Giants on 10-22

10-22-1927 Giants 13 Frankford 0

Schmidt BBI:

“The infusion of relative youth and tangible athleticism was appreciably noticed during a home-and-home weekend against the defending-champion Yellow Jackets. As was their custom, Frankford played their home games on Saturday as Sunday spectacles were prohibited by local blue laws. Often they would follow up a Saturday game at Frankford Stadium with an away game against the same team on Sunday. The rushing game was greatly improved, as the Philadelphia press cited Haines for “having an outstanding game” for New York in their 13-0 victory.”

“It was a tough weekend for the Frankford Yellowjackets as the New York Giants bumped them twice. The Giants took Saturday's game by a 13 to 0 count and emerged victorious in Sunday's combat to the tune of 27 to 0...The Yellowjacket rooters opened the eyes of Gotham on Sunday when they marched into the Polo Grounds about 2,500 strong. The Frankford contingent looked like a college crowd with a band, cheerleaders and everything.”

https://www.bigblueinteractive.com/2014/06/15/1927-new-york-football-giants/

10-22-1933 Giants 21 Brooklyn 7

Schmidt BBI:

“The Giants entertained the Dodgers the next week in an inter-borough battle that drew an exuberant 35,000 spectators to the Polo Grounds. Brooklyn featured familiar names to fans of the Giants: Benny Friedman, along with newcomers Chris Cagle and John “Shipwreck” Kelly, who left New York after the 1932 season and acquired a percentage of the Dodgers franchise. Newman again drew praise for his deft passing against Brooklyn’s durable defense, which came into this game off a shut out versus Cincinnati.
A unique play occurred in the second quarter with New York ahead 7-0. Newman punted to the irascible Kelly, who surprisingly punted the ball right back to Newman, giving the Giants a new possession with a net loss of one yard. The Giants lead 14-0 at the half, and after leading another touchdown drive, Newman was given star treatment and was taken out to a standing ovation. Owen sent in Richards to finish the game at tailback. Friedman got the Dodgers on the scoreboard late with a fourth quarter touchdown pass. Brooklyn successfully completed an on-sides kick, but the Giants defense held and the final score was 21-7. After bolstering their record to 4-2, good for first place in the Eastern Division, the Giants boarded the train to Washington for a mid-week exhibition match before heading to the mid-West to meet a familiar foe with a new look.”

https://www.bigblueinteractive.com/2015/03/02/missing-rings-1933-new-york-football-giants/

10-22-1939 Giants 16 Chicago Bears 13

PFR:

“The Giants beat four lesser opponents and proved their strength by edging the Bears 16-13 before 58,963 fans in the Polo Grounds on October 22. The Giants took a 16-0 lead on Len Barnum’s 13-yard touchdown run and Ward Cuff’s three field goals. Sid Luckman started the game at halfback for the Bears, moved to quarterback in place of Bernie Masterson, and threw his first NFL touchdown pass to Dick Plasman midway through the fourth quarter.”

10-22-1944 Giants 23 Chicago Cards/Pittsburgh Steelers 0

PFR:

“In the wake of the off-field chaos, Card-Pitt headed to the Polo Grounds to meet the Giants, whom they had defeated in an exhibition game just three weeks earlier. It was a good game for a while. In the words of the Pittsburgh Press, “For one quarter and almost one half, [Card-Pitt] looked like professionals.” At the half, the Giants led 9-0, thanks to a safety on (what else?) a blocked punt, and a touchdown run by defending NFL rushing champion Bill Paschal. Card-Pitt threatened in the second quarter when Coley McDonough, making a cameo appearance while on furlough from the army, led the offense to the New York five-yard line. But the Giants’ Ward Cuff dashed those hopes when he intercepted a McDonough pass in the end zone. New York salted it away in the third quarter, recovering a Bernie Semes fumble at the Card-Pitt four and scoring on another Paschal scamper. Twice in the second half, Card-Pitt got inside the Giant 35, but they could move no further. The final was 23-0, as Card-Pitt fell to 0-4.”

