NFT: TV brand: Sharp vs TCL

lpdcan28 : 11/8/2018 9:14 am
looking to get a smart tv (40 inches). both have the built in apps like netflix. i think the tcl has the roku. the sharp brand i can get for $20 cheaper, but thats not the issue. i just want to know if anyone has experience with either of these brands and these types of tv. it will be used for mostly my sons xbox, but having some of these other features cant hurt. thanks.
I own a 55"and 40"

TCL. Love the picture and both have Roku built in. Had Sharp in the past. I think the TCL has a better picture, FWIW.

went to costco and bought a TCL for my son for basically the same reason you are looking, except it is for his computer gaming. He has been happy with it and the roku built in helps as I stream for TV and it is all built in for him.

Picture looks great on it as well and it seemed to rate well when I looked it up.
Both pretty low end brands

but should be fine for what you need. Personally I wouldn't go any lower end than a D series Vizio. You will notice a difference in picture quality.
rtings.com has the TCL TV's rated pretty high

I trust them. I have two TCL TV's and an almost $2000 Sony Bravia HDR 4k TV. I can't tell a difference between them to be honest.
I bought a TCL 48"

when we remodeled our living room earlier this year.

The TV was ranked by Wirecutter at the time as both the BEST VALUE and the BEST OVERALL (even vs the higher end Samsungs and etc), so I got it. I was skeptical because it was pretty damn inexpensive. I think like $329 or something.

Have been very satisfied with it.

Picture quality is personal. I could not see a difference when they were all lined up. I find most HD TV pictures ridiculously sharp showing tiny details, like grains of sand around the plate or mound quite clearly.

Agreed, it usually comes down to contrast and hue. I like colors that pop and deep blacks. You'll notice the difference if you compare with the top end brands.

I stay away from Sony altogether. They got by on their brand but I’d never pay for a tv of theirs again. So many better manufacturers.

Samsung is the best of the top end but of the mid level I think TCL, Sharp and Vizio all stack up well with each other. Do your research, make sure the unit has everything you require (# of HDMI inputs, 3rd party app integrations, etc). Sound will always suck so don’t bother investigating that too much.
A handful of factories makes all the panels

The difference is typically in the driver electronics and how they're lit. The difference between the bottom of the market and the mid-tier isn't as great as you might think, and certainly smaller than the price differential.

Most important thing will be to get it from a place that allows an easy return if something breaks or you don't like it within 90 days. You're not looking for extreme longevity out of a cheap set, but you don't want to be stuck with it if you're not happy.
I recently bought a 55" TCL with Roku...
Mike in St. Louis : 11/8/2018 10:46 am : link
and I'm very happy with it...the Roku interface is very easy to use and IMHO is better than the Samsung Smart TV it replaced...

the sound isn't great but I don't think the sound from most TVs at the mid to lower end have good sound...so I bought a sound bar...problem solved...

I have a tcl p series 55” and a sony x900f. TCL is great for the price but the sony is much better. The motion handling puts it above most tvs. TCL had DSE during fast moving stuff.
Strictly between these 2 brands
Dave in PA : 11/8/2018 1:39 pm : link
I’d go with TCL for the Roku interface alone. I just went TV shopping myself (wound up getting a 43 inch Samsung 7 series as a secondary TV) and truthfully the TCL probably performs just as well with an even better interface. I went Samsung on the assumption that it’s less likely to have a major malfunction (KOW). After owning a Panasonic plasma for the last 9 years, all of these budget TV’s, even 4K UHD models like the Samsung, look like crap in comparison. When old Pani finally gives up the ghost I might just find a used plasma to replace it with. Cannot beat that picture. OLED might come close, but at a major premium.
TCL is low-end
Knineteen : 11/8/2018 2:58 pm : link
but man, the picture looked fantastic on the display unit in Wal-Mart.

TCL was suppose to have come out with "higher-end" brands last year. Might want to look into them.

I have one of these. I can't stand the Smart TV interface. Way too cute and slick with all its features. It tries to detect the attached device and display the proper icon on the menu but half the time it's wrong. There are times when the remote and TV don't sync and I can't shut the damn TV off.
The "one remote for all" feature is an abortion as well.

Wanted to order MLB last season and could not get it on my samsun smart TV because samsung would not pay MLB for the update. Had to buy a rook and put it on that TV in order to get the MLB package. Why should anyone buy a samsung smart TV if they won't pay premium sites for updates?
Had to buy a roku
