Hi. Periodically there are requests for podcast recommendations. My recollection is that they are understandably sports-heavy.
My requests:
1. Recommendations for podcasts on culture (high and popular), news, societal issues etc.
2. Recommendations on android apps that make it easy to harvest podcasts and save them when off-line.
TIA

Serial - season 1 covers a murder of a HS girl. Season 2 is about Bo Bergdahl going awol and being captured, season 3 just started and is about the court system in Cleveland OH.
Criminal - hosts be Phoebe Judge who is absolutely fantastic. It’s episodic and covers “crime” of all sorts - ie, Venus fly trap black market, stolen bourbon, an older lady who ran the first known pot bakery decades ago, etc.
Up and Vanished - season 1 was about the murder of a beauty pageant school teacher in a small GA town. The host helped to reopen he case and it’s almost in real time which is cool. Season 2 just started and it’s about the disappearance of a young mom in a weird spiritual town in Colorado.
Crimetown - looks into the corruption of a Providence mayor and his USA to the mob.
STown - don’t want to ruin it with a description, but it’s awesome.

I will add Atlanta Monster... and Up and Vanished spinoff to the list as well.

Serial, Criminal, Up and Vanished (season 2 has been great), Crimtown are all very good and cover a wide range of the crime spectrum.

For whatever reason I couldn't get into Atlanta Monster. Just felt like it was going nowhere the whole time and I eventually gave up.
One is for gamers called The Retro Gamers. The other is married life and single life (not all about that, just all around funny things in general) and they are called The Better Half and lastly The Yin and the Yang about life and martial arts and MMA (again not all about that) Check them out as they are all really good.
Season 1 is simply fantastic. Sarah Koenig is just awesome, she does an incredible job staying objective and telling a story. Another to add is “This is love”. It’s Phoebe Judges side project and it’s about relationships. Like Criminal each episode is different and doesn’t necessarily cover material you think it does, for example, 1 episode is about a women swimming (I think the English Channel or something like that) and somehow connected with a baby whale that lost its way. She stayed with it for hours until help arrived and the episode is about their connection. Sounds corny from me but I thought it was really cool - they are like 20 minutes each.

The Rubin Report
+1 on the Rubin Report.
I try to listen to all of Pod Save America, The Ben Shapiro Show, The Rubin Report, and Waking up With Sam Harris to get a really diversified set of political takes. (Not every episode of each — that would be a great way to
burn out and get completely apathetic to politics).
I also rarely skip an episode of Joe Rogan’s Podcast. So many diverse topics it’s unbelievable.
I guess there is no app that is singled out.
I vote for Rogan as well. He has a wide variety of guests, talking about a wide variety of topics.
His episodes that are MMA-related are clearly titled as such; very easy to avoid in my experience.
I do skip those, mostly. I was referring to his slate of non-MMA guests when I said I basically listen to all of them.
Do yourself a favor, don't listen to season 2 of serial. I didn't find it all that interesting. I would go to S-Town and then maybe Up and Vanished.

a lot, and I like MMA/UFC, but I hate when he talks MMA/UFC, so I've been avoiding his podcast or lowering it on my list and sometimes I never get to it, but his podcast is usually great and was probably the first podcast I began listening to.

Thanks, good to know since I'm already spending too much time on sports :)
