...as a serious contender for an NFL Championship?

By my count, the Giants need at least 9 new starters not currently on the roster:
1 QB, 1 TE, 1 C, 1 OG, 1 OT, 1 Edge; 1 MLB, 2 DBs
My best guess: at least 3 more years with everything hinging on finding at least a "good", not "great" replacement for Eli Manning.
There are, of course, other scenarios which could easily unfold based on the viability of our current Head Coach. For example, I grew up watching a 17-Year re-build 1964 - 1980 which swallowed five different Head Coaches.
Right at this moment I dont trust the head decision makers..
I just we can win a game. ANY Game
operations.
Fans can speed up this process by not going to games. The owners hate empty seats more than they hate losing.
A free safety and another pass rusher. 3-4 players, the right players would make a huge difference.
Have to get that run game going
Love the Barkley pick. No problem with not taking the QB. If we were having some success this year, I would have been fine giving up future draft picks to be in a position to the QB of the future but we need help in so many areas that we can't possibly do that now. This team is likely going to be a sub .500 team for 2 or 3 season beyond this year. That is assuming Shurmer is the real deal(which I'm not having a ton of confidence in being the case). If he's not it could be longer.
To answer that question, you would have to wait until the same time, next year.....what is our record after 7 games next year?....who are the players that are in place?.....is there a change in offensive philosophy?.....did FA's and draft picks pan out? By then you will have your answer on DG/Shurm.....it will be either be a dramatic upswing or the status quo, and if the latter, this team will have dug a hole for itself that will take years and new leadership to climb out of.....
2014 Donald
2015 Gurley
2016 Goff
With one or two more drafts we should be able to be a solid football team then.
All that being said, I strongly doubt DG is the guy to put it all together.
So, in summary, we’re fucked.
1 QB, 1 TE, 1 C, 1 OG, 1 OT, 1 Edge; 1 MLB, 2 DBs
my list is
QB: 1
OT: 2
OG: 1
OC: 1
WR: 1
ER: 2 (1 OLB, 1 DL)
ILB: 1
OLB: 1 (OLB, not ER, more of a cover LB)
CB: 3 (Jenkins won't be here long)
FS: 1
SS: ? (depends if we resign Collins)
Thats 14+...
Not to mention depth everywhere.
Anybody who thinks we can compete in 2019 is hallucinating. I expect 5 wins or less in 2019, possibly another top 5 pick in 2020.
2019 seems to be more ERs, and OL...
2020 looks like a great year for QBs...
Pick to the strength of the respective drafts, we need everything we can get.
But, I think they have a true center now. Think Solder will settle down. Hernandez continues to learn. Greco is servicable. My biggest concern is the right tackle spot. Not sure where Wheeler's ceiling is. Hell, he might even be on the wrong end of the line.
On defense - they are struggling at free safety. They need better pass rushing. Vernon is like Strahan a good two way DE, but not the dynamic pass rusher Stray was. And staying helathy sems to be an issue. Carter is coming along. They need a DE/OLB that OC's have to game plan for.
Bottom line, total rebuild not necessary. OLine, FS, pass rusher in that order. Those moves would make huge difference. Can definitely get that done in one off season.
Looking for team, partiuclarly OLine to get better as season wears on.
Not gonna lose my shit over a bad season. Giants losing doesn't make opne of my kids sick or burn my house down. It's entertainment.
To be an actual good team with upside that contends consistently for 3-4 years? I dont see it happening unless there are major organizational changes or we hit on a top 5 elite qb. If I had to bet, I'd say that nobody on the giants right now will be on the next really good team. Except Tom Quinn of course. He'll be here forever.
