Anyone else feel a bit depressed about football

NewBlue : 10/21/2018 12:12 pm
It is so early in the year and I just don't have anything to root for. We are such a nightmare and now I could not care less about Dallas Vs Washington, or what Philly does, have to root for 1 win teams to win more so we get the first pick? Not enough get get me to watch games.
The Giants are too important to me, Sundays in the fall are like vacation days for me, but this vacation is hideous.

So now Sundays are with the wife going to the movies?
Even wifey got used to doing other things during Giants games

The Giants have been bad for a pretty long time now. This has pretty much been the drill every year since 2012 with 2016 being the outlier.

I got over it a while ago. I still watch other games and enjoy football. Nothing I can do about it.
Definitely Giants are one big f-ing bummer...

...but my local high school football team is serving up Grade A games, which are quite enjoyable.

It's really nice to see excellence.

Maybe the Giants should take a seat in my high school bleachers to see how winners play the game.

Couldn't hurt.

Last year was harder for me because it was a surprise. I never expected a 3-13 year after 11-5. I thought the Giants were going to at least be in the mix again.

This year I expected them to be bad. So, this isn't surprising at all.

And this offense. I realize we're currently a hopeless discombobulated assclown team with Eli and WCO roster and coach. Shurmur seems to be a big problem too, can't adapt like Reid or Bellingham or other great coaches, but if he gets his QB, his system might work.
2 straight horrendous shitfest from them

where the leaves haven't fully changed and seasons over, ruin the NFL season these past 2 years.

Watching other things instead unless you like a sad comedy relief each week now..except next week lol

Since Goodell turned the NFL in Arena Football without defenses. Changes for player safety are fine, but when Al Michaels declares last Sunday night's 43 - 40 game a "great game", we can see how far the NFL has declined.

There is not a single player on the Giants defense I truly enjoy watching (Snacks gets an honorable mention and Collins has his moments).

Right now, I'm just rooting for Barkley.

Sundays are still all about football for me? But it's not "law" anymore. The "do you feel like doing" or the "can we go" questions are most likely answered with "sure".

I grew up watching lousy Giant seasons, just about all of them, it doesn't get better or easier to watch.
Last season was a big disappointment
idinkido : 10/21/2018 12:36 pm : link
Knew OL could not be fixed in just one season and expected it would take one or two seasons more. In terms of Eli being ineffective, No Kidding! Eli needs an effective OL that can protect the QB and make the running game work consistently. Do like Gettleman and like Shurmur, too.
Nope

I'll be honest: I didn't know what to expect this year

after last year, but I didn't see this year being quite this bad.

This team is helpless and pathetic, and unable to use their star and good players to any meaningful advantage.

It's like watching water trying to go uphill.

Depressed may describe it. I have this inescapable feeling of doom hanging over me.
I've been really enjoying football Saturdays

I've become a follower of the Army Black Knights since 2010 - after losing my Giants season tickets I go to West Point once a year.

I love Army's style of football, running the triple option is a real treat for those who are starved for old school football. They have been a solid team the past three years and they are a fun team to root for.

Aside from the Giants being a tremendous disappointment 5 of the past 6 years, NFL football is in serious decline. Even in bad years for the Giants I'd always watch other games, I never cared who was playing. Now some weekends I only watch the Giants. I hate primetime games, I strongly prefer the 1:00 and 4:00 time slots. I keep the Jets or Patriots on in the background (I live in CT) while I do other things.
I miss
NewBlue : 10/21/2018 12:46 pm : link
The buzz of the Saturday night anticipating game day Sunday, and wakeing up Sunday morning going about my errands knowing that there are 5-4-3- hours left to kickoff, I miss the nervous energy of pregame and the game itself, I miss the inevitable dreadful game thread here...and the coaches excuse...I mean press conference after the game......
Just a chance, slight though it may be that they can pull one out and start a streak.....All that is gone until next year

It was nice to have a player on D that was enjoyable to watch, like Strahan or Armstead flying all over the field always around the ball completely exerting his will on a game.
I'm not that bummed

like a lot of people on this board, I was pretty sure this would be a crappy season and I prepared myself psychologically for a wasted autumn.