10-22-1950 Giants 17 Cleveland 13

Pass Tidwell 9-2-17-0-1
Pass Conerly 3-0-0-0-0
Rush Scott 16-121-1
Rush Price 13-68-0

Schmidt BBI:

“The teams met for a rematch in front of 41,734 enthusiastic fans at the Polo Grounds three weeks later. The 4-1 Browns punctured the 4-1 Giants’ Umbrella with 13 second-quarter points. The final seven came seconds before the half following a major mental error by New York return-man Jim Ostendarp. On the kickoff following a Lou Groza field goal, Ostendarp let the ball hit the ground and roll to the one-yard line, where Cleveland recovered. Graham plunged for the touchdown on the next play to increase Cleveland’s lead to 13-3.
Owen altered his defensive strategy for the second half after Weinmeister left the game with a knee injury. Instead of having the ends drop off in the Umbrella they rushed Graham relentlessly. Poole and DeRogatis harassed Graham, who completed just four passes and lost 71 yards in sacks over the final 30 minutes. Cleveland crossed midfield just once. The Giants’ offense completed the comeback on a bit of razzle-dazzle when quarterback Charlie Conerly faked a hand-off to Eddie Price and flipped the ball behind his back to Joe Scott who raced around end for an uncontested touchdown and a 17-13 win.
Weinmeister boasted after the game, “We were smarter and better. We proved that defense was more important than offense. A lot of people thought the first win was a fluke. We knew it wasn’t and we were determined to prove it to everybody else.”

AP: “Old man Chuck Conerly, shunted to the bench recently by Y. A. Tittle, bounced back with two touch down passes in the last quarter Sunday and gave the New York Giants a 24-14 comeback victory over Los Angeles. Conerly, 40-year-old veteran of 14 seasons of pro ball, brought the Giants from behind before a roaring crowd of 63,053 at Yankee stadium. A Giant 10 0 lead in the first half disappeared when the Rams scored twice in the third period for a 14 10 edge. Conerly didn’t appear in the game until the Rams had taken the lead. The former Mississippi star hit Kyle Rote in the end zone with a 10 yard pass to give the Giants the lead at 3:33 of the final period. After Jimmy Patton intercept of a Jon Arnett pass, Conerly again hit his target with another TD pass, this one a 37 yard beauty to Del Shofner, an ex Ram, in the end zone. Pat Summerall added the three extra points, and also kicked a 22 yard field goal for the game's first score in the first period. Alex Webster, a first half flash until injured in the third period, scored on a 59 yard pass play from Tittle in the second period. The Rams, losers of four of their first five league games. suddenly came alive in the third period. Quarterback Frank Ryon, who played most of the game connected with Jim Phillips for a 35 yard scoring play. Late in the third period Dick Bass excited the big throng with a zigzag touchdown dash of 53 yards, reversing his field after he appeared trapped and then slicing through the entire Giant defense.”

SI.com: A RUMOR IS SCOTCHED AND A STARR REVIVED

“If Starr showed courage, so did the Giants. After last year's slump, New York has rebuilt into a club that led the league in offense through five games. A good measure of how interesting the team has become is the number of people drawn to the rooftops beyond the outfield fence of Yankee Stadium. Sunday they were full again, the sunlight striking off the spectators' binoculars and telescopes as they peered down at the field. Even the suburban motels outside the TV blackout range reported a return of the football-watching parties that were common when Y. A. Tittle and the Giants were winning championships.
Quarterback Fran Tarkenton directs an offense that is liable to move quickly in any direction, including backward. The Packer defense had allowed five opponents an average of 30 yards per game passing, and very little more rushing, but the Giants went at it in the first quarter as if they did not believe the figures. With both Green Bay corner backs playing loose and eight yards deep, Tarkenton threw for Aaron Thomas and the ball bounced into the hands of Packer Safety Willie Wood. That was a switch. Luck of that sort had often gone against the Packers in their first five games. Green Bay moved down to the eight, where Starr had to run with the ball, and the New York tacklers gave him a thoroughly bruising test. Then Elijah Pitts scored on a sweep.
But the Giants came back, running the ball on Green Bay as few teams have been able to do. Tarkenton let Tucker Frederickson and Ernie Koy, New York's two big young backs who were hurt last year but this season have been running with speed and power, take turns smashing at the line. On a third-down play, Tarkenton scrambled and passed for 19 yards to his split end, Homer Jones, who is not much help when he does not have the ball but is very dangerous when he does. Moments later Frederickson went deep, luring away a couple of defensive backs. Jones delayed, ran a slant and caught a 22-yard touchdown pass. The Giants then got a 14-7 lead on an 18-yard pass to Joe Morrison with 1:11 left in the half, and all the questions about Green Bay sounded loud and clear.

