Anyone else feel a bit depressed about football

NewBlue : 10/21/2018 12:12 pm
It is so early in the year and I just don't have anything to root for. We are such a nightmare and now I could not care less about Dallas Vs Washington, or what Philly does, have to root for 1 win teams to win more so we get the first pick? Not enough get get me to watch games.
The Giants are too important to me, Sundays in the fall are like vacation days for me, but this vacation is hideous.

I'm not that bummed
George : 10/21/2018 12:49 pm : link
like a lot of people on this board, I was pretty sure this would be a crappy season and I prepared myself psychologically for a wasted autumn.

Now I've decided to watch games for the sake of trying to figure out what the Giants can do to improve their roster and game plan in coming years, and while that's not exactly fun or even terribly satisfying, it is a lot more interesting than I thought it would be.
Get excited about

The Knicks. They are a scrappy little team. These young players develope, Porzingis come back okay, and with the money they will have for FA, they could actually be pretty decent next year. They gave Boston everything they could handle last night with no Porzingis.

Back in the 80's when I was in my 20's, the result of the Giants game would determine if I was gonna be in a good or bad mood that week. I lived for Sunday afternoons.

Now, in my 50's, I get over losses in a matter of hours (sometimes minutes) instead of days. Somewhere along the line I came to realize that its really just entertainment, a game being played by a bunch of guys who I will never know, who have no real impact on my friends or families lives. There is enough else going on in the world to worry about rather than whether my favorite football teams wins or not. Plus, its not like we can control whats happening out there...if I had the power to change what is happening, well, then that would be worth worrying about. Unfortunately, all we can do is observe.
Not now.
Rick5 : 10/21/2018 1:27 pm : link
Once they lost their 4th game, I accepted the fact that they aren't going to be good this year. It doesn't bother me much now because I don't expect them to win many games.
No, but if it was five or ten years ago I would.

I lead a pretty full life, but the Giants are entwined in this life as some kind of family, my loved ones know the significance they have on my moods and attitude.
I will still go about my business although with a disappointing twinge in my gut.

I can't watch it unless I have fantasy reasons.

The current product is so bad it's gross. The constant bombardment of commercials is the equivalent of the league taking a dump on its fans and rule changes is making the quality of play really poor.

Dispassionate.. im a Giants fan.. been one for since i was a child, since the days of Spider Lockhardt who was my favorite player when i was a young'un..

Football is a sport. I watch it. I enjoy it.It just doesnt influence my mood or attitudes anymore. Sure I enjoy a win. And Superbowls are ever better..

Buy since my son was born 8 years ago, Ive gained a healthier perspective about the place of sports in my life, If he wants to sit with daddy and watch Kung Fu Panda football will wait.

Is the realization that this disaster is likely to continue for years. No confidence in Mara, DG or this coach. Knicks finally figured out how to rebuild through youth. Rangers the same. Yankees did it a few years ago. I would rather watch any of those teams than the Giants.
It's not just the Giants.

The whole NFL sucks. It's fucking volleyball now. Goodell sucks. Tagliabue sucked. The whiney over-paid players suck for the most part. The television coverage sucks. You can see all of this in the stands and in the boob tube ratings.

I used to watch three NFL games a week, four games a week when possible. Now I don't watch any. The NFL has basically lost me as a fan.

It's really nice to see excellence.

Maybe the Giants should take a seat in my high school bleachers to see how winners play the game.

Couldn't hurt.

Yeah cause the Giants never have won anything in the last 20 years and Giant fans have it soooo bad. Save me your gloom and doom grief. Other sports fans have it way worse and never have seen their team win a championship. Have fun with your high school team. I don't think Barkley has to sit in their b!eachers to learn how to win football games. Ugh.

I don't take it as serious as I use too although you wouldn't know it when i am bitching at the TV .
The part that get's me the most is how JR just wasted so
many picks and fail miserably to keep the trenches solid he
ended up overpaying for defenders .and not having any success developing players . LB's O-line players TE's ect
Eli should have had a line to play behind so he last six
years were just a waste of his career .
NFL in general is sloppy the rule changes have taken the fun out of the game .
It's been forever since this team dominated a game from start to finish The Eli magic is no longer but it's gonna be sad when the end happens
Red Dog, I agree. It is the Giants only for me. Many of today's fans
carpoon : 10/21/2018 3:26 pm : link
couldn't have handled our team of the late'60's and the '70's. There are more front-runner fans today that just can't handle adversity. The fans that hung with the Giants through that era were truly dedicated fans.

The Knicks were a dumpster fire for over a decade. Don't dare tell me they know how to rebuild now. Where are the Rangers and Knicks recent championships? The Giants have more championships in the last 15 years than the Yankees.

