My guy is Clive Owen. I had such high hopes for him after Children of Men, but here are the Rotten Tomatoes scores of his last 11 movies:
25%, 50%, 30%, 82%, 52%, 43%, 14%, 91%, 48%, 39%, 46%.
Only two films not labeled as "rotten," and the highest of the bunch, The Confirmation at 91%, only had 32 reviews.
Who is your pick?
Parallels to like Eli? (I kid...but not really)
He was in the two Sherlock Holmes movies, a 3rd is on the way I believe. He makes an absurd amount of money for each Marvel film he stars in so he doesn't need to really do anything else. RDJ made over 63 million alone for co-starring in Civil War. He has made over $240 million for his roles in Marvel films so far. That doesn't even include Avengers 4.
Yeah Jack Black for me as well. I love Jack Black but he hasn't been in a good movie for some time.
To your second point, yes, I get WHY he does it, but it sucks. He made a bunch of very good movies for a while before becoming consumed with Iron Man - Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, A Scanner Darkly, Zodiac, Tropic Thunder, The Soloist, the two Sherlock Holmes movies. Even Due Date had its moments.
The Front Runner
The Greatest Showman
Eddie The Eagle
Pan
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
Dukale's Dream
Chappie
Prisoners
Movie 43
Les Misérables
Rise of the Guardians
Butter
Real Steel
Snow Flower And The Secret Fan
Oh My God
Australia
Deception
ShowBusiness: The Road to Broadway
The Fountain
Happy Feet
Flushed Away
The Prestige
Scoop
Van Helsing
Kate & Leopold
Swordfish
Someone Like You
On Jaws The Revenge: "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.”
I liked it too. RDJ basically made a cameo in the movie. Due Date was a funny movie, I forgot about that one.

I know some hate him, but he cracks me up. I think his delivery is great.
Ditto on this. I love his dry, but sarcastic delivery. But, he's made some bad movies lately.
Date Night was great, though!
De Niro is obvious. Meryl Streep also.
Gerard Butler is a pretty good actor and he is in absolute rubbish.
Brownie points for honesty.
I can't even fathom that it's the same person...

And its not like he needs the money. He has invested well in Tribeca also.

I put Edward Norton, Jr in this category.
After Primal Fear, Amrican History X, Fight Club and Rounders I thought he was the next Daniel Day Louis.
But in hockey fights when a guy comes out swinging and loses steam quickly they say "too much too soon" and that's probably what happened with Norton, Jr.
I must also admit I did like the Illusionist, but otherwise his career has not fulfilled the trajectory I expected based on the fast start.
caveat...I have not seen Birdman.

DeNiro and Norton in the same post and no mention of The Score?? I haven’t watched that movie in about 10 years but I thought it was pretty damn good.

Hes on the family friendly kick and you want to know what? He ptob makes.more dough with those movies
I don't even remember him in that, what role did he have?

Oh come on Dirty Grandpa was really funny.
the Carrot was pretty good.

Jon Favreau is a fairly high profile chef who chucks it all and opens a taco truck. I enjoyed it. (RDJ's role isn't all that big).
I don't even remember him in that, what role did he have?
His ex-wife's ex-husband.
Favreau asks him for cash.
What is likeable about Rob Schneider?

is really embarrassing. I can't believe the same guy who did Deer Hunter, GF2, Goodfellas, Heat, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, etc, etc is doing movies like Dirty Grandpa.

Overrated. He plays the same character in every movie. Rickels said to him doing a scene in Casino "Enough with the method acting and the breathing. Say the fucking line and let's get outta here!" Pacino runs rings around him, always did.
I imagine he tends to gravitate towards similar roles, sure. But imagine a room consisting of his characters from Awakenings, Cape Fear, Mad Dog and Glory, and Goodfellas. Those are all vastly different people, and some would be terrified of the other.

I'm joking. This thread reminded me of a south park episode where they made fun of the fact he'd star in anything. For a serious answer, De Niro and Pacino over the years.
Hollywood is not putting out good product any longer.
The comic book stuff is out of control, digging up obscure characters in order to make a movie. Seems that the writers have gone to lunch and forgot to return.
Looking at the names mentioned - many are upper 70s and some were marginal anyway.
I think with HBO, Netflix, Showtime, Amazon, etc., doing their own writing and producing it is harder for "name" actors to get decent roles.
Johnny Depp has literally become Jack Sparrow. I'm not sure that's a bad thing though.
