NFT: Question for BBI painters

DC Gmen Fan : 10/18/2018 4:04 pm
If I want to prime the walls of a room now, but not paint for 3 or 4 months, is there any issue with that, iow does primer lose effectiveness after a period of time?

Thanks
I don't have the answer, I wouldn't think so.....

but curious... Why would you prime and not paint for 3-4 months? Why not just knock it all out at the same time?
NO problem doing that...

at all
Because it's a nursery I'm remodeling

baby due in January, not finding out sex. Would like to get as much done now as I can so all I have to do is paint when we know what color.
Ah....

Congrats!!!
Thanks!

yeah I'd rather prime now and let it off gas as much as possible
Depending on how colorful the wall currently is,

they do make self priming paint, which has the primer and paint in one single application. I've used it with no problems, as long as the wall wasn't too dark and fairly neutral.
Primer seals
I Love Clams Casino : 10/18/2018 4:20 pm : link
so paint is not soaked up by the rock...the sealing properties of primer does not diminish over time, so this would be perfectly fine

Paint it yellow
No, it's not less effective
jcn56 : 10/18/2018 4:23 pm : link
but it won't be as 'clean' as a freshly primed wall because of dust and dirt. If there's not much traffic in that room, I wouldn't worry about that (and congrats!).
Just remember to vacuum the walls

When you go to paint in a few months!

You wouldn't believe how much dust and cobwebs and crap collects on the walls.

I would generally agree with this. As a technical manner, once the primer fully cures, the topcoat will not adhere to it quite as well. But it’s probably not enough to worry about provided you’re using quality paints.
I use Ben Moore

The Ben Moore Regal has a primer built in but I want to do a prime coat mainly to hide the current color better.

Thanks for the info guys

Regal (and other similarly marketed paints) don’t really have primers built in. A quality primer does 4 things:

1) Seals surfaces to prevent bleed thru.
2) Adheres extremely well to surfaces.
3) Topcoats adhere extremely well to it.
4) Blocks colors of previous coats of paint.

Paints like Regal that advertise being paint & primer in one have a high pigment content, and thus do a good job at color blocking. But it’s not a true primer, so it doesn’t do any of the first 3 jobs a primer does.
If you planned to also paint the ceiling...
EricJ : 10/18/2018 5:33 pm : link
then do that now as well.
