My son is 6 and our next door neighbor is 9, apparently they ended up playing Fortnite today at the neighbor's house. Not a super big deal and I'm not against violent video games (he's going to eventually play) but isn't 6 a bit young? Also my son can be pretty addicted to his ipad currently, do I really want to give him another game to be addicted to?
Option A - do you call the neighbor's parents and ask when your son is there to play other video games (just not Fortnite)
Option B - do you just limit your son's ability to go over to the neighbors?
God, I'm 28 and I feel like I'm 80
I think 8/10 is fine for fortnite.
I'm not sure if you're familiar with the game or not. But if not I suggest check it out, very cartoonish, not like GTA or some of the other "shooter" games. guns and violence yes, but I would let my 8 year old play for the few minutes a day she got screen/device time.
I'd be worried more about the open chat than the game itself and you could have the open chat with many other games, I believe, that you ever think are age appropriate.
I'd be more concerned with the other players who you don't know in the game. Plenty of opportunities to get mommy and daddy's CC info from junior.
Kids are just shitty to each other when playing this game. And every parent I talk to says the same thing. They scream and yell at each other. Gang up on kids. Shun kids or purposely kick them out of games. It just turns into another form of shitty social media. I can’t wait for this Fortnite fad to end.

Yup.

I'm with you here, 100%
Hey man, if you ask your kid about his school day and you get more than “good” or “nuthin much” then you are way ahead of the game LOL. But the floss stuff is funny. Kids are a trip.
Last week he was playing goalie in his soccer game and I lookover and he's doing the floss and then just transitioned into the hype (I think that's what it's called)
Uggghhh...same.
“Just 10 more minutes” easily turns into 45 minutes.
Perhaps, but this is worse than most, and I've experienced a lot. Plus it likely provides a model for tuning into the reward centers of kids, so in that I agree with you.

I have a 14 year old son and he’s been big into it for a while. Fortunately, he’d rather be out with his friends more than playing video games but every damn kid is addicted to this game. So finding kids that actually want to go of their house can be tough.

The hate, racism, misogyny, threats and worse have been going on with internet gaming for years my kids tell me.
At his age, most of his friends are playing. He's too young to be at other kids houses playing unsupervised, so I can't be much help there. I agree, though, I can't wait until the world moves onto something else (even though I play once in a while).

So ... it's like the 70s ... before the Internet, online games and social media. :)

Lol, I suppose so.
The only difference is that (much like the rest of social media) it’s really easy for kids to act like douches from behind the comfort of their screen in their parents basement. You should be able to handle that as an adult but it just sucks for young kids.
And as a parent we actually get to see it/listen to it day in and day out.
Then six months ago, they just stopped.
Don't exactly know why. The game used to be 50 v 50 or solo. When they added additonal choices, 20 x 5 and such, they never got into them. And these days there are so mnay entertainment choices, they just moved on.
The game itself is tame compared to COD or Battlefield. What bothers me more is the interactions with other players online. It's just another avenue of bullying and shitty behavior.
1)The risk for a young kid is managing the amount of gaming. I didn't let my son game online with others until he was 13. By then, he fully understood the demands of school and chores. A six year old will not have an easy time with this.
2)There's also the risk of online gamers. There's a lot of assholes and scammers and a six year old is not prepared to deal with either. You'd have to really lock down the settings to protect him from that.
3) The game is a money pit, despite being "free". My son has dumped a lot of birthday money, allowance, etc into buying dumb shit for this game.
That said, the game is fun. I've played it with him and he thinks it's hilarious how bad I am at it. I can't build for shit. It's a pretty cool game mechanism and my brain just cant do it.
My son's 5 and we've managed to keep him completely ignorant of it, though our neighbor's kid was pretty snotty when we wouldn't let him install it on our Playstation.