And that is when the Packers became a championship team again. In those 71 seconds Starr, watching the clock, used three running plays and one pass to drive Green Bay to the Giant 14. The clock showed seven seconds. Time for a field goal? Not yet. Starr passed to Boyd Dowler in the end zone. Incomplete. Still two seconds to go. Plenty of time. Out came Don Chandler for the field goal, and Green Bay went into intermission behind 14-10.
"The big thing for us was that last drive in the first half," said Lombardi. "We looked better than we have all year. We almost made the touchdown, and we knew if we missed the pass wouldn't take more than five seconds."
"I thought when we scored just before the half the momentum would be ours," said Giants Coach Allie Sherman. "Instead it was theirs."
In the third quarter the Packers, with the help of an interference penalty, rumbled off on a 63-yard drive, most of it on the famed Green Bay power sweep, with either Pitts or Jim Grabowski carrying the ball. It was a chalk drive, with the sweeps working just as Lombardi draws them on the board, 14 yards on one side, nine more, then another six on the other. Pitts scored on a sweep from the six. The second interception by Linebacker Dave Robinson set up a field goal. The Packers increased their lead to 27-14 early in the fourth quarter on Starr's passing and a one-yard run by Pitts, who later threw a pass off the sweep to get near enough for a two-yard touchdown run by Grabowski and a 34-14 lead...”

NYT: “Trailing by 21 7 at intermission because they yielded two touchdowns in the last 65 seconds, the New York Giants took command in the second half anti defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 27 21, at Yankee Stadium yesterday for their, fourth straight victory.
The defensive unit, usually given second billing to the offense, and Pete Gogolak, the placekicker who has been having his troubles the last two years, emerged as the heroes.

The defense set up the tying touchdowns in a 67 second span early in the third quarter, and Gogolak kicked field goals of 16 and 43 yards in the final period. The long one was the important one, since it forced St. Louis to try for a touchdown instead of a field goal clown the stretch.

A Smothering Defense
By that time Pat Hughes's recovery of Donny Anderson's fumble on the Cardinal 19 yard line and Spider Lockhart's 29 ;yard touchdown run on an interception had brought the Giants even, and Giant defenders completely smothered the Cardinals for the rest of the game. They yielded only three first downs and a net of 16 yards in the second half, and sacked Jim Hart, the Cardinal passer, three times.
Actually the Giants might have dominated the first half, too, if three possible interceptions hadn't been dropped by Pete Athas and Ron Hornsby. The offense, having difficulty in solving some unusual Cardinal defenses in the first half, did some pass dropping, too.

But with Ron Johnson gaining 76 yards rushing and 69 on four passes (mostly screens) and with Norm Snead connect ing 15 times for 209 yards on 26 passes, the offense did its job. Its newest aspect was the rediscovery of Bob Tucker, who caught six passes and shed enough tacklers to gain 86 yards.

As in last week's upset victory at San Francisco, the most important values from the Giants', point of view were emotional. They weren't as sharp as in previous games and were a perfect target for an upset. But they managed to rouse themselves after having fallen behind, and left Coach —Alex Webster talking proudly again about “character,” which really means “keep trying.”

Now they will take a 4 won and 2 lost record into next week's game against Washington, tied for second place and only one game behind the Eastern Division leader, and they consider themselves a contender.

Contenders, they know, have to win the kind of game they won yesterday, in which their playing was far from perfect.
That the Giants were “flat” was clear enough in the first half. Athas muffed an interoption on the Cardinal 35, and after a punt a Giant drive stalled on the Cardinal 38 When Charlie Evans and Tucker dropped passes. Gogolak tried a 45 yard field goal, but was wide to the right.

The Cardinals went 50 yards for a touchdown early in the second perior, scoring on Hart's pass to Anderson from 8 yards out. But the Giants matched that with an 80 yard march ending in a 1 yard plunge by Evans.
With 4:35 to go in the half, Jeff Staggs intercepted a Snead pass, and returned it to the Cardinal 37. Hart hit three straight passes to the Giant 25, and Hornsby couldn't hold an interception on the Giant 10 so the Cards continued for a score. John Roland fought his way over from the 5.

Trying to get that score back right away, the Giants attempted three long passes one underthrown, one dropped and one caught out of bounds. So Tom Blanchard had to punt and Conrad Dobler blocked it. The Cards’ started on the Giant 8 with 28 seconds left. Hart passed to Roland to the 1, and on the next play Roland bucked over.

The turnabout began three minutes into the second half, when Hughes grabbed Anderson's fumble. On second down from the 16, Snead found Don Herrmann in the end zone with a pass.

