NFT: Spam Calls on Cell Phone

Samiam : 11/8/2018 11:54 am
I am getting about 20 spam calls a day and this is continuing past the election. I’ve been blocking the numbers but the calls are continuing from other numbers. They’re from area codes all over the country as well as my exchange and I’ve even gotten calls from my own cell number. Is there something that can be done about this? I have nomorobo for our landline but friends have told me it’s not very effective on the cell. Any suggestions?
Its fucking ridiculous

It has to stop, i get a bunch everyday. I'm on the do not call list. Blocking the numbers doesnt work, they just call from different numbers every time

they aren't calling from the number you see on your caller id. That is a spoofed number, which is why it changes every time. Blocking the number will do nothing.
I use an app called
Tom from LI : 11/8/2018 12:12 pm : link
YouMail on my android. I used to get 30 a day.. now I get none. He basically plays a phone disconnected sound to the call and you are removed from the call list.

It is fantastic.
They're doing you a favor.
NoPeanutz : 11/8/2018 12:18 pm : link
would you rather the IRS just show up and arrest you without warning, without offering you a settlement?
Same
Anakim : 11/8/2018 12:22 pm : link
I get it from numbers similar to my own and I also get them from like Texas, California, Kansas, and Hawaii.

Fucking annoying.
I ignore all calls
Gman11 : 11/8/2018 12:29 pm : link
unless they are from people in my contacts.

The do-not-call list is useless. Only legitimate businesses pay attention to it. They spoof the numbers, so blocking them does no good.

Just ignore them. If it's a legitimate call they'll leave a message on your voice mail. So far, only the "IRS will put you in jail" guys have left a message on voicemail.
They're all from me

I've had so many calls of concern

So many people are worried about my pain

I've learned to speak Chinese

My auto warranty has been on the verge of expiring for the past five years

My windows are dirty and are in desperate need of cleaning

The IRS is coming to take me away

I've never felt so wanted

app is excellent and can be extremely funny....you can play back some of the calls that aren't a robot but wanna sell you solar panels or want a donation to some non-local PBA.....

Excellent app......a tad pricy, but totally worth it

Yup

I read the other day
Steve in South Jersey : 11/8/2018 1:04 pm : link
that next year some mobile carriers will use new a new caller authentication Stir/Shaken to cut down on “spoofing”—the trick spammers use to make their calls appear to come from a local number.

Possible partial iPhone solution
Ron from Ninerland : 11/8/2018 1:05 pm : link
You can block calls from anyone who us not a known contact by going to Settings -> Do Not Disturb . Choose Silence: While iPhone is locked. and Allow Calls From: All Contacts. This will block any junk calls while the phone is locked. Of course you have to remember to unset this if you're expecting a legitimate call from a non-contact.
Does anybody get one from an Asian lady ...?
short lease : 11/8/2018 1:19 pm : link
She is speaking in her native language and I have no idea what she is saying. And, I thinking - "why me?".

The Ad was clearly tailored for a particular community/group of people - why is my phone ringing?
I'm getting these also
montanagiant : 11/8/2018 1:20 pm : link
But then I really screwed up[ and went on Lending Tree about a possible refi on my home. So take 20 spam calls and add 20 more from mortgage co's

I get this one too. If only I spoke Mandarin I could fall for your scam.

... I don't get it Pete? Don't they have to pay for the calls? Why would they send me the call in Mandarin? Seems like a waste of money. I know it is probably a number's game ... but, how many people speak Mandarin in the U.S.?

Even the Royal Princes from Africa sent their letters and answered the phone in English.

They don’t use the phone system to call from China. The calls are routed over the internet via VOIP to a local exchange. So it costs them practically nothing. That’s why in general spam calls have exploded. Very few of them get results, but it costs so little to do it doesn’t matter.

That also explains the Mandarin call. They’re targeting people that speak it. Doesn’t make any difference that most people who get called don’t understand it.

Fantastic app. Very useful caller ID and terrific spam blocker. Even if a number slips thru, you report it and it blocks similar numbers.

My phone blocks about 7 a day.
I switched from Verizon to Comcast
shyster : 11/8/2018 5:14 pm : link
Mobile in late October. Kept same number and Comcast uses Verizon's network.

With Verizon, I had voicemail set up with my voice on the message.

I have not set up voicemail with Comcast.

My spam calls immediately went from about 10 a day to about one every two days.

Why, exactly, I don't know.
NOMOROBO seems too good to be true

Free for VOIP and it is available for my small local Vermont ISP.

Do you get a lot of email advertising / spam as a result of signing up? They have to make $ somehow.

I'll worry about cell phone robo calls, when we actually get coverage in this backwater.

Did you happen to change phones? Some phones, notably Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy, have software that sniffs out and either blocks or flags spam calls.
I have a landline
Pete in MD : 11/8/2018 5:48 pm : link
through google voice that I only use for my security system and to call into conference calls from my home office. It gets a ton of spam calls that I don’t answer because I know nobody has the number. Anyway, google voice automatically transcribes the voicemails and emails it to me. The Spanish and Chinese transcriptions are hilarious.
Robo Killer is great
jjgmrg901 : 11/8/2018 5:49 pm : link
I still get about 20 or so spam calls but they are all blocked by RoboKiller. Some of the answering clips I use are hysterical. I have one where it sounds like I am in the middle of a murder investigation. I know sounds childish but I like getting even with these people.

I did change phones. My old one, a Samsung, did not block or flag.

The new one, a Motorola, doesn't seem to block, as far as I can tell, but it did flag as spam one call from an 800 number.

I find it best to just give your CC#

And be done with it, they earned it with their persistence.
The spam calls have really created problems for me...
EricJ : 11/8/2018 8:04 pm : link
On my cell phone I get quite a few per day. On my office line it is now about 50% spam. So, I answer the phone differently and in a protective way. I just say "hello, can I help you". If it turns out to be a customer, they seem confused because they are expecting an introduction from a mortgage company. I don't want to say my name initially because I was duped once into saying "YES" when someone asked if this was Eric. They were recording me saying that to use for some scam later.
I get, on average, about 3 a day.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 11/8/2018 8:11 pm : link
And it's been going on for over a year. Before that, I had none. It's annoying AF.

I had never heard of this app and just looked it up. I am going to get it for sure. I can't wait to mess with these people. Thanks for sharing.

I'm going to get it and use the Seinfeld line..."I'm busy right now, let me get your home number and I'll call you back." ;-)

I got a spam call.
I was getting so many...
Dan in the Springs : 11/9/2018 9:41 am : link
I just defaulted my phone to silent always, then I would look through the list of missed calls when I had time to call people back. My voicemail got full and I had to ignore it.

But for several months now I'm getting none. I think it might have something to do with my phone - I'm on a Pixel first generation. I think they've got something figured out and are blocking them because I haven't seen a robo call in so long.
