as alternative to college 1-and-done route.
As part of a newly formed "professional path" starting in the summer of 2019, the G League will offer "Select Contracts" worth $125,000 to elite prospects who are at least 18 years old but not yet eligible for the NBA draft. It will target recent or would-be high school graduates who otherwise would have likely spent just one season playing college basketball, enticing them not only with a six-figure salary but also the opportunity to benefit from NBA infrastructure, as well as a bevy of off-court development programs "geared towards facilitating and accelerating their transition to the pro game," Turner said. |
G League to offer $125K to elite prospects as alternative to college 1-and-done route - (
New Window )
Helps streamline prospects to the NBA while making the G-league more enticing.
Furthermore how many kids THINK they are going tot he NBA and only plan to be there for a year and have their dreams crushed ?
all upside here
(I actually like this idea, the current situation in college BB is ridiculous.)
Just pay them more than $125K
Coach K knows how to do it the right way. He'll be fine. Calipari is screwed though.
This seems unfair to the kids who aren't offered these select $125K contracts. Why shouldn't they be able to enter the Draft if they developed into a top prospect at 19 after a year of college ball? Why should the desire to stabilize college basketball-- a completely separate entity from the NBA-- prevent adults from the ability to make a living.
Any way, its still not enough money. They get more under the table from the schools.

Recruit actual student athletes? Actually develop kids?

You mean now that Capel moved on to Pitt?

Just pay them more than $125K
Or just pay them $100K cash. Better than the tax rate.
It also won't put a dent into college basketball enthusiasm. If anything, I think it will show the value that college basketball gives to many of these kids in that they get prime time exposure and can build their brand (despite not being able to turn a profit on that brand while in school).
When players like Zion Williamson have high school clips garner millions of views and his high school games are streamed in large numbers, I think a lot of what drives those numbers is the excitement of him as a college prospect for where he will go to school, and then excitement about him dominating in college.
If it's like baseball where he goes straight to the minor leagues, I'm not sure the general public will care as much about him until close to the NBA Draft.
On a side note my very good friend has worked for the WWE for years, and he told me that one of the rumors regarding the XFL is that they want to undercut the NFLs eligibility rule to attempt to get big names that want to get paid sooner than their draft eligibility. He cautioned me that it was just a rumor floating around his office and he had no direct knowledge of too much with regards to the XFL