Mel Gray's 34 yard kickoff return was reduced by a holding penalty, so the cards started on their 13, and got penalized back to the 9 two plays later. It was third and 14 when Hart threw into a crowd and this time Lockhart held the ball and used his blockers well for the trying touchdown.

The Cards started to move again, but Richmond Flowers intercepted a long pass on the Giant 16. Evans fumbled on the Giant 37, but the Giants forced a field goal attempt from the 19, and Jim Baaken was wide to the left.

That was the last break the Giants needed. They moved to the Cardinal 9 with a key 39 yard gain on a pass to Tucker, and Gogolak made the short field goal on fourth and 2.

Then they forced a punt and reached the Caidinal 36, where it was fourth and 2 again. This field goal was tough and needed, and Gogo made it. There was one final bit of excitement With third and an inch to go on the Cardinal 48 and 55 seconds to play, Evans fumbled and Larry Stallings recovered. A touchdown and an extra point could still win for St Louis, but Jack Gregory nailed Hart for a 10& #8208;yard loss and helped rush him on a pass for an incompletion on second down.

Giants quarterback Joe Pisarcik completed just three passes, but one of them was a 43-yard scoring strike to Jimmy Robinson and another was a 46-vard heave to James Thompson on a flea-flicker play that set up the Giants’ other TD, a three-yard run by Pisarcik.”

NYT: Sloppy Giants Hold On

“Just think how well the Giants might do if they eliminated a few basic errors.

Like Maurice Carthon bobbling a pass in the end zone and, on the next play, Odessa Turner letting a touchdown pass bounce off his chest. Like Jumbo Elliott getting penalized for holding, wiping out a touchdown pass from Phil Simms to Mark Bavaro. Like Carthon fumbling in the closing minutes and watching Vencie Glenn return the ball 81 yards for a touchdown, the longest fumble return in the San Diego Chargers' history.

But with the Giants' effectiveness on offense and defense today, those misdeeds merely kept the game from being a runaway. Near the end, the Giants opened the door for the Chargers, let them score a touchdown on that fumble, then stopped their final threat and won, 20-13.

One Game Ahead

The victory improved the Giants' record to 7-1. It kept them one game ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles and two ahead of the Washington Redskins in their National Football League division race. The Chargers fell to 2-5 and have last place in their division all to themselves.

The Giants suffered one major injury. Bavaro, their solid tight end, sprained his left knee in the third quarter when he caught a pass and was tackled from behind by Glenn, a Chargers free safety.

Coach Bill Parcells of the Giants said he did not know yet how long Bavaro would be out, although he did say, ''He won't require surgery, thank God.'' Simms said he was sure Bavaro would be out at least two weeks.

''When I tackled him,'' said Glenn, ''he said, 'There goes my knee.' You hate to see a guy go down like that.'' Moment of Disarray
''After he was hurt,'' Simms said, ''we were in disarray for a while, trying to figure where to put people.''

On the whole, the Giants did a good job on offense and defense putting people where they could do the most good. They built a 6-3 lead by halftime on Raul Allegre's field goals of 21 and 40 yards. In the second half, Ottis Anderson scored twice on 4-yard runs, once after an interception by Sheldon White.
Anderson's second touchdown gave the Giants a 20-6 lead with 6 minutes 30 seconds remaining in the game. Less than a minute later, when Lewis Tillman stuffed the Chargers' fake punt, the Giants took possession on the Chargers' 32-yard line. The Giants, trying to run out the clock, started feeding the ball to Anderson.

''If we get a field goal then,'' said Bart Oates, the Giants' center, ''it's 23-6 with two minutes left. What are they going to do? Instead, we let them back in.''

''We made a game out of it,'' Parcells said. A Two-Fold Hit
The play that made a game out of it started on the Giants' 17. Carthon took the ball, ran over left tackle and was hit by Billy Ray Smith, the Chargers' outside linebacker.
''When he hit me,'' Carthon said, ''he happened to hit the ball, too.''
The ball popped loose. Glenn picked it up and ran untouched for a Chargers touchdown.

''It was a bad feeling,'' Carthon said.
Simms said he was not discouraged.
''We were going to get the ball again,'' he said, ''and they still had to score another touchdown. They're the ones who had to do the sweating, not us.''

