Sam Darnold vs Eli Manning numbers comparison.....

sxdxca : 10/19/2018 2:04 am
Its been stated here, more than a few times, that no QB could succeed with the Offensive line the Giants have. That if a rookie QB started playing behind this line, it would ruin him, but Is that true?

Interestingly enough the Jets offensive line is currently ranked 21st in the NFL, only four spots ahead of the Giants who are ranked 25th. Sam Darnold is a rookie, and only 21 years old, but has the Jets offensive line ruined him? And compared to Eli, who is a 15 year vet, how do there numbers compare?

These are Eli Manning's numbers
1,662 yards 68.7% 6 TD 4 Int 90.9 Rating

These are Sam Darnold's numbers
1,346 yards 59.8% 9 TD 7 Int 83.7 Rating

On the surface, it would seem as though Eli is the better QB, but those numbers can be misleading. (more on that later)

What is interesting, is as bad as the Jets offensive line is, with Darnold at QB they are averaging 27.5 ppg on Offense. The Giants on the other hand, with a 15 year vet are only averaging 19.5 ppg.

Has the Jets poor offensive line ruined Darnold, as some have claimed would happen if he was a Giant? Evidently not. Therefore if Darnold was starting behind the Giants offensive line, which is only graded four points worse than the Jets, it seems as though he would still be productive and thriving.

Eli Manning has thrown for 300 yards more than Darnold this year, however It seems as though those numbers are a bit misleading. After further analysis, Eli Manning has thrown for almost 600 yards in the 4th quarter alone, this shows that he is able to pad his stats against prevent defenses, when the game is clearly over.

Darnold seems to thrive in the 2nd quarter throwing for over 500 yards and 4 TD's, right in the middle or heart of the game. His teams have scored 40 points twice, and 30 points three times in just six games.

Shockingly, Darnold is doing this, with a bottom 5 receiving core, and an average offensive line ranked 21st. He does have a running game though, averaging about 130 yards per game on the ground, compared to the Giants team who averages about 87 yards per game, but It seems as though he is able to do more with less.

The question is, if Darnold was on the Giants, surrounded with Beckham, Engram and Shepard, all 1st and 2nd rd picks, how much more productive would he be, with an elite recieving core?

Strangely, Dave Gettleman used the #2 pick in the draft on a RB. Evidently by this decision he felt no QB was worth the #2 pick in the draft, even though Darnold fell right in his lap, and was considered to be the consensus #1 pick.

By equipping Eli and the Giants, with the best RB in the game, a top 5 WR, an emerging star at TE, another 2nd rd pick at WR, and spending almost 177 million in cap space, the team in a must win game against the Eagles scored 13 points.

Last night we all saw rookie Josh Rosen's Cardinals go up against the Broncos and they put up 10 points. Interestingly, Darnold's Jets played the same broncos team two weeks ago, and put up 34 points and won the game convincingly.

For the Giant fans out there who wanted Darnold, we can only imagine what the Giants would be like if he was starting for us?

Would Darnold even be starting for us??

I don't know, because our front office foolishly did not trade or release Eli in the offseason when the planets aligned for them to transition from one franchise quarterback to another.
I don't know.

That's what should happen.

What I think will happen:

1) Eli is on the team next year and starts the 2019 season as the first string
2) We draft Herbert (who IMO is super raw and would be better served going to a top coaching staff like Mahomes did)
3) We suck in 2019 and enlarge the black eye on Eli's legacy
4) We have a new GM and head coach in 2020
If they draft Herbert
Jim in Forest Hills : 10/19/2018 1:55 pm : link
I dont think they keep Eli. I agree that last year was the year to make the move.
Terps..
Sean : 10/19/2018 1:55 pm : link
Then the new GM/HC is saddled with Herbert? Thats bad business & just further emphasizes the cohesion problem here.

Cap plays a factor with Eli next year, it makes a ton of sense to move on based on financials.

I believe the plan would have been, to let Darnold sit a year under Eli - that seemed universal esp given Darnold's age.

Not that he couldn't have played this year of course.

And I think Darnold, without Barkley, would have been creamed this year had he started with this club from the start.

Best to let Eli take it for awhile.

