I'm making a Pumpkin Praline pie recipe (trial run for thanksgiving) that calls for egg custard mix which is tough to find. Can I substitue vanilla pudding mix instead?
and would like to follow the recipe as closely as possible.
I'd appreciate an other advice.
Thanks!
Without the recipe it's hard to say - but if they're calling for prepared egg custard mix, I find it hard to believe an actual egg custard wouldn't be a good substitute.
Otherwise - not sure vanilla custard/pudding would be a good swap, you'd figure the egg custard would be much more rich.
Pumpkin Praline Pie
1 Pie
9’’ Deep Dish Frozen Pie Crust
1/3 c butter
1/3 cup brown sugar
½ cup chopped pecans
1 (4 and ½ oz) pkg egg custard mix
1 - 16oz can pumpkin
1/3 cup sugar
½ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp nutmeg
1 pinch salt
1 – 13 oz can evap milk
1 egg yolk
1 tsp ginger
1- Bake frozen crust at 450 for 10 min
2- Allow to cool slightly
3 – Combine butter and brown sugar in small pot. Cook until bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in pecans. Spread mixture on prebaked pie shell. Bake an additional 5-6 min at 450. Allow to cool until mixture is hard. Combine remaining ingredients in a large pot and blend well. Stir over medium heat until mixture comes to a boil and begins to thicken. Pour into prebaked pie shell and allow to cool thoroughly.
4 – Refrigerate until ready to serve – a minimum of 3 hours
5 - Remove pie from refrigerator 10 – 15 min before serving time. Top with whipped cream or ice cream.
Basically a custard containing pumpkin pie spice (which is the cloves, ginger, nutmeg, etc) and pumpkin puree. So, IMO the Martha recipe (or any other on the internet) would work. Just top with pecans. Me, I usually make both a pecan and a pumpkin pie and not blend the two.
Unless you're in a rush, I'd just order the custard mix from Amazon Â
You've never made the recipe with the correct ingredients before, so you have no baseline. Without that, how would you know if it came out right if you used different ingredients?
I have made this recipe in the past with the correct ingredients. It's out of this world. Highly recommended. But, as I mentioned jello discontinued their custard mix.
I admire your ambition my friend but you’re really over thinking this. Baking pies is easy. Simply tell your wife what kind of pie she’s going to bake for you. Problem solved. It may take awhile though so make sure she makes you a sandwich beforehand.
I'd appreciate an other advice.
Thanks!

Closest thing IMO would be the Jello Custard mix - that should exist in a supermarket near you.
After looking at the recipe, an egg custard wouldn't work since it would throw the hydration totally off.
**slowly backs out of the room**
But, jello does not make custard pudding mix anymore they discontinued it which is why I'm asking for a substitute.
Would this work?
The problem is I'd like to make it this week and don't want to wait for it to get delivered.
Would vanilla pudding mix make that big of a difference?
Thanks again!

Which amazon custard mix would be good?
I just bought the creme brulee mix linked below.
Also, I found a recommendation online that recommends substituting vanilla pudding mix instead.

You’re welcome
Would flan Spanish custard mix make a better substitute?

It’s like watching the great British bake-off.
