How About Giving Shurmur a Chance with His QB?

Giantophile : 10/22/2018 11:51 pm
A lot of Shurmur hate tonight, and plenty of it justified. I liked going for 2 even though it baffled people at the time, but he made a lot of questionable mgmt calls tonight.

But before we bury the guy I think he needs a chance without Eli running his offense. Whatever is said (or not said) in the media it's obvious the system isn't being run to his liking. It's clearly not a fit.

I don't know that a 4th round rookie is going to look good running it, but (1) it can't be worse (2) I think Lauletta might surprise people (3) sign someone like Bridgewater or even Tyrod in the offseason and let's see what they can do. Shurmur inherited Eli and I think he needs to shake loose of him before we can evaluate it properly.

He’s not a head coach and I’m very confident anyone who thinks otherwise at this point will see it sooner or later.

He is not a head coach. He’s a coordinator.
Most of it is not justified
allstarjim : 10/22/2018 11:53 pm : link
He's actually done a pretty decent job putting lipstick on a pig.
who is his qb?
HomerJones45 : 10/22/2018 11:54 pm : link
Joe Montana? I don't see anyone else making it with this "system."

I agree that Shurmur deserves a shot with a new QB but they guys you mention aren't the answer. Tyrod and the vets you mention all pretty much stink. Lauletta will probably never be more than a backup. I think we need to come to grips with the reality that Shurmur should get to pick a rookie QB that he thinks can be a difference maker.

I'm open to canning Gettleman though. He's the one who came out front and said Eli was the guy when it was painfully obvious to many of us that Eli is toast.
I’m still with Shurmur
Jim in Forest Hills : 10/22/2018 11:55 pm : link
Not saying he isn’t making mistakes but his aggression is what I want the Giants evolve into.
Why?
jcn56 : 10/22/2018 11:56 pm : link
What has he done thus far that has given you any reason to think he deserves more time?

His record in Cleveland was abysmal. His short time here has been laughable. A 12 year old playing Madden has better time management skills than he does.

He's had the short end of the stick with some of the personnel, but they shouldn't be this bad. He's not going to get remarkably better any time soon.
Who's the QB genius?
B in ALB : 10/22/2018 11:56 pm : link
Let's say he gets the best QB in the history of football.

Is he all of a sudden a good coach?

Fuck. That. Bullshit.
We're totally going to sign Keenum or Bradford in the offseason
Anakim : 10/22/2018 11:56 pm : link
aren't we? Whoopee...
You know you’re in trouble
lax counsel : 10/22/2018 11:56 pm : link
When you’re reading names like Tyrod Taylor and Teddy Bridgewater as qb saviors.
I agree.
St. Jimmy : 10/22/2018 11:56 pm : link
He has had some bad moments but the roster is shit. Gettleman (or Mara) was the win now guy.
"His QB" won't do much more behind this O-Line either
moespree : 10/22/2018 11:57 pm : link
Solder gets steamrolled like he weighs 140 pounds on every play. Maybe "his QB" could offer more than Eli at this point...but it's not going to be much more with these guys blocking in front of him.
......
Micko : 10/22/2018 11:58 pm : link
I think he is performing up to expectations based on his time with the Browns and I think he showed some real moxy unnecessarily going for 2 when we didn’t need to at all.

I agree with this, I just don't think he'll have the luxury of having time to pick and develop a QB. This franchise isn't stable enough for Shurmur to survive that long.
I'm not encouraged early
AcesUp : 10/23/2018 12:00 am : link
But he's playing against a loaded deck. It's a little early to be calling for his head given the roster he inherited. I agree it's a little early to be putting a bulk of the blame on him.
I thought Eli was his guy.....
Doomster : 10/23/2018 12:01 am : link
Isn't that how he got the job?
I like that he owns his mistakes
Jim in Forest Hills : 10/23/2018 12:02 am : link
And his play calling challenges his players nerve. He’s trying to build a aggressive mentality.

Giants are also penalized rarely for procedural meaning he can teach.

I do want to see him with his handpicked guy.
Do any of you guys lead teams?
Jim in Forest Hills : 10/23/2018 12:03 am : link
Think about what he’s trying to instill.
Wtf do you mean “his QB”?
Sean : 10/23/2018 12:06 am : link
His QB is Eli, him & DG said he had “years left”.
To all those saying
section125 : 10/23/2018 12:07 am : link
a different QB won't do much behind this line, if you watched the other QB, he completed passes all night long under pressure. Eli was sacked 4 times in the 1st half and Ryan 3 times. (or was it 3 and 2)
Witten kept saying Ryan was throwing to his spot when rushed while Eli was holding the ball. Witten said the WR were open and so did McFarland..We could not see the WRs so I'd have to believe them. Witten sounded frustrated with Eli.

Yes the line blew big time 1st half, but so did Atlanta's.
All of you guys freaking out
allstarjim : 10/23/2018 12:09 am : link
And calling for people's jobs sound like irrational crazy people.

What tf did you expect to see this year? Did you really expect a winning product? Did you see the roster turnover? This was always going to be a bad team because nobody was turning this around in one year. This team was 3-13 last year, and experienced a ton of change, and still needs a competent QB, because this is a QB-driven league. They don't have it.

I'm enjoying this season because I'm getting to watch some exciting young players in Saquon, Hill, Carter, etc, and watching the Giants do what they need to do to get the next great QB and build the roster, which is lose a lot of games.

As much as some of you are sick and tired of the losing, this is exactly the best thing for the long-term interests of the franchise.

Again, the expectations from some of you are laughable. There's no magic fairy dust that was going to make this team a winner this year.

I bet you take what politicians say at face-value, also, huh?

What was he going to say? Eli was under contract for not one, but two additional years. Of course he was always going to be the QB for 2018, even if they had drafted Darnold.

Witten said numerous times that the o-line stunk and Manning had no time. Ryan's protection broke down on occasion, not every freaking play. Plus, the Falcons used play action buy time to which Shurmur appears allergic. Plus, the Falcons as a group have better targets. Sarkisian >>> Shurmur.

Oh please. There was plenty of politicking going on during the hiring/evaluation phase. And even if he did think Eli could do it, it's clear now that he can't. So where do you go from here? Fire the first year coach after only giving him a cooked Eli to succeed with? I think he deserves a shot with someone else.

Then you were unfortunately deluding yourself. I knew in preseason, where my suspicions were confirmed, that the team was going to lose at least another 12 games.

Don't know how many seasons it takes for people to realize this team can't win with Eli anymore.

Bingo. In hindsight that flukey 11-5 season really set us back. A great D and some fortunate wins masked plenty of problems. Eli hasn't played well (consistently) for a long time.

You make many points. First and foremost the roster turnover. Only 18 have returned from last year. That was a bad roster though and while I like DG and Shurmur, I think there are were a few signings that didn't make much sense ( Stewart, Omameh ) and a few that should have been made ( retain Fluker, sign a Right Tackle and keep Jones ).

This offense has been out of sync too long now.
Lauletta is a small school qb with low arm strength who can use

the rest of the season and off-season to strengthen his arm and learn from team practices. The team can use another off-season to improve the offensive line to give the young qb a chance at survival.

I don't think it would be fair to force Eli on him and never give him a chance with a rookie QB or someone else.

He's not doing much to inspire confidence right now, but we hired him for his work with QB's. If we're going to now turn around and never give him a shot with anyone but Eli @ age 37+, I'm not sure why we even hired him to begin with.

Lauletta should be playing ASAP - at least see if he can do anything with that.