Incredible that you STILL can't admit that Gettleman believing in Eli was a mistake and that passing on every QB in last year's extremely highly regarded QB class to take Barkley was the wrong pick! So fucking pathetic!

Herbert right now is literally nowhere close to as good as Darnold. The hope is that he continues to improve and that we have an opportunity to pick him in this year's draft. Because honestly, if you pay any attention to college football (and it seems that you don't) there is literally no other college QB this year who is worthy of being picked in the first round...Which only exacerbates last year's collasal fuck up.

Totally agree. Except I don't know if I put this on Mara. I truly believe Gettleman believed Eli had something left in the tank (don't know what he was watching the past 6 years). This is only on Mara if he demanded that whoever he hired as GM had to stick with Eli. And I still have a hard time imagining this to be the case (or maybe I'm hoping that wasn't the case). Either way, I agree...it's clear that Darnold is going to be a damn good player and passing on him was a huge mistake.

Bolded and underlined the only part of your whiny rant worth anything. RB's don't translate into wins, hence why it was an awful fucking decision. Darnold plays on a significantly worse team with a horrendous oline as well and no weapons and is .500. All while being the youngest starting QB in the history of the NFL. QB's equal wins. RB's don't.

So you're saying that Sam Darnold has single-handedly won those games for the Jets? Were we watching the same game? The same Sam Darnold who throws bubble screens and checkdowns on almost every passing play?

Stop making shit up to support your argument.

I can post actual statistical facts showing the Jets have the 22nd ranked passing oline in football but then you'd just say the stats are skewed or some other nonsense so no point wasting anyone's time.

And their run game? Ignoring that since it doesnt fit your narrative?

Jeff57, Josh in the City and a host of others say hi

I'd argue you've been the worst poster on this site for the past few years. Oh and I thought you don't make personal attacks? Basically you just complaing about anyone who criticizes Eli and praises Darnold (both which have been proven to be accurate assessments). Grow up.

You can argue it, but you'd be wrong. I can argue that the sky is green, but I'd be wrong too.

It wasn't a personal attack. I didn't attack your intellect or anything personal about you except your posting habits. I don't know you from Adam. I'm saying you're a terrible poster, which, objectively, you are. Maybe if you nut up and stop bitching and moaning on every post you make, you wouldn't be seen as such a whiny little bitch. You have the ability to change. You weren't born to be a shitty poster...

And bullshit. I've criticized Eli plenty. In fact, who do you think is leading the Herbert train? I'm sorry if I'm not ready to carve Darnold's bust in Canton. I admitted he's looked better than I thought, but I'm still not ready to anoint him as the greatest thing since sliced bread after 6 games.

It's not bitching when you disagree with management. They made a terrible decision in the draft and they deserve to be called on it. If you don't want to hear it then get off BBI.

See? This is where you have no self-awareness. You're not disagreeing. You're harping incessantly on these stupid, repetitive arguments. You sound absolutely ridiculous and, quite frankly, stupid when you post that we should've taken Darnold day in and day out. You don't have a crystal ball and you have absolutely no idea (and I mean NO idea) what the future entails. This season has been a disaster, but guess what? There's going to be another season next year and many more after that. We'll have our chance to find a WORTHY successor to Eli and that guy will have one of the most dangerous weapons in the NFL in Saquon Barkley.

And this is where YOU'RE missing the point. What options do we have now? Herbert or bust? Well if we don't get Herbert, then what? We could end up in QB hell for 5 years and by the time we get out guy, Saquon & Odell are on the back 9 of their careers. It's not about Darnold or bust...It was about QB or bust last yr. Put it this way...I truly do not believe there is another GM in football who would have made that same decision at #2. And THAT is the infuriating part and it 100% deserves to be harped on. At least until we find our QB.

Then we go another year without a QB. Guess what? 2018 wasn't the last year for QBs. 2019 won't be either. I know, hard to fathom.

Saquon and Odell will be the back-9 of their career by the time we get our guy? What? You're freaking out over a hypothetical? WHAT IF we don't get a franchise QB? Sam Darnold was the last franchise QB?
Getting a franchise QB isn't a given.
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/19/2018 5:12 pm : link
There isn't one every year. There's a very realistic possibility that the Giants go years between settling the QB position. They're on the clock for Saquon's contract. In 3-4 years they'll have a business decision to make. In that same time frame we might be re-living Barry Sanders' detroit lions experience.