The Giants did get the ball again, but they had to punt. With two minutes left, the Chargers took over on their 40.
All day long, the Giants' defense had shut down Jim McMahon, an old nemesis when he was the quarterback for the Chicago Bears. The Chargers kept in seven blockers to protect McMahon, and he was still throwing quickly to escape the pressure. Rushing the Play
''McMahon just didn't want to get hit,'' said Leonard Marshall, the Giants' defensive end. ''He was rushing to get rid of the ball.''
This time, the Giants and McMahon's teammates combined to put him away. James FitzPatrick, an inexperienced tackle trying to contain Lawrence Taylor, was penalized 5 yards for illegal motion. On the next play, Broderick Thompson was penalized 5 yards for a false start. On the next play, Erik Howard pulled down McMahon for the Giants' only sack of the day.
''I flushed him out of the pocket,'' Howard said. ''Someone was coming from the left, so he came back to me. He had nowhere to go.'' Now, with 88 seconds remaining, the Chargers were back on their 25. They faced third down, with 25 yards to go for a first down.
To the groans of the crowd of 48,566 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium, McMahon overthrew the dangerous Anthony Miller on third down and Wayne Walker on fourth down. The Giants, 5-point favorites, were home free.”

NYP: GIANTS DOMINATE, THEN ARE DEFLATED

“The Giants last night played a strange game, dominating on the field for prolonged stretches while struggling to pull away on the scoreboard. In the end, their repeated offensive failures caught up with them and they blew a game that should have never gotten away.
The Giants lost, 10-9, to the Eagles in a game at the Meadowlands that will sicken the home team for weeks to come. Rarely has a team been so overwhelmingly powerful as the Giants were in the first half. Yet they could never build a decent lead and they paid a heavy price for their lousy offensive performance.
“Very disappointed,” a glum Jim Fassel said. “Very, very, very disappointed. This is a bitter one to swallow. They just kept fighting and we got stupid with a couple of things and that’s how we got beat.”
The hex the Giants had over the Eagles came crashing down when Donovan McNabb tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to James Thrash with 1:52 remaining. Fittingly, the last chance for the Giants came with 1:05 left when Kerry Collins was forced out of the pocket, sacked by Jeremiah Trotter and fumbled. The ball rolled dead on the grass, right in front of the Giants’ bench, until Brandon Whiting pounced on it to seal the deal.
This was a long time coming for the Eagles, who had lost nine consecutive games to the Giants dating back to 1997. The stunning reversal allowed the Eagles (3-2) to take over first place in the NFC East and dropped the Giants to 3-3 after two straight crushing losses. This one will linger with the Giants for a long time and could cost them the division title.
“The season’s not in any way, shape or form over,” said Michael Strahan, who had two more sacks. “Who’s to say we can’t win our last 10 games?”
They won’t win many games with the offensive slop they’ve been serving lately. The Giants, sparked by the return of Tiki Barber, raced up and down the field in the first half, owning the ball for an incredible 24:35, but they were abysmal in the red zone and settled for three Morten Andersen field goals. In the second half, the Giants’ grand total of offense was 36 yards and three first downs.
“We can’t ask our defense to do anything more,” left tackle Lomas Brown said.
“I feel very sorry for our defense,” added center Dusty Zeigler.
Trailing 9-3, the Eagles took advantage of a poor 27-yard punt by Rodney Williams to mount a last-gasp drive from the Giants’ 40-yard line. They advanced all the way to the 18 before McNabb, who was sacked six times and bottled up most of the evening, sprinted to his right, bought time for himself until he located Thrash dragging across the back of the end zone. Thrash got a step on rookie cornerback Will Peterson, McNabb found him and with 1:52 remaining the Eagles notched the game’s only touchdown.
“I can’t how I’m feeling right now,” Peterson said afterward. “We had ’em where we wanted ’em. You’ve got to do whatever it takes at the end and I didn’t.”
This should have not been mission impossible for the Giants. In the first quarter, they held the ball for 13:06, the Eagles for 1:54. At one point early in the second quarter, the Giants had run 28 plays, the Eagles four. The Giants put together consecutive drives of 15, 11 and 13 plays, hogging the ball for 8:17, 5:09 and 8:28. The first-half time of possession was 24:35 for the Giants, 5:25 for the Eagles, the most lopsided time imbalance in the league in five years. The Giants had 45 plays in the first half, the Eagles 14.
This was a stunning display of both mastery and ineptitude. The Giants on consecutive possessions advanced to the Eagles’ 6, 3, 7 and 16-yard lines. For all that work, they trotted off at halftime leading by only 9-0. At the end, they weren’t leading at all.”
