"What if" question for the draft experts re: Barkley

DC Gmen Fan : 10/22/2018 11:14 am
Hypothetically speaking, looking back, if the Browns pulled a fast one and drafted Barkley (or another team traded up to the #1 spot and took him) who would the Giants most likely have drafted? Would they have then gone with a QB or would they go OL/DL?
Haven't we done this a billion

Guess I wasn't paying attention
DC Gmen Fan : 10/22/2018 11:30 am : link
what's once more?
It's been reported that Chubb most likely would have been the pick,
Keith : 10/22/2018 11:30 am : link
but they did like Darnold.

I don't think so, this is a different flavor.

I'm not sure we'd ever know - we have no idea how they had Mayfield and the other QBs rated comparatively. We know (and suspected then) that they loved Barkley, but not much on the rest of the field.
I think
Joey in VA : 10/22/2018 11:31 am : link
They end up trading out of the spot honestly, at least to 3 so the Jets don't lose Darnold. I don't think they would have stayed at 2 if he went 1.

Interesting...what would the price have been?
Brilliant question
OnTap : 10/22/2018 11:35 am : link
If a top QB pick fell in their lap, and SB wasn't available, this season may already look a whole lot different right now.
Well, with Barkley on the board we were offered hot dogs and donuts
jcn56 : 10/22/2018 11:35 am : link
so, without him, maybe some french toast or a chicken burger?
I don't think they'd have taken Darnold
Go Terps : 10/22/2018 11:50 am : link
That would have upset the plan to go forward with Eli. Conversely had Eli retired after last season I'm certain they would have taken Darnold over Barkley.

I'm guessing they'd have gone with Chubb.
Didn't JonC say it would have been Chubb?
bradshaw44 : 10/22/2018 11:51 am : link
?
...
JonC : 10/22/2018 12:14 pm : link
they would've picked Chubb unless an on the clock trade down option popped up.
How would BBI have reacted
DC Gmen Fan : 10/22/2018 12:21 pm : link
if we did take Chubb? Is it a "sexy" move?
Implosion.
Keith : 10/22/2018 12:22 pm : link
Half of bbi was QB or bust. Out of the remaining half, half of them were SB or bust. Out of the remaining half of them, it was QB or SB or bust. BBI would have imploded if we went with a DE, IMO.
The funny thing is....
dep026 : 10/22/2018 12:26 pm : link
We could have easily needed Darnold.
We could have easily needed Chubb.
We could have easily needed McGlitchney.
We could have easily needed Nelson.

And Barkley was a need too.

Shit, no wonder why we suck.

And would likely be already injured like Rosen and Allen.

I agree and I was just kidding. I like to focus on the development of our young players. It's an absolute thrill to watch Barkley, and I'm happy with how BJ Hill, Hernandez and Carter are coming along. Would love to see Engram have a big game tonight. And for me I still feel extremely fortunate that we get to see #13 play for us on a weekly basis.

BBi is gonna be in for an implosion when we dont draft herbert. But if we can get an edge rusher in round 1, and a RT in round 2 - we are heading into the right direction.
Yep, there's plenty of good going on despite the losing
JonC : 10/22/2018 12:52 pm : link
Building blocks that take time to develop are happening, and they've ripped up about 60% of the roster so far.

If Herbert doesn't declare, then it is what it is. The QB will surface when the time is right.

UFA before the draft, could well go after the RT then as well as a player such as Markus Golden, and cut OV loose.
QB is a huge need
UberAlias : 10/22/2018 1:46 pm : link
But among other huge needs. If they can add another difference maker, preferably at QB, Edge, or OT, it will be a huge step in the right direction. Considering the roster, I'll settle for blue chip talent wherever they can get it.
There are so many needs on this team
Mike from Ohio : 10/22/2018 2:53 pm : link
that there really is no wrong draft answer for next year, outside of the usual kicker/punter and now probably RB. But that won't stop the amateur draft sleuths from identifying their #1 prospect and assuming not drafting that person shows incompetence or some other nefarious plan.
If Herbert decides to go back to school
Jay on the Island : 10/22/2018 7:58 pm : link
Then the Giants will be left with a tough choice. Do they take a stud pass rusher which is another huge need or do they trade down and accumulate picks in 2020 as ammunition to trade up if they have to in order to select a QB.

That's what I have been suggesting. Bring in young building block free agents like they did when they signed Kareem McKenzie, Plaxico Burress, and Antonio Pierce. Instead sign Donovan Smith for RT, Mitch Morse for C, and Markus Golden. Sign a cheap stopgap to compete with Lauletta for the starting job and go all in for a QB in the 2020 draft.
