thing.
Tough choice
