If I want to prime the walls of a room now, but not paint for 3 or 4 months, is there any issue with that, iow does primer lose effectiveness after a period of time?
Thanks
I don't have the answer, I wouldn't think so..... Â
they do make self priming paint, which has the primer and paint in one single application. I've used it with no problems, as long as the wall wasn't too dark and fairly neutral.
but it won't be as 'clean' as a freshly primed wall because of dust and dirt. If there's not much traffic in that room, I wouldn't worry about that (and congrats!).

I would generally agree with this. As a technical manner, once the primer fully cures, the topcoat will not adhere to it quite as well. But it’s probably not enough to worry about provided you’re using quality paints.
The Ben Moore Regal has a primer built in but I want to do a prime coat mainly to hide the current color better.
Thanks for the info guys
Regal (and other similarly marketed paints) don’t really have primers built in. A quality primer does 4 things:
1) Seals surfaces to prevent bleed thru.
2) Adheres extremely well to surfaces.
3) Topcoats adhere extremely well to it.
4) Blocks colors of previous coats of paint.
Paints like Regal that advertise being paint & primer in one have a high pigment content, and thus do a good job at color blocking. But it’s not a true primer, so it doesn’t do any of the first 3 jobs a primer does.
Paint it yellow
You wouldn't believe how much dust and cobwebs and crap collects on the walls.
