Big Blue Banter podcast idea:Mike Munchak (Hal Hunter sucks)

Brown Recluse : 11/8/2018 9:55 am
Apologies for the weird thread title. There are only so many character spaces.

I was listening to the Big Blue Banter podcast this morning with Dan Schneier and Nick Turchyn and Dan tossed out an interesting idea in trying to pry Mike Munchak from the Steelers (by the way, I really enjoy this podcast. If you aren't listening I highly recommend. Best Giants podcast out there by far imo).

The Hal Hunter hire was a mystery (at least to me) from the beginning. The Browns in 2016 allowed an NFL worst 66 sacks under his tutelage. The Giants this year are on pace for an NFL worst 62 sacks under his tutelage. I haven't read anything anywhere about his connection to Shurmur or Gettleman. He didn't have great credentials. When he was hired I believe most of us said, "who?"

Meanwhile, Solari is out in Seattle making chicken salad from chicken shit, like he was supposed to be doing here. Fluker is playing well and they are running the ball much better since he arrived. In hindsight (yes this is entirely with hindsight) he probably shouldn't have been fired as the line is actually much much worse this season (who'd have thought that was possible) than it was last season. But whats done is done. This position on the coaching staff absolutely has to be solidified in the offsesason for the Giants. No more misfires.

Mike Munchak is highly regarded as one of the best, if not the best OL coach in the league. Year after year, injury after injury, the Steelers have one of the best lines in the league no matter who is playing. He was a possibility for the Cardinals head coaching position last year and he may very well be on some head coach lists again this year. Assuming that doesn't happen, It would be interesting if the Giants aggressively pursued him. It might even be worth firing Mike Shula (who seemingly has added little value) and offer Munchak a dual role as OC/OL coach and offer him whatever the highest salary is among offensive coordinators in the league.

I don't really have a firm grasp on who else is out there they could bring in. If not Munchak, who is on your radar to take over Hal Hunters position next season?

the chances of the Giants prying away a coach that they want to retain are close to zero.

I really was hoping that Mara would have been smart enough to interview

A) A GM candidate from the Steelers
B) A head coaching candidate from the Steelers

It would have been outside the family hire, but not so much that he wouldn't be comfortable with it. Why they didn't interview anyone from there, with the great relationships they have with them will always boggle my mind!

When of coworker found out that we hired him he was like what the fuck are your guys thinking.

He also was the OL coach for Indy after Peyton Manning/Mudd dominance left town. Irsay brings in Hal and as with anywhere Hal coaches, the OL turns to shit. In our case, the OL was already craptastic. But he should never have been hired. The only reason that I thought that was plausible was because he was the only one sitting on his couch and was available. I hated the hire then and have been banging the drum to get rid of him. I think he is poison. I would rather they not have an OL coach for the rest of the season.

Thats a fair point. But I'm pretty sure the Giants don't need their permission if they technically offer him a higher position than the one he currently has. I don't think the Rooneys will hold it against the Maras if they hire a coach who probably won't be with the Steelers much longer anyway. They may already have someone ready to step in if he leaves. He almost left last season. I'm sure his departure and replacement has at least already been a topic of discussion in the meeting room.

That's where I'm guessing familiarity plays against them. Who knows how dysfunctional it is inside Giants HQ?

Back to Hunter - although there's nothing in his history that would suggest he's a good line coach (great hire, right?) - Shurmur was supposedly touted for his OL expertise, having played and coached along the OL. So, he's not only unable to hire the right guy, but not able to help correct some of the mistakes they're making?

I'd rather not sack Hunter at this point. Let him coach another year along with Shurmur, and let them both go out with the wash at the end of another losing campaign in 2019.
What about Mike Tice!?!?

This, I hope that Hal Hunter is fired after the season because to put it nicely he was a curious hire to begin with. The line is playing as poorly as last season despite the additions of Solder and Hernandez. Hunter needs to be let go but there is no way the Giants poach Munchak away. If I were the Giants I would call up Russ Grimm and try to talk him out of retirement. He was among the elite OL coaches and he just retired last season. Perhaps the Giants could persuade him to come back.
The one thing I'd love to see the Giants do
jcn56 : 11/8/2018 10:18 am : link
and I know some teams have larger staffs, but not sure what the relative differences are - is hire more position coaches.

Have an OL coach, then a couple of assistant OL coaches. Not just a couple of younger guys starting out with a title, but actual coaches with experience, either at the pro or college level.

To me, it feels like the Giants are not taking advantaged of the uncapped ways to improve your team. If you were looking for a school for your kid, you'd be looking at the teacher to student ratio. Well, these coaches are essentially teachers. A big part of the problem has been that spread offenses in college and changes to the CBA means less practice time for guys coming in with less exposure to pro offenses, which means more time spent learning technique.

Might not be practical, because there just might not be enough qualified people to do so. And they might be doing this already and it doesn't help. But if not, I'd be out trying my best not just to find the best guy, but a bunch of the best guys I could to have more 1:1 time with these guys to try to improve their technique.

I don't know why though. It really shouldn't hurt them, if anything they would be more willing to help each other when the time is right.

They have a more successful business model, why not collaborate with them and improve your own.

So stupid, to not even try!

I don't see how it's helping both sides by the Giants taking Munchak away from the Steelers. That's just helping the Giants while weakening a contender.

I'm just saying their is relationship there that could be leveraged by either side. You should at least try.

What I meant was - if there's something seriously wrong with Giants management at the top, then the team most likely to know it would be the Steelers given the relationship.

If that's the case, even if Munchak were looking to walk and they were willing to let him go - there's a good chance he doesn't look twice at this shitshow.
Sounds like typical fan logic

Just hire Munchak because the Steelers apparently wouldn't care about losing him.

Hal Hunter have any success anywhere as an OL coach?

I can't imagine how our OL can look like such complete shit as it does now. Then again, I thought that last season.

Don't be a dickhead.

The Steelers can't keep him if the Giants offer him a promotion. It isn't has if there haven't been instances where players or coaches leave teams, much to the surprise of fans and media. It was a hypothetical scenario. Will it happen? Most likely no. Would attempting to get him here be a good thing? Yes.
Ultimately, this is on Shurmur and Gettleman

So would getting a bunch of other head coaches or assistant coaches. Don't you think their current team would just let him go because the Giants want him? It's typical stupid talk. - Just go hire this guy, just trade for that guy and it fixes all the problems
