The case for Lauletta

MagicManning : 10/16/2018 8:38 pm
I'll start by saying that I wouldn't make any change before the bye week and we should be almost out of contention. Whether Eli is the problem or is still good enough in the right situation is irrelevant. We have a 37 yo QB and right now a premium pick that can be used to address that.

Reason 1 would be that we dropped the ball last year. No, not by picking Barkley but by not letting Davis Webb see what he can bring to an NFL field.

Reason 2 is imo Lauletta is a qb who is better suited to play behind a leaky oline. He moves very well in the pocket and has athleticsm to escape the pocket and bail the oline out.

Reason 3 is playing with house money. Much like the Browns did with Baker by having him sit. No pressure when he comes in to play. Just come in and show what you got.

It's the end of an era and probably a career and it's not easy for many to watch. This is what happens in sports but we can't just appease people because of what they have done in the past. It's ti
me to do the groundwork for our next starting qb whoever that may be.
The case for him...

We're 1-5. We're going nowhere. Eli, bless his soul, is washed. Let's see what the kid has got.
Lauletta

Will get his chance this season. Who knows when
It would be dumb to play him too soon.

somewhere around three to four games left. If things stay as they are.
We might be better with Lauletta

.
I agree
MagicManning : 10/16/2018 8:50 pm : link
They don't need to rush him out there but they need to give themselves to evaluate what they have. It also gives them time to evaluate what type of QB they really want if Lauletta isn't the answer. Even if we lose we win more by finding out what we have imo
I don't think it is about necessarily evaluating Lauletta
robbieballs2003 : 10/16/2018 8:53 pm : link
as much as it just about getting him experience. If Lauletta goes out and plays well it isn't going to stop the Giants from taking a QB if they feel they are getting a franchise guy next year. If he plays poorly then what does that mean other than he didn't have a great situation to come into. Forget evaluating a rookie who played at D1 AA and needs time and focus on just getting him valuable live reps so he can compete next year for a starting job.
I am curious to see how Eli acts
xman : 10/16/2018 8:53 pm : link
when the benching comes. It will likely be uncomfortable and sad unless Eli voices his agreement with the move.
Don’t play the kid before he is ready
Oscar : 10/16/2018 8:56 pm : link
Frankly I’d rather see Eli take his lumps out there in a losing effort. Give Lauletta a shot when there’s a reasonable expectation it’ll go ok. Granted I have no insight to how he’s doing in practice, but coming from Richmond I assume he’s not going to be set to go until late in the season.
Too early
joeinpa : 10/16/2018 9:07 pm : link
Shurmur would lose his team if he put in an inexperienced rookie 6 games in.

It s his job to try to win every game. Eli gives him best chance at thi point
I'm souped and I'm amped
Coach Red Beaulieu : 10/16/2018 9:16 pm : link
Bill Walsh said he can find any bum to replace Joe Montana to run his WCO. 4th rounder Lauletta is what he had in mind.
If he succeeds
Les in TO : 10/16/2018 9:34 pm : link
Then we can either move forward with him or trade him for picks and select another QB in the draft
How about
Doomster : 10/16/2018 9:42 pm : link
we make him the #2 QB first?

Every one that gets upset because other fans want to see Lauletta play over Eli need to chill out. We are not crucifying Eli for the fall of this team, just pointing out the fact that he is 37 years old and doesn't appear to be able to play QB in the NFL much longer. In a lost season you might as well see what happens when you bring in another QB. Not like Geno Smith as he is not very good and basically the same as Eli except younger and not as good. But maybe just maybe if we play a QB that has better than average mobility and good accuracy we can see what the problem is. If the same problems occur with Lauletta for a few games in a row then we know what problems to address. I don't subscribe to the camp that says you will ruin a QB in a few games due to pressures, it happens over a long time.

Im not saying start Lauletta right away but if we keep trending how we are they need to get the ball moving. Us fans need to back out of the way and see what happens. My issue with the benching last year was that it was in favor of Geno.

The definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That is exactly what the Giants are doing right now.
There is no case

Such a stupid thread
After the break let him play.
joe48 : 10/17/2018 4:57 am : link
If they don’t that could be a sign that he is not good enough. Shumur would then have to stay with Eli. We will be in the easier part of our schedule and the coach is being paid to win games.
Eli apologists treat him like he is a delicate little flower, The guy has had a great run and brought us 2 SB’s. His family is set for generations. The idea is to be able to walk away healthy. Eli knows deep down it is over, He will handle stepping aside like the true pro that he has always been.

Rong5611 : 10/17/2018 7:46 am : link
I'm thinking that happens soon. Not that we should be benching Eli, but the kid needs snaps. They need to see what they have.

"Stupid is as stupid does"
I wouldn't count on it happening just yet

In an interview with Lauletta earlier in the week, Lauletta stated that his only practice reps up to this point have been with the scout team.

interesting since PS said Tanney and KL get the same amount of reps

The case mostly
fkap : 10/17/2018 10:03 am : link
Starts with: He’s not Eli

By now they know if he has any shot at being in the nfl. If so, put him in after the bye. At that point, we’re playing for the top draft pick, so who cares?
I think we will see
Clintqb17 : 10/17/2018 10:46 am : link
him once we are mathematically out of it
at least elevate him to #2
NYG007 : 10/17/2018 11:56 am : link
and cut Tanney. Come on, this was a joke since the initial 53 came out. Its not funny anymore, cut that bum

Not sure I agree with this. It depends on the film. If Eli is not being held accountable to same level as other players, that could cause him to lose the team as well. My gut tells me the team would welcome a change. I think the OL would desperately appreciate someone that could bail them out if they miss a block. I am sure the OL feels under siege by the fans and media right now, every mistake they make is being highlighted everywhere. Honestly, I think a change would produce a spark.

Lauletta said in the interview that he and Tanney get equal time in the drills, but once the scrimmage starts his reps have been with the scout team.
