Did anyone see Sean Payton having this success when here?

Sean : 11/5/2018 7:16 pm
What did BBI think of Sean Payton? My biggest memory of Payton here was the play call in Arizona right before the half in 2002 - Kerry Collins throws a pick 6 and the Giants end up losing.

Later on in the year Fassel took over the play calling & the Giants go 10-6 and make the playoffs. The next year Payton joins Parcells in Dallas & he is considered a Parcells disciple. It seems like the move to join Parcells was the turning point of his career.

How did BBI view Payton? Did anyone see him as a young/innovative offensive mind who would go on and have what may be a HOF career as HC?
I thought he was a rising star when fassel relinquished

Play calling responsibilities to him
Then I remember he hit a wall...never thought he’d be this successful
The Giants felt he had a bright future as a HC

And clearly kept the wrong guy. But Drew Brees has had something to do with it as well. Just like Brady has with BB.
He learned from his mistakes here

Talented offensive coordinator but people forget all the nutty presnap motioning and shifting he did on almost every play. When Fassel took over and eliminated the nonsense we immediately did better. I think he realized that the misdirection was hindering the offensive rhythm and he hasn't done that nearly as much in NO.
Growing pains

It helps to have a HOF QB throwing in a dome

Didn’t forget, I always thought the same thing! Way to much pre-snap movement. Imagine running that with Eli, we’d never get a play off! He has toned ur down and along with Brees, have created a powerful offense. I think Sean Payton version 2 would work well with Eli, granted he was given a decent Offesive Line

I remember it similarly. His first offenses were a little gimmicky at first I believe....all the shifting right before the snap. It was refreshing but at the same time not what I was used to. Then when it got really inconsistent and Fassel took over the play calling, that offense took off. Like insanely hot. I remember thinking that Tampa and Philly would not have stopped that offense if they didnt blow that game in SF. Ugh.
In summation,

No I did not see Payton as perennially dominant as a HC.

That's what I remember too.
I always thought he was a talented OC

and hated seeing his name when he was hired in Dallas, where he also did pretty well.

Never would have dreamed he'd have the success he did as a coach, though. He seemed to me like another in the Norv Turner mold, a great OC who was not suited to run a team.
Yes

I liked him but it is more to do with Brees than anything else. Hell its about time if you really think about it. Brees has been playing Hall of Fame football since he got there.
Yes

He is brilliant with pass routes. Then, i have only seen a few plays this year, but possibly they updated the run game as well.

Parcells
Lines of Scrimmage : 11/6/2018 10:57 am : link
Bill Parcells taught him well. Payton has almost always had a above average offensive line and a power running game something the Giants were not able to maintain post 2011.
He’s a very good coach but

Having Brees has helped a tad
I remember at camp in 1999

Payton leaps in his SUV and reverses, nearly hits Keith Hamilton. You think 'shit Sean if there's one guy you don't want to hit'...Payton leaps out and absolutely goes nuts on Hammer... who kinda takes it and slinks off.

That told you all you needed to know about Payton.

FWIW Accorsi told SOTI Payton was the best coach on Fassel's staff back when Fox seemed the obvious candidate. Losing Payton really hurt Fassel with EA.
I was sort of ambivalent on Payton...

Plus, I thought Fassel was the driver of the offense.

So I never saw this level of success coming. He's easily one of the great player-callers we've ever seen.

But, as mentioned, it certainly helps having Brees, a player with a PhD in QBing. You can design quite a playbook with him under center.

What I don't think Payton gets enough credit for is identifying and developing talent.
Honestly..

the guy is a freaking scumbag without morals.

Without even going into the drug allegations, this is a guy who had Gregg Williams as his DC and stood by him
Lombardi, Landry, Belichick and Payton were expendable

But hey, at least we held on to Ray Handley.
I am not fan

Over rated in my book. He's a good coach just not a great Bonner. He is not liking up winning seasons down there or piling up playoff wins. He's a long way removed from his SB, which I credit to the Colts coaches incompetence.
Success?

Saints have been 7-9, 4 of last 6 years....

Compared to the Giants, it's great....
