How long Giants re-build to get back to playoffs...

M.S. : 10/23/2018 7:10 am
...as a serious contender for an NFL Championship?

1 Year
2 Years
3 Years
4 Years
5 Years
Longer

By my count, the Giants need at least 9 new starters not currently on the roster:

1 QB, 1 TE, 1 C, 1 OG, 1 OT, 1 Edge; 1 MLB, 2 DBs

My best guess: at least 3 more years with everything hinging on finding at least a "good", not "great" replacement for Eli Manning.

There are, of course, other scenarios which could easily unfold based on the viability of our current Head Coach. For example, I grew up watching a 17-Year re-build 1964 - 1980 which swallowed five different Head Coaches.

Back then wasnt player free agency like now

Can be quicker or longer (if keep screwing up).

Right at this moment I dont trust the head decision makers..
Find a guy with some athleticism that can

play under center, and it could be soon...
Minimum of 2 years

Hence why I am totally on board with trading Snacks, Collins, and Jenkins.
Playoffs!?!?!
DC Gmen Fan : 10/23/2018 7:20 am : link
Playoffs?!?!? Playoffs!?!!?

I just we can win a game. ANY Game
1-6 with no future at QB

Can’t answer this question until they actually start rebuilding.
It's going to get worse
GiantEgo : 10/23/2018 7:23 am : link
There will be more 3-4 wins seasons before Mara realizes that he must completely break with the past a stay out of football
operations.

Fans can speed up this process by not going to games. The owners hate empty seats more than they hate losing.

I'm hoping for another NFL intervention,
Paulie Walnuts : 10/23/2018 7:25 am : link
Like back in 1978. The Maras need to stop making football decisions, including Chris, and just enjoy owning the Giants.
1 year

2 OLine starters. Still can't figure out the deal with Solder.

A free safety and another pass rusher. 3-4 players, the right players would make a huge difference.

Have to get that run game going
New Center
bc4life : 10/23/2018 7:31 am : link
has played one friggin game, and you're sure we need a new one. WTF?
A competent management team can turn this around in 2 years
jcn56 : 10/23/2018 7:32 am : link
The guys we have now? God only knows, maybe never.
At best 2 years,

that’s if things go our way.
It's hard to be optimistic

About this front office's ability and judgement when it feels like almost every move this off season was a miss. Solder is a total failure as the highest paid tackle in the league. He did not have a particularly good season last year so it shouldn't come as a shock that he is under performing now. Omameh, Ogletree, Martin? None of them look to be close to what we gave up to have them.

Love the Barkley pick. No problem with not taking the QB. If we were having some success this year, I would have been fine giving up future draft picks to be in a position to the QB of the future but we need help in so many areas that we can't possibly do that now. This team is likely going to be a sub .500 team for 2 or 3 season beyond this year. That is assuming Shurmer is the real deal(which I'm not having a ton of confidence in being the case). If he's not it could be longer.
2 years? Are you kidding me?
Doomster : 10/23/2018 8:11 am : link
It may take two years for us to have the ability to win two in a row....

To answer that question, you would have to wait until the same time, next year.....what is our record after 7 games next year?....who are the players that are in place?.....is there a change in offensive philosophy?.....did FA's and draft picks pan out? By then you will have your answer on DG/Shurm.....it will be either be a dramatic upswing or the status quo, and if the latter, this team will have dug a hole for itself that will take years and new leadership to climb out of.....
Look at the 2014 Rams
TommytheElephant : 10/23/2018 8:12 am : link
By 2016 they showed signs

2014 Donald
2015 Gurley
2016 Goff
Good question,
BIGbluegermany : 10/23/2018 8:30 am : link
no one knows, i think.First and foremost we need a true leader, a guy like Antonio Pierce would be nice!!

With one or two more drafts we should be able to be a solid football team then.
Until everyone involved

Mara, DG, and Shurmur realizes this franchise is totally broken, and remember they all went all in and went the band aid route this year, they’re going to continue to be among the 3-5 worst teams in the league. The entire OL needs to be replaced outside of Hernandez, we need pieces all over on defense (including a stud edge rusher), better depth in general, and a franchise QB. This is going to be longer than 2 years simply because great QB’s and pass rushers don’t grow on trees.

All that being said, I strongly doubt DG is the guy to put it all together.
So, in summary, we’re fucked.
with luck, 4 years minimum

Quote:

1 QB, 1 TE, 1 C, 1 OG, 1 OT, 1 Edge; 1 MLB, 2 DBs

my list is

QB: 1
OT: 2
OG: 1
OC: 1
WR: 1
ER: 2 (1 OLB, 1 DL)
ILB: 1
OLB: 1 (OLB, not ER, more of a cover LB)
CB: 3 (Jenkins won't be here long)
FS: 1
SS: ? (depends if we resign Collins)

Thats 14+...
Not to mention depth everywhere.
Anybody who thinks we can compete in 2019 is hallucinating. I expect 5 wins or less in 2019, possibly another top 5 pick in 2020.
2019 seems to be more ERs, and OL...
2020 looks like a great year for QBs...
Pick to the strength of the respective drafts, we need everything we can get.

3 yrs

I'm sure his goal was to get the OLine to play at a competent level. Thta hasn't happened.

But, I think they have a true center now. Think Solder will settle down. Hernandez continues to learn. Greco is servicable. My biggest concern is the right tackle spot. Not sure where Wheeler's ceiling is. Hell, he might even be on the wrong end of the line.

On defense - they are struggling at free safety. They need better pass rushing. Vernon is like Strahan a good two way DE, but not the dynamic pass rusher Stray was. And staying helathy sems to be an issue. Carter is coming along. They need a DE/OLB that OC's have to game plan for.

Bottom line, total rebuild not necessary. OLine, FS, pass rusher in that order. Those moves would make huge difference. Can definitely get that done in one off season.

Looking for team, partiuclarly OLine to get better as season wears on.

Not gonna lose my shit over a bad season. Giants losing doesn't make opne of my kids sick or burn my house down. It's entertainment.
At least 3 years
Dave in PA : 10/23/2018 8:47 pm : link
Assuming they nail Eli’s replacement. Could be a lot longer if they screw up the QB transition. Think the Washington Redskins for the past damn near 20 years
Going with three years
ChathamMark : 10/23/2018 8:57 pm : link
O-line still a big problem, and with Saquon, can't ignore that. Like Dave in PA before me, they can't screw up the QB transition.
It's possible
Jerry in DC : 10/23/2018 10:02 pm : link
to sneak into the playoffs as a mediocre team. Stay healthy , get some breaks etc. Kind of like how teams like the Redskins or dolphins might be in the playoffs once in a while. That's possible within 5 years.

To be an actual good team with upside that contends consistently for 3-4 years? I dont see it happening unless there are major organizational changes or we hit on a top 5 elite qb. If I had to bet, I'd say that nobody on the giants right now will be on the next really good team. Except Tom Quinn of course. He'll be here forever.
