Barkley's Pass Blocking

mittenedman : 10/23/2018 10:17 pm
Guy is a PSU record-holder, squat king in the weight room but right now he has no confidence in pass pro. It's getting worse. After he got run over a few times he tried to chip Beasley and fell flat on his face without making contact.

He's a mess in this very critical aspect of being an every down RB.

He's sensational with the ball in his hands, just goes to show everyone's got something to work on. Crazy that nobody on this team can block though. OL, TE's and hey - your RB can't pick up a blitz either. Quite absurd.
he has not been good at pass blocking
GiantsFan84 : 10/23/2018 10:19 pm : link
it is an area he can improve on for sure
He's a rookie with plenty of potential to be an effective blocker
B in ALB : 10/23/2018 10:21 pm : link
Relax, tuff guy.
...
christian : 10/23/2018 10:23 pm : link
On two occasions I saw his head get seriously snapped back when blocking. That can't be good.
He's a rookie and this is not something
montanagiant : 10/23/2018 10:24 pm : link
He was ever asked to do in College. He will be fine with some seasoning
He hasn't missed too many
SHO'NUFF : 10/23/2018 10:34 pm : link
assignments from what I can tell.
watching that play
mdthedream : 10/23/2018 10:34 pm : link
he just needs to give the hit instead of take the hit.
Don't overreact to Booger's overreaction.
bceagle05 : 10/23/2018 10:36 pm : link
Doesn't seem like much of an issue overall.
This team has at least 1000 problems
Stu11 : 10/23/2018 11:24 pm : link
Saquon Barkley ain't one....
He'll get better. He'll learn to stay low and initiate contact.
CT Charlie : 10/23/2018 11:54 pm : link
Sadly, he'll have plenty of in-game practice, given our porous O-line.
We should bring in Bradshaw
FranknWeezer : 10/24/2018 1:37 am : link
And have him work for a few weeks with Saquon on pass pro.
his leverage looked awful
Bill in UT : 10/24/2018 1:56 am : link
he shouldn't be getting knocked backwards by a safety. And he had plenty of time to set himself
he'll figure it out
bc4life : 10/24/2018 4:42 am : link
Maybe he can reach out to Jacobs. Still remember him decleating Trent Cole during a game. Ah - good times.
Let’s see if we can get one of our Pro Bowl OL to open
joe48 : 10/24/2018 4:49 am : link
A few holes at the line of scrimmage for Barkley once in a while.
He’s a rookie
Tuckrule : 10/24/2018 6:28 am : link
How many college backs who are of his talent come in able to block? Was he ever asked to pass pro at penn state? Highly doubtful considering he was there only weapon. He’ll get better from what I see it’s technical. He dips the head gets his base a little too wide and doesn’t get his pad level down. He’ll learn
His pass blocking isn't great
eclipz928 : 10/24/2018 7:05 am : link
but it hasn't been an issue this year. It'll get better - let's give attention to the more pressing needs of this team.
It's the reverse of
Joey in VA : 10/24/2018 7:25 am : link
How his body is used to absorbing contact and using it to gain momentum. Physically he can do it, mentally he has to learn not to brace but initiate contact. I am certain he's going to level someone once he makes that switch and he will. He's too conscientious and too physically gifted not to.
Are you telling
XBRONX : 10/24/2018 7:45 am : link
me that the $3 millon mentor Stewart didnt work with Barkley on pass blocking?
He got run over once
section125 : 10/24/2018 7:46 am : link
but picked up a few blitzes afterward just fine. There is nothing that kid is unwilling to do.

He wiffs on his blocks and he has missed some assignments from time to time. It’s all over the Cowboys film.
Actually his scouting reports refl;ected that he was a good blocker
Simms11 : 10/24/2018 8:49 am : link
coming out of college. He needs work, for sure, but I'm fairly confident he'll get better.
His pass protection had been poor
RollBlue : 10/24/2018 9:49 am : link
and this is week 7 - the comment about Stewart is spot on, IMO also.
trade him for a 2020 5th...

rookie RB struggles at blocking? NO WAY
Greg from LI : 10/24/2018 9:52 am : link
He'll figure it out. He's a big strong kid, the last thing I'd worry about is his blocking. Ahmad Bradshaw was a terrific blocker and Barkley has 40 pounds on him.
Ahmad Bradshaw became terrific in that area.
Big Blue '56 : 10/24/2018 9:58 am : link
Wasn’t the case in his rookie year, at least early on
On a serious note...
Dan in the Springs : 10/24/2018 2:17 pm : link
a RB's pass-blocking is about two things:

First - understand your assignment, make your reads, and pick the right person to block.

Second - execute the block the best you can. This generally involves establishing a proper base.

The second becomes harder if you're struggling with the first. I think we've seen a few times where Barkley didn't have his base set right and he was overpowered at the point. Time will help him improve his decision making which will in turn allow him to more quickly set his base to take on blitzers.

In other words, improvement can be expected from the rookie.
Gallman is a better pass blocker then he is and he is 20 pounds
fredgbrown : 10/24/2018 2:49 pm : link
lighter.

And Bradshaw didn't start out as a terrific blocker, either. I remember a game in New Orleans (I think) where Eli was visibly angry at a young Bradshaw after he whiffed on a block.
Actually Gallman hits the hole harder than most guys of his size...
fredgbrown : 10/24/2018 2:54 pm : link
he frame looks slight but the pile always moves forward when he hits it.I realize he has been in the NFL longer so he has more practice at pass blocking but he was good at it last year too.
Barkley has been waiting for the rusher flatfooted
NyquistX3 : 10/24/2018 3:44 pm : link
rather than getting some momentum going forward to meet him, and that's why he's been getting run over. He will learn and become excellent at pass pro.
Bradshaw's issues were different
mittenedman : 10/24/2018 4:30 pm : link
He had recognition issues. But even as a rookie he fucked people up when he hit them. He had that low center of gravity and was fearless delivering shots. He'd take anybody in the league head on. One of the reasons he's on my shortlist of all time favorite players.

Barkley's problems IMO are not recognition, but rather on the collision aspect. He knows who to block, but not how. Bradshaw knew how, but not who. Barkley doesn't innately crave contact like AB did, neither with interior running or pass pro. My opinion.

he actually did do it a fair amount in Moorhead's offense. Out of 11 personnel they ran enough of a range of pass protections. Overall he just needs more experience with the speed of the game.
