NGT: My high school just won its 1st-ever sectional title!

Beezer : 11/3/2018 3:07 pm
Section 4 Class C Susquehanna Valley Sabers beat Waverly this afternoon 62-7 and is now 10-0. Last five games they’ve outscored opponents 292-13. Currently ranked 2nd in the state. Cambridge/Salem is 1st. They beat zchatham last night 35-17.

First year for SV in Class C. Lots of years at B, going back to my playing days in the early 1980s. I played LT on offense, rotational DT/DE (occasional outside LB) on D back then. Our teams played bigger schools fairly tough my senior year but we didn’t win much.

An awful lot of fun, in the area where Chenango Forks and Maine-Endwell are long. (They’re actually playing each other for he Class B title right now, no score early.)

Love this time of year.
Congrats

our group in Charlotte has about 7-10 SV alums in it!!

Back when the team was terrible. Classes of '86-90
My home team Maine-Endwell

got beat by Forks today. I played for ME from 74-77 and coached there in 85. Then moved to Florida. I remember playing against SV.
Fats, 86 was my sisters’ (twins) class.
Beezer : 11/3/2018 10:56 pm : link
They weren’t good but they were better than us a few years before them. Today we blame it on coaching (not without decent reason lol).

But this is a fun crew. I believe their closest game was 36-7, and they dressed the JVs that night and let them play the second half (against Spencer-Van Etten). I believe it was 36-0 at the half.

In SV’s win over Harpursville, at SV, it was agreed upon that they’d run the clock the entire second half. I wasn’t there but a friend who was said it COULD have been 100-0.

Meanwhile, the JVs just finished their third straight unbeaten season (and none of them have been close - at all), and they’ve only lost 1 game (by 1 point) in 4 years (as 7th graders).

They have a shot to pull it off this year. And who knows? Maybe a couple more. (I understand the current junior high/modified team isn’t quite as high-flying.) The window is right now.

Ron, your Spartans beat us my senior year
Beezer : 11/3/2018 10:58 pm : link
13-0 at your place. We played a few teams tough that year (fall of 81).
We also lost 13-0 to Oneonta
Beezer : 11/3/2018 11:05 pm : link
and Syracuse-bound Tim Pidgeon. (Not sure on the spelling there). We also lost 20-8 to sectional champ Johnson City that season.

I think it was the 86 team that broken the winless streak at our school.

Fats, ask your crew how many of them were at the Corbin bash on Main Street, Kirkwood, after a win over M-E in I think the fall of 85. (Sorry Ron Lol)

love our section 4 football. i'm from a tiny town just down 17 from you, Hancock.

congrats on the section title!
Royal, you guts had a solid season!
Beezer : 11/4/2018 6:19 am : link
Couple losses to ranked teams. Not bad.

Oneonta must have peaked at the close of the season. They stunk forever then got a couple wins at the end.

Not a bad season at all. played a few "air raid" high school teams. Hard to defend the pass all game!!

Sidney!

That kid was terrific. And I’ve read he played soccer last year. Neveraurf football before. Crazy.
Mark May came out of the central NY area as well as
GiantsUA : 11/4/2018 8:38 am : link
Tim Pidgeon(sp).

A good friend of mine played 8 man football in the early 1980's, for a small school outside of Cooperstown.

SV class of ‘of ‘90 here! I’d be curious as to who’s in your group, I probably know some of them. And yes, we were terrible back then. We went 0-8 my senior season, it was glorious. Fred Colosi (RIP) was brought in from Binghamton High, who was a power house and got the program excited as hell. It didn’t help....

Yes, Sidney really runs a pass heavy offense.

Lots of talent in Section 4

Mark May was Oneonta. Late 1970s. Can't recall the exact class year. Probably '76-77, in there, since he was draft in 1981 out of Pitt (to the Skins). Lots of Mark May stuff displayed when you walk in near their basketball gym.
Tim Pidgeon (also Oneonta), Class of 83,
Beezer : 11/4/2018 10:22 am : link
played at Syracuse. Played 3 games for the Dolphins as a LB (had a fumble recovery).

His real claim to fame, though, was on the opening kickoff of our game against Oneonta at SV, fall of 1981, he took the kick near the end zone and went up the right sideline. I was on the far left of our coverage team. Near the sideline, he made a move to the outside and I missed - he ran through my outstretched left arm, which promptly went numb. I sat out the entire first defensive series. Feeling came back in time for our first series on offense.

He was a load, even as a junior that year.

BBI's own Giant Mike is an SV alum.

Also, one of the guys who went to SV has a long standing fantasy team - the Kirkwood Lancers.

nice to have some uplifting NGTs to lighten the gloom

Didn't know FatMan was glued in to the southern tier
Lot more Southern Tier people in here than I thought

Beezer when I coached at ME in 1985, I was fortunate to not be a part of the Varsity staff. They lost every game. I was head coach of the JV team. I do remember a few of the SV players. Jamie Kimmell( I think he played at Colgate as well) I think there was a Paul Lewis also. But this from 74-77 era.

I'm an Elmira kid.

Their combined HS team has been rolling for a few years now. Back when I was there, we were getting our asses handed to us by Binghamton and U-E
Not to change the subject but

I remember playing against Elmira Southside and Elmira Free Academy. We scrimmaged Horseheads and got in a fight. Then when I coached at ME we played against Corning. I believe there were 2 Corning schools. Was it East and West?
Yep..
FatMan in Charlotte : 11/4/2018 4:04 pm : link
there used to be 2 Corning schools, East and West. East was usually better. In my time, they had a LB named Brian Lebaron who I think ended up at Syracuse.

The population in the Elmira/Corning area has steeply declined, so EFA and Southside combined several years ago and Corning did as well.

So many of the schools up there havr gotten much smaller.
SuperRonJohnson : 11/4/2018 5:07 pm : link
Maine Endwell's graduating class of 1978 was 365 students. IBM left the area and other places closed. I don't think their class size is even half of what it was when I graduated.

I wonder if he ever played in some of our full-tackle Kirkwood v Conklin no-pads football battles at Kirkwood Park. Lots of us couldn’t walk right for days after those games. Lots of fun though. (My Conklin squad won every one. Including one where Richie Smith was tackled at about the 2 on the final play of the game.)

Jon Kimmel went to Colgate. Gotta be a 76-ish grad.

Jamie graduated in 80. Played at Syracuse. Had two season with the Raiders as their long-snapper.

Jerry graduated in 81, a year before me. Also at Syracuse. He actually played two games for the Giants. Started both in 87 at LB.

Imagine being able to say you startedat LB for the Giants? Two games. But still. Lol. Pretty cool.

I don’t know exact numbers but I’d guess Maine-Endwell graduates in the 160 ballpark these days.
That's right.

Jon Kimmel. The Kimmels were all good players.

not strictly on topic but Army won the Commander in Chief trophy today

by beating Air Force - big news here in the Hudson Valley. The local cable news channel can't get enough of Army football. Or the fact that the Jets' field goal kicker went to Marist.

You driving up Saturday? I'm thinking of going.
Can't make it to Cicero Saturday.
Beezer : 11/5/2018 11:08 am : link
We have our youth basketball tourney same day.

I expect them to get past Holland Patent. So I'm counting on going to U-E the following Saturday for the semi - which will start at 11 a.m. (If SV makes it to the championship, they'll play Friday the 23rd at 6 p.m., day after Thanksgiving.
