LT was almost a Cowboy???

bigblue12 : 10/17/2018 4:04 pm
I never heard this one before from Gil Brandt.

I called Bum Phillips before the '81 draft, offered Saints a deal they couldn't refuse for the top overall pick, and Bum refused it anyway. Saints took RB George Rogers and LT went second to the Giants. Never more disappointed than the one that got away on that day.

funny people talk about Rogers like he was Sam Bowie, but rookie season Rogers lead the entire league in yards 1,674, 13 TD's and he DID make 2 pro-bowls as well as first team all-pro as a rookie.
And he wore #56

As a tribute to Cowboys linebacker Hollywood Henderson.

"Lawrence Taylor, perhaps the greatest player ever at the position, said that he was inspired to wear 56 because it was Henderson's number."

There was a book about the '70s rivalry between the Steelers and

Cowboys. It's called The Ones Who Hit the Hardest and it was a pretty good book. Anyway, there's a section in there about Gil Brandt, and in it he talks about being on a plane before the 1981 draft where he happened to be seated next to George Young. Brandt absolutely coveted LT and, as the OP says, tried to swing a deal with the Saints to get the #1 pick. Shortly after the Saints rejected that offer, Brandt was on this plane, and he said it killed him to sit there next to Young and know that the Giants were going to draft LT and there was nothing he could offer them in a trade to get that #2 pick. He mentioned how the Cowboys had fleeced the Giants in the 1974 trade that sent Morton for the #2 overall pick that became Randy White and how he knew Young wouldn't repeat that mistake with a player even better than White.

I hated those two teams in the '70's. We continuously sucked from the early '60's and we would get stomped by the Cowboys. Both these teams had great players and I was jealous of the Steelers but really hated the Cowboys. Still do. Our team is as pathetic today but at least the Cowboys are only average.

Which makes the Eagles winning it all last year suck even more.
They got Tom Landry

George Young told this story once

I don't remember exactly how it goes, but it had something to do with being on a flight with either Brandt or Phillips, and being nervous that somehow LT would get taken before they picked.
Almost Reggie White too

I realize G-Men needed an Olineman and Bart Oates did well.

But I often dream of a Reggie Lawrence duo crushing QB's.

It was not Bart Oates instead of Reggie White. It was Gary Zimmerman who is in the HOF. But who said he would never play in NY.

One of George Young's biggest short comings was that he believed players should never have any rights about anything especially where they played. He treated all the players like disposable pieces of meat. See 1987 & 1993 forward as examples of how that turned out.

Parcells wanted Reggie he was over ruled. Good thing for Montana and Walsh because if Reggie White and LT played together with the rest of the mid 80's core of that defense the Giants would have won much more than 2 Super Bowls.

Young turned Zimmerman into two 2nd round picks by trading him to the Vikings. The linked article say those picks were Mark Collins and Greg Lasker. If I remember correctly actually Erik Howard was picked with the Vikings pick not Collins. Regardless Lasker was a bust but Howard and Collins whichever one it was were very good players. But of course nothing close to Reggie White.
If NY Giants coach Bill Parcells got his way in 1984 draft, Reggie White would have been Lawrence Taylor's teammate - ( New Window )
the Giants had four 2nd round picks in 1986
Greg from LI : 10/18/2018 4:11 pm : link
Erik Howard was the Giants' own second round pick at #46. Collins at #44 and Lasker at #53 were picks received from the Vikings in the Zimmerman deal. Pepper Johnson at #51 was a pick received from the Broncos in the Mark Haynes trade.

Fun fact: the Vikings got the #53 pick from the Raiders in a trade for.....Brad Van Pelt. The Giants had traded Van Pelt to the Vikings for Tony Galbreath in the summer of 1984. Van Pelt had requested a trade to a California team and refused to report to the Vikings. The Vikings then traded him to the Raiders for two draft picks, one of which was the #53 overall pick in 1986.