That's true, but guess what? There is no indication that Darnold, Rosen, and Allen will be franchise QBs either. Who's to say they won't wind up like Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota and Blake Bortles? Or Sam Bradford? Or Mark Sanchez?

Time will tell, but the point is you have to trust your scouts and trust your own judgment.

No but morons like you want to put out 6 games as statistical proof that Darnold is some franchise QB

Here's a statistic for you Dilfer has more SB wins than Marino. He must be better right? THis place is full of idiots and morons
It will be a question debated for years
Vanzetti : 10/19/2018 8:01 pm : link
But what gets overlooked is that the Giants got a great player.

Yes, Darnold may turn out to be the better value because QB is just much more of an impact position. But it is not like Giants drafted another Flowers or Tony Mandarich #2.

I wanted a QB but Im fine with Barkley.

There is some indication. They're off to better starts than Jared Goff, so the odds are better than just a hail mary crapshoot. This group of QBs were more refined prospects than people were willing to give them credit for.

And that doesn't make them failproof, but they're not the same caliber of prospect as a Mark Sanchez.

Again, remains to be seen. They may or may not, but the point is that no one at this juncture can definitely say we made a mistake.

There's more proof than that. I think when you look at certain QB's early in their careers and you see that combination of physical tools, high football IQ, dedication to the game and the emotional maturity...it's almost tough to see QB's of that pedigree failing. Darnold is all of those things. And so was Eli for that matter

Literally nobody said Darnold had zero chance to make it in the NFL, and based on what he's done so far, you can't even claim he's doing anything.

after 6 games, the guy is going to make it or not in the NFL? Why don't you put this energy into predicting the MegaMillions numbers?

I don't dislike Darnold at all. And he looks pretty good now. But so did Sanchez at one point. My issue is the. Ever ending self created stat lines that "prove" some self created point.

I'll suggest(an opinion that isn't fact) that a "franchise"'. QB while important isn't as big. A deal as people here are making. I think Barkley will
Have a better career than Darnold at this point. I think his skill
Set is more unique. And that doesn't mean Darnold is going to be good or even great. This isn't an either or argument. Both teams may never sniff a Supebowl with both. The hand wringing and insanity and crazy mental
gymnastic posts after 6 games is lunacy

I would say there isn't a coach or GM in the league that would downplay the significance of a QB. They hired this coach based on his ability to work with Quarterbacks.
A very rough game for Darnold. Is he the answer for the Jets?

He's just a rookie, give the guy some time. I'm a huge Barkley fan. I get the frustration of some fans on this board that go overboard for a Darnold play and stay quiet during Barkley's crazy plays, but again he's just a rookie.

not surprisingly, there are a couple of posts saying Darnold played well today.

It is like people are so dug in on their takes that they won't even admit when the guy plays like crap, and laughably, one of the people who posted that regularly kills Eli.

FatMan in Charlotte : 10/21/2018 5:13 pm : link
how well it would go over if Eli had 3 INT's in a blowout loss and somebody said this, which I'm sure has been said before:

Actually I thought that Darnold played pretty well today, tough winds, primary receiver out, scrubs in. One pick went right off the hands and another bad route by WR, not to mention quite a few drops. Stats dont always tell the whole story, I thought he hung in there and competed.

Well the thing is that the biggest knock on Darnold prior to the draft was his ability to consistently give the ball to the other team.

This is what he is known for. I'm not sure we can call them rookie mistakes, it is what he has always done, and likely what he will continue to do.

Well, one of the most excruciatingly annoying things about the Darnold situation is that fans who ignore reasons for Manning's struggles, highlight the same reasons when Darnold struggles. The argument would be, well darnold is a rookie.

What they seem to miss is how many moving parts there are in football. There are many many times in a each football game where it seems obvious that a certain player is responsible for a negative play, but we have to look below the surface to see why a negative play occurred. I think they miss that.

Now, I'm not trying to explain this to YOU. You seem to get it.

I personally like to give rookie qbs extra time. We also should look a bit closer why a qb has a reputation of giving the ball to the other team. There can certainly be actual reasons versus the player making the same mistake over again.
