NFT: Actors/Actresses you like but they keep making crap movies

Mike in Long Beach : 10/17/2018 11:14 am
My guy is Clive Owen. I had such high hopes for him after Children of Men, but here are the Rotten Tomatoes scores of his last 11 movies:

25%, 50%, 30%, 82%, 52%, 43%, 14%, 91%, 48%, 39%, 46%.

Only two films not labeled as "rotten," and the highest of the bunch, The Confirmation at 91%, only had 32 reviews.

Who is your pick?
Eli Manning

The great Bob De Niro...

Sometimes what happens is this:
UESBLUE : 10/17/2018 11:30 am : link
An actor who started out as very serious (theatre, Shakespeare etc) does an actioner or two and immediately gets a following. Then their choice is to make millions in another one no matter how crappy, or make chump chancge doing a "film." Its not always an easy choice.
Obviously De Niro immediately comes to mind
regulator : 10/17/2018 11:36 am : link
A string of garbage, raunchy comedies and outspoken, combative political activism (more provocative talk than real activism, to be fair) make his best work of the 70s through early 90s seem like an eternity ago.

Parallels to like Eli? (I kid...but not really)
Jason Bateman
Csonka : 10/17/2018 11:36 am : link
I know some hate him, but he cracks me up. I think his delivery is great.
For a long time, it was Matthew McConaughey,
Mad Mike : 10/17/2018 11:36 am : link
but then he went on a really great run. As mentioned, De Niro, and Pacino's right there with him. Eddie Murphy certainly started his film career off with a bang, but has done mostly crap for 30 years now. Michael Caine might be the all-time champ - he's had some good films in recent years (mostly thanks to Christopher Nolan), but man, that guy just doesn't turn stuff down. As long as the checks clear, I guess.
Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino almost seem like they've

Ryan Reynolds...

I know he has had recent success with his role in Deadpool, but he's more of a romantic comedy guy. The Deadpool role as an obnoxious and socially toxic character is awful.

I think Ryan Reynolds
PaulBlakeTSU : 10/17/2018 11:44 am : link
is perfect as Deadpool. I never heard of the comic book character before the movies, but I did hear that the writers started to model him after Ryan Reynolds.
Robert Downey Jr
Greg from LI : 10/17/2018 11:44 am : link
I despise comic book movies, and all he does anymore is Iron Man. I think The Judge is the only non-Iron Man role he's had in a decade.
Clive Owen did Shoot em Up and

Jack Black
Giantfan in skinland : 10/17/2018 11:53 am : link
Has done some incredibly funny stuff in his past....most of the movies I see him in now cast him in an incredibly generic one-note type role (ex. Junanji).

He was in the two Sherlock Holmes movies, a 3rd is on the way I believe. He makes an absurd amount of money for each Marvel film he stars in so he doesn't need to really do anything else. RDJ made over 63 million alone for co-starring in Civil War. He has made over $240 million for his roles in Marvel films so far. That doesn't even include Avengers 4.

Yeah Jack Black for me as well. I love Jack Black but he hasn't been in a good movie for some time.
I did like Sherlock Holmes
Greg from LI : 10/17/2018 12:06 pm : link
Thought those were further in the past....ok, looking them up, the first one was 2009 and the sequel was 2011. Since the sequel in 2011, six of his eight films have been comic book. The others were The Judge, and Chef, which I've never heard of.

To your second point, yes, I get WHY he does it, but it sucks. He made a bunch of very good movies for a while before becoming consumed with Iron Man - Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, A Scanner Darkly, Zodiac, Tropic Thunder, The Soloist, the two Sherlock Holmes movies. Even Due Date had its moments.
I’m with Greg on Downey
UConn4523 : 10/17/2018 12:08 pm : link
and will add Jackman for the same reason. So many fucking Wolverine movies when I’d rather watch him in literally anything else. “Prisoners” was awesome and I thought that would get him off the comic book kick, but the money was too good I guess.

Overrated. He plays the same character in every movie. Rickels said to him doing a scene in Casino "Enough with the method acting and the breathing. Say the fucking line and let's get outta here!" Pacino runs rings around him, always did.

and it's sad to watch. or not.

I put Edward Norton, Jr in this category.

After Primal Fear, Amrican History X, Fight Club and Rounders I thought he was the next Daniel Day Louis.

But in hockey fights when a guy comes out swinging and loses steam quickly they say "too much too soon" and that's probably what happened with Norton, Jr.

I must also admit I did like the Illusionist, but otherwise his career has not fulfilled the trajectory I expected based on the fast start.

caveat...I have not seen Birdman.

DeNiro and Norton in the same post and no mention of The Score?? I haven’t watched that movie in about 10 years but I thought it was pretty damn good.

I imagine he tends to gravitate towards similar roles, sure. But imagine a room consisting of his characters from Awakenings, Cape Fear, Mad Dog and Glory, and Goodfellas. Those are all vastly different people, and some would be terrified of the other.

I'm joking. This thread reminded me of a south park episode where they made fun of the fact he'd star in anything. For a serious answer, De Niro and Pacino over the years.
I think the problem
mdc1 : 10/20/2018 4:29 pm : link
is that we need much younger and talented actors. Quite frankly I am tired of watching these old actors trotted out to the masses, sometimes creating movies that adjust to their age or mock it respectfully. I am not young, but seriously do not want senior citizens on movies and shows.

Hollywood is not putting out good product any longer.

mdc1 : 10/20/2018 4:32 pm : link
we seem to have a political movement to create unrealistic movies by replacing males with females. weird. One commercial I saw today, a bunch of husbands get killed by bad guys, then the widows become assassins and take revenge and apparently kill all the bad guys. Horrendous, even Tartentino had more imagination with Kill Bill.

Such a dearth of decent movies. We get maybe two or three per year.
The comic book stuff is out of control, digging up obscure characters in order to make a movie. Seems that the writers have gone to lunch and forgot to return.

Looking at the names mentioned - many are upper 70s and some were marginal anyway.

I think with HBO, Netflix, Showtime, Amazon, etc., doing their own writing and producing it is harder for "name" actors to get decent roles.
