looking to get a smart tv (40 inches). both have the built in apps like netflix. i think the tcl has the roku. the sharp brand i can get for $20 cheaper, but thats not the issue. i just want to know if anyone has experience with either of these brands and these types of tv. it will be used for mostly my sons xbox, but having some of these other features cant hurt. thanks.
Picture looks great on it as well and it seemed to rate well when I looked it up.
The TV was ranked by Wirecutter at the time as both the BEST VALUE and the BEST OVERALL (even vs the higher end Samsungs and etc), so I got it. I was skeptical because it was pretty damn inexpensive. I think like $329 or something.
Have been very satisfied with it.
Picture quality is personal. I could not see a difference when they were all lined up. I find most HD TV pictures ridiculously sharp showing tiny details, like grains of sand around the plate or mound quite clearly.

but should be fine for what you need. Personally I wouldn't go any lower end than a D series Vizio. You will notice a difference in picture quality.

Agreed, it usually comes down to contrast and hue. I like colors that pop and deep blacks. You'll notice the difference if you compare with the top end brands.
I stay away from Sony altogether. They got by on their brand but I’d never pay for a tv of theirs again. So many better manufacturers.
Samsung is the best of the top end but of the mid level I think TCL, Sharp and Vizio all stack up well with each other. Do your research, make sure the unit has everything you require (# of HDMI inputs, 3rd party app integrations, etc). Sound will always suck so don’t bother investigating that too much.
Most important thing will be to get it from a place that allows an easy return if something breaks or you don't like it within 90 days. You're not looking for extreme longevity out of a cheap set, but you don't want to be stuck with it if you're not happy.
the sound isn't great but I don't think the sound from most TVs at the mid to lower end have good sound...so I bought a sound bar...problem solved...

I trust them. I have two TCL TV's and an almost $2000 Sony Bravia HDR 4k TV. I can't tell a difference between them to be honest.

I have a tcl p series 55” and a sony x900f. TCL is great for the price but the sony is much better. The motion handling puts it above most tvs. TCL had DSE during fast moving stuff.
TCL was suppose to have come out with "higher-end" brands last year. Might want to look into them.
I have one of these. I can't stand the Smart TV interface. Way too cute and slick with all its features. It tries to detect the attached device and display the proper icon on the menu but half the time it's wrong. There are times when the remote and TV don't sync and I can't shut the damn TV off.
The "one remote for all" feature is an abortion as well.

I recently bought the same TV, and a sound bar, and have been very happy with it as well.
Loved the Roku interface so much I got a Roku for the Samsung TV..