Now I've decided to watch games for the sake of trying to figure out what the Giants can do to improve their roster and game plan in coming years, and while that's not exactly fun or even terribly satisfying, it is a lot more interesting than I thought it would be.
Get excited about

The Knicks. They are a scrappy little team. These young players develope, Porzingis come back okay, and with the money they will have for FA, they could actually be pretty decent next year. They gave Boston everything they could handle last night with no Porzingis.

Back in the 80's when I was in my 20's, the result of the Giants game would determine if I was gonna be in a good or bad mood that week. I lived for Sunday afternoons.

Now, in my 50's, I get over losses in a matter of hours (sometimes minutes) instead of days. Somewhere along the line I came to realize that its really just entertainment, a game being played by a bunch of guys who I will never know, who have no real impact on my friends or families lives. There is enough else going on in the world to worry about rather than whether my favorite football teams wins or not. Plus, its not like we can control whats happening out there...if I had the power to change what is happening, well, then that would be worth worrying about. Unfortunately, all we can do is observe.
Not now.

Once they lost their 4th game, I accepted the fact that they aren't going to be good this year. It doesn't bother me much now because I don't expect them to win many games.
No, but if it was five or ten years ago I would.

I lead a pretty full life, but the Giants are entwined in this life as some kind of family, my loved ones know the significance they have on my moods and attitude.
I will still go about my business although with a disappointing twinge in my gut.

I can't watch it unless I have fantasy reasons.
NyquistX3 : 10/21/2018 1:41 pm : link
The current product is so bad it's gross. The constant bombardment of commercials is the equivalent of the league taking a dump on its fans and rule changes is making the quality of play really poor.

Dispassionate.. im a Giants fan.. been one for since i was a child, since the days of Spider Lockhardt who was my favorite player when i was a young'un..

Football is a sport. I watch it. I enjoy it.It just doesnt influence my mood or attitudes anymore. Sure I enjoy a win. And Superbowls are ever better..

Buy since my son was born 8 years ago, Ive gained a healthier perspective about the place of sports in my life, If he wants to sit with daddy and watch Kung Fu Panda football will wait.

Is the realization that this disaster is likely to continue for years. No confidence in Mara, DG or this coach. Knicks finally figured out how to rebuild through youth. Rangers the same. Yankees did it a few years ago. I would rather watch any of those teams than the Giants.
It's not just the Giants.

The whole NFL sucks. It's fucking volleyball now. Goodell sucks. Tagliabue sucked. The whiney over-paid players suck for the most part. The television coverage sucks. You can see all of this in the stands and in the boob tube ratings.

I used to watch three NFL games a week, four games a week when possible. Now I don't watch any. The NFL has basically lost me as a fan.

Yeah cause the Giants never have won anything in the last 20 years and Giant fans have it soooo bad. Save me your gloom and doom grief. Other sports fans have it way worse and never have seen their team win a championship. Have fun with your high school team. I don't think Barkley has to sit in their b!eachers to learn how to win football games. Ugh.

I don't take it as serious as I use too although you wouldn't know it when i am bitching at the TV .
The part that get's me the most is how JR just wasted so
many picks and fail miserably to keep the trenches solid he
ended up overpaying for defenders .and not having any success developing players . LB's O-line players TE's ect
Eli should have had a line to play behind so he last six
years were just a waste of his career .
NFL in general is sloppy the rule changes have taken the fun out of the game .
It's been forever since this team dominated a game from start to finish The Eli magic is no longer but it's gonna be sad when the end happens
Red Dog, I agree. It is the Giants only for me. Many of today's fans
carpoon : 10/21/2018 3:26 pm : link
couldn't have handled our team of the late'60's and the '70's. There are more front-runner fans today that just can't handle adversity. The fans that hung with the Giants through that era were truly dedicated fans.

The Knicks were a dumpster fire for over a decade. Don't dare tell me they know how to rebuild now. Where are the Rangers and Knicks recent championships? The Giants have more championships in the last 15 years than the Yankees.

This place is getting WFAN level caller dumb.

Front runners or fair-weather fans just disappear, I, like you and most on this board will watch every game regardless of how pathetic they are, I went through the garbage years before Parcells. My dad took me to the Yankee Stadium years with the likes of Norm Snead, Randy Johnson, I went up to Yale Bowl for a few years to follow those turkey teams that never won anything, to Shea Stadium for a year until Giants Stadium was ready, the fumble game, and the Dave Brown years.

I am with them rain or shine but this last few years are starting to feel like the ship be sinking.