Front runners or fair-weather fans just disappear, I, like you and most on this board will watch every game regardless of how pathetic they are, I went through the garbage years before Parcells. My dad took me to the Yankee Stadium years with the likes of Norm Snead, Randy Johnson, I went up to Yale Bowl for a few years to follow those turkey teams that never won anything, to Shea Stadium for a year until Giants Stadium was ready, the fumble game, and the Dave Brown years.

I am with them rain or shine but this last few years are starting to feel like the ship be sinking.

Maybe I should have said that the Knicks and Rangers appear to have finally figured out how to rebuild after years of chasing championships through expensive free agents. As for recent success it is ridiculous for you to compare the Rangers and the Knicks. The Knicks have consistently been an embarrassment. The Rangers have not.
A bit depressed??
djm : 10/21/2018 6:34 pm : link
I’m fucking miserable about the giants. And the misery has trickled into my overall feelings with the nfl in general.

Matter of fact, I’ve never been more miserable about the giants state of affairs in my entire life as a fan. Last year was rough but this might feel even worse. This team has to play better this year. Fuck draft positioning to some extent, this team has to win some games here.
i still get excited for each Giants game
markky : 10/21/2018 6:37 pm : link
and I'm excited at the draft we just had. 2 or 3 more like it and we'll be right there in the mix.

I haven't written off the new coaching staff yet. but if they suck this bad next year then they have to go and they probably will.

but what pisses me off is going to the supermarket and seeing all those knuckleheads in Patriots gear. unless you live in New England you have no idea.

Same here. My life is just fine but it’s in my blood too. I can’t help but be elated when the giants win big and pissed off when they lose. Can’t help it. Every other sport is different. It ain’t the giants.
This year's 1-5 is far worse than last years 1-5
NewBlue : 10/21/2018 6:42 pm : link
We had injuries. We had a coaching staff on the way out, we had zero running game to balance off the offense.

This year we have OBJ and Barkley
We have a coach who as a coordinator with a half=assed QB last year lit it up, we retooled the OL, and we have been relativity healthy.

This year is scary bad.

Bold Ruler : Mod : 10/21/2018 7:04 pm : link
Years of bad players, bad coaches, bad management. I really don't know what the cause is...but we've entered a second wilderness and are arguably the worst team in football. Again. I'm excited to watch Saquon. I wish Odell could get the ball more. But at the end of the day, do I really think DG and Shurmer are the answer? I don't know. DG had a good draft but also felt the team could win now with Eli which seems in hindsight to be a catastrophically bad decision. I think the Giants need a miracle to find a bellweather coach/GM. But Mara is too loyal to poor performing people for that to ever happen. I'm really worried things aren't going to change for quite a while.

draft and off-season excitement, then most often disappointment.

I get the interest interest in the off season, but never expect too much. Then I prefer to watch the season with low expectations, and have them surprise me if things go well. If things go crappy like this year and last, I just spend less time and energy on the Giants and look for good plays and solid young players.

Now the lean years during the 70s? I was a Giant fan then but was just a kid. Now, I am not sure I'd last through a decade of this. I'd just stop caring. I can tolerate a lot but there has to be a positive trajectory.

I was right behind you with my dad 1956-1986 in between 30 years of desolation and the Yankees were horrible most of those years remember it well bud .......I’ll still watch the Gmen every Sunday win or lose but must admit this is the hardest it’s ever been .......
The Mara’s had a chance
arniefez : 10/22/2018 7:57 am : link
To move the organization forward and catch up to the rest of the NFL. To create some excitement for the fan base and move to the next era of Giants football.

But they went full Mara. They hired a dinosaur GM from their tiny circle of trust and a low energy uninspiring safe failed former HC who has been completely over matched so far.

Pretty much everything that has happened after is reminiscent of the Bill Arnsparger Andy Robustelli era from the mid 1970’s. If you’re old enough you’ve seen this show before but there’s no Pete Rozelle coming to save us.

No wonder the OP is depressed.

Spot on, it's very difficult to build around the shiny things when there is no foundation. The giants are bad on both lines OL and DL, they can't rush the passer and can't protect the passer. As for running game sure SB is great at times but they can't run it consistently or when they NEED to, this is a recipe for disaster in today's NFL!

aimrocky : 10/22/2018 10:05 am : link
how much leash does a Super Bowl win provide? We're the perfect example of how much it buys a fan base. For me, I was finally fed up last year, so 6 years. Even though the tailspin started well before last season, I was always willing to be patient, thinking a few tweaks would raise or level of play. Boy, was that wrong...

I'm tired of our seasons ending before Halloween, and as a season ticket holder with two young kids, spending 3 hours commuting to see a shitty product is starting to wear me down. They've become a boring product.
