Guy is a PSU record-holder, squat king in the weight room but right now he has no confidence in pass pro. It's getting worse. After he got run over a few times he tried to chip Beasley and fell flat on his face without making contact.
He's a mess in this very critical aspect of being an every down RB.
He's sensational with the ball in his hands, just goes to show everyone's got something to work on. Crazy that nobody on this team can block though. OL, TE's and hey - your RB can't pick up a blitz either. Quite absurd.
He wiffs on his blocks and he has missed some assignments from time to time. It’s all over the Cowboys film.
jk
First - understand your assignment, make your reads, and pick the right person to block.
Second - execute the block the best you can. This generally involves establishing a proper base.
The second becomes harder if you're struggling with the first. I think we've seen a few times where Barkley didn't have his base set right and he was overpowered at the point. Time will help him improve his decision making which will in turn allow him to more quickly set his base to take on blitzers.
In other words, improvement can be expected from the rookie.
And Bradshaw didn't start out as a terrific blocker, either. I remember a game in New Orleans (I think) where Eli was visibly angry at a young Bradshaw after he whiffed on a block.
Barkley's problems IMO are not recognition, but rather on the collision aspect. He knows who to block, but not how. Bradshaw knew how, but not who. Barkley doesn't innately crave contact like AB did, neither with interior running or pass pro. My opinion.
he actually did do it a fair amount in Moorhead's offense. Out of 11 personnel they ran enough of a range of pass protections. Overall he just needs more experience with the speed of the game.
