The center position

Milton : 10/18/2018 4:13 pm
If the Giants can make a big splash at center next year it will go a long way towards improving the offense. I'm not saying it's more important than adding an OT or passrusher (or QB for those of you convinced that neither Eli nor Lauletta is the answer), but it can be easier to find. Is there a center that a projects to be a premium pick in next year's draft (i.e, worthy of a 1st or 2nd round pick)? Perhaps there's a top college OG who projects to OC, because none of the names at the center position appear in any draftnik's top 60 at this point in the process.

Free agency is even harder to project because anyone worth their salt is likely to be re-signed, but sometimes cap considerations make it possible. Mitch Morse on KC and Nick Easton of Minnesota are in their contract years (with Easton having the advantage of having played in Shurmur's offense). Ali Marpet is an OG with Tampa who can also play center (supposedly). I loved him in the draft, but he's a former 2nd round pick who the Bucs will want back.

Of course money talks and bullshit walks and since none of the three I mentioned will be franchise-tag-worthy, they may want to see what the open market offers before agreeing to anything with their current teams.
Huge effect on pocket movement of QB
gmenatlarge : 10/18/2018 4:18 pm : link
If your center is constantly losing the battle up front there is no pocket to step up into. We haven’t had one who could win the battle up front since Forever.
Early, but I don't recall any centers in the...
MOOPS : 10/18/2018 4:23 pm : link
draft being touted as higher than 3rd round.
They'll be guards available that are late 1st and 2nd round worthy, and RG is as much of a need for us as center. Omameh is pretty bad (putting it mildly).
Rather build the OL through the draft than commit FA dollars there.
I am curious as to what Pulley and Brown
Rjanyg : 10/18/2018 4:32 pm : link
have as far as starting potential. Greco seems to be the one Shurmur has the most confidence in right now. I would like to see Greco move to RG and one of Brown or Pulley get a couple starts. Omameh is a bad signing, would have been better off re-signing Fluker and keeping Jones.

I think they'll stick with Halapio
BillT : 10/18/2018 5:05 pm : link
Compared to who they have at RG and RT, Halapio is probably closer to being at least average than RG and RT. Given upgrading two spots is a lot for any one off season it's those spots that take priority. If they can upgrade those two spots Halapio would be the better bet hold on for another year.
shurmur himself
japanhead : 10/18/2018 5:17 pm : link
is a former center and has said he believes its the most important position on the line. how that impacts drafting who knows. not sure what he didnt like in jones beyond the salary cap hit.
Ali Marpet

Already signed an extension recently so you can cross him off that list.
Dalton Risner
tyrik13 : 10/18/2018 6:30 pm : link
From Kansas State should be the top C on the board and is projected as a 2nd rd pick..

I have a feeling they really like this guy Evan Brown. He is on the active roster. They are probably getting him schooled up as well as bigger and stronger for next year. The RG and RT will be the issue next year. Hopefully he is another Seubert...Brown that is.

He can play OT and G as well. Almost every mock draft has him going in the 1st round. Many have him as the 3rd or 4th OL off the board. If Risner is on the board for the Giants in round 2 he would be a fantastic pick. The Giants are desperate for a versatile player like him.
I would like to see the Giants spend on a RT
Jay on the Island : 10/18/2018 7:09 pm : link
Ja'Wuan James, Donovan Smith, or Trent Brown and then sign a cheaper option like Nick Easton for center. I like Evan Brown's upside but the Giants need a legitimate option at center if he isn't ready. Easton can also play guard and he was very solid at left guard for the Vikings last season. James/Smith/Brown, Easton, and a day two pick would go a long way towards fixing the offensive line.
The Giants have been
phil in arizona : 10/18/2018 7:51 pm : link
spent a lot of premium resources on non-premium positions.

Look at the drafts:

2012- RB (round 1)
2013- G (round 1)
2014- C (round 2)
2015- Strong Safety (round 2 + another pick)
2016- SLOT WR (round 2)
2017- SLOT WR/TE Hybrid (round 1)
2018- RB/G (round 1 and 2)

I'm not saying that some of these weren't the right call. For example, we absolutely nailed the first two 2018 picks. I just can't help but look back and think, couldn't they have found some of these answers later in the draft?

Engram Was a Mistake
Samiam : 10/18/2018 10:22 pm : link
Should have gone with Ramzyk (sp?). The Giants could have gotten a decent to good TE much later in the draft, I’m beginning to think Shepard was a mistake also. If there was a decent OL, we could have had a pretty good OL and good slot receivers are also available later in the draft. We’ve wasted premium picks behind a crap OL

You are correct. Engram was drafted to open things up for OBJ. Hasn't really gone accordingly to plan.

The game is won in the trenches. Reese didn't seem to get this.

Up to what round Sy? I know gems can be found in any round, but iyo, how many rounds do you forecast as rather strong or simply good in Cs?

If Engrams catch rate didn't suck, he would have been a good pick. Also, if Macadoo didn't wear a disguise, we might have ended up with Mahomes there. Shepard was absolutely a mistake. I am looking forward to a real #2, with size, next year. Plenty to be had in the NFL or draft. C as a FA, RG and RT in the draft or trade.
Anyone know how James Daniels is doing in Chicago
JoeyBigBlue : 10/19/2018 8:58 am : link
I remember wanting him over Hernandez last year in round 2.
now why is the argument for a sumo quick footed wrestler
gtt350 : 10/19/2018 10:57 am : link
a bad one for center. 420lbs is not going backward
they absolutely must get 3 new starters on the OL
GiantsFan84 : 10/19/2018 1:12 pm : link
i would much rather them not pay collins and use that money for the OL
