Coughlin's Jag's melting down in Locker Room

BigBlueDownTheShore : 10/21/2018 4:46 pm
Is Tom to blame for the toxic team environment he created, or do the apologists give him a pass for this as well?

Jags just briefly opened up the doors to the locker room before shutting them. Calais Campbell was holding back Yannick Ngakoue, who threw off Campbell. Lots of yelling coming from the room.

We were just told we could go into the Jaguars locker room. Then as the doors opened and we waited, we could see and hear clearing a very heated agreement going on with players in the locker room. We were told to come back out and wait.

Here’s the bottom line (and I think the point of this thread)

Reese, Coughlin and Eli all had a hand in our two glorious championships.

They also had a hand in our decline since, albeit to varying extents (Eli more of late - not so much 2012-2016).

Several posters were acting like Coughlin earned some sort of lifetime appointment as HC here. He didn’t. Frankly, we let him go 1-2 years too late. He was a bad coach his last year here (shockingly bad in-game coaching). He was a big part of our championship runs (as were Reese and Eli) and deserves credit for that. But he was also a part of our decline (as were Reese and now Eli).

It's one thing to point out the foolishness of over crediting Coughlin's involvement with the Jags last year. That doesn't explain or excuse the need to match the foolishness going the other way and taking a steamy dump on his legacy here.

It's come to people insinuating that Reese wasn't drafting all those years, it was "St. Tommy" with his hand shoved up Jerry's ass. And why are those people complaining? The firing happened in the order they wanted: offensive coordinator, head coach, and lastly the GM. The results have been stellar.

^^ nailed it.

Everyone got their panties in a twist when Coughlin was relieved ahead of Reese. In hindsight, they should have all been shown the door at the same time, but make no mistake - the guys who helped bring the championships weren't getting the job done anymore, and had to go.

It's possible to be grateful for what they did, while at the same time thinking it was the right time to move on. Same with Eli now - thinking it's time to move on doesn't in some way diminish his legacy here. All good things come to an end, unfortunately.

If we give Tom all the credit for last years turn around of the Jags, like many have on here, he is responsible for the acquisition of the group of people that are in that locker room.

So if he gets all the credit, then shouldn't he be responsible for when his team falls apart at the seems?

Nice try back peddling. The intent of your OP was NOT about him getting credit in the past. You called out TC apologists and asked if they could ignore this incident too.

I dont even know where you get that from. I read all of the posts and I cannot even remember any substantial number of people here even talking much about Coughlin's job in Jax. There are a few thousand people posting in this forum. Maybe 2 or 3 people have a love affair with Coughlin?

Here, about every other post in this thread is praising Coughlin for the Jacksonville turnaround.

This sums it up perfectly, TD.

There are certain people around here who have always had an overinflated regard for Tom Coughlin because he did things the "right way". Nonsense like strict controls on sock height and "if you're not five minutes early, you're late" gives them a warm and fuzzy feeling inside despite the evidence that these things were most likely counterproductive. The legacy of the Tom Coughlin Giants isn't really precise, disciplined play, but rather a lot of sloppy and disorganized football.

I disagree. Coughlin changed the culture of the Giants for the better. Think about the decade and a half of sloppy and disorganized football that preceded him.

They started either 5-2 or 6-2 every single season he was here until 2012. They were prepared for the season every year. Yeah, the second halves were inconsistent, but that happens. They were very rarely completely unprepared to play a game. Yeah, there were some odd blowouts sprinkled in, but they were almost always prepared.

Yeah, but that's a double edged sword, and to an extent, seems to be both TC's and Eli's undoing.

When you start 0-6 and finish 7-3, half of the opinions center around 'wow, what a comeback' and the other half around 'hey, how the hell do you lose 6 straight with a team that finishes up the season with 7 wins?'.

Same as Eli, with some stinker performances mixed in with some gems. Inconsistency isn't looked upon positively.

I give him some of the blame and admitted it was time for him to go when he "resigned". However, I maintain that letting Coughlin go without also firing Reese when the owner himself said the biggest problem was personnel is what made the situation a joke. For me, that was a very important part of a terrible downward spiral, which we are still embroiled in. That set us back a couple of years at least.
I don't get anyone's fascination with the Jags.

I really loved Coughlin and was advocating for keeping him a couple of years longer than a lot here. As I just stated above, though, when he left it was definitely time. Now, he is no longer part of the Giants organization, so I don't have a fascination with his every move with the Jaguars, especially since he is in a completely different role with them. It brings me no more or less joy to see them having issues. The Giants went from a premier organization in the NFL to a complete joke o the span of a few years.
