NFT: Tree on my property- Advice needed

GMAN4LIFE : 11/9/2018 8:52 am
So we have this tree on my property. Its huge. Literally overcasts my house for the most part. Had to have been there for over 100 years. In any case, my wife wanted to get a quote for cutting off the branches as some small(yet heavy) branches are falling off. The tree cutter company believes the tree is dead and as a result some of the heavy branches are coming off. He is worried that the branches might hit someone and we will be held liable for this.

I'm no expert on tree so hopefully someone can correct me. If the tree were dead, why are leaves continously groowing on this tree?

but the quote to cut down the entire tree isnt terrible. Im just then worried about my energy bill now that my umbrella for my house will be cut down.

Thoughts and please ask if you need more info
There is a balance here...

between the truth about some branches possibly being dead AND a tree service looking to make a big sale.
we had a tree in what sounds like a similar state

spent some money lopping off some branches then the rest of the tree quickly died after.

For something like this you are better off not doing half measures

that i thought was dying

your best bet to know what really needs to be done with the tree is to call an arborist. Not only will he tell if the tree is dying or not, he will know how to save it for you.

if you call a tree cutting down company they are going to lie to you to make as much money as possible.

And by the way, the aroborist i called saved the tree i was having a problem with.
anyone know a good arborist(spelling) in northern nj?

I went
cjd2404 : 11/9/2018 9:13 am : link
to HS with the owner of this company, Tony and worked for him when he first started Friendly Tree. Granted that was 30 some odd years ago, and I haven't seen him or his brother John who I believe is the arborist for the company.

It's a free quote when I just looked him up and the rating seem good. I'd tell you to say Chris sent you, but at this point it might not mean much.

Totally agree here. We had a tree we thought was in trouble (leaking fluid - fear of bug infestation), the arborist came, said no it was ok and then had a person from UF look at it to confirm.
What type of tree is this.
DonQuixote : 11/9/2018 9:23 am : link
If it has green leaves, it is not dead. You don't just chop down a 100+ year old tree because stuff happens underneath it. If you need the tree down, I am not judging, but something is not adding up here.
Just Google Tree Service Companies in Your Area...

Then when you're on their website look for the "ISA Certified Arborist" logo.

Ask them for an estimate (most will do it for free) then go with the company you feel most comfortable with.

You can also find an ISA Certified Arborist at the following link:

a thread yrs ago here about a neighbors tree falling into a posters yard. Anybody remember that one?
What he may have meant

Is there is no saving the tree at this point. Is there considerable damage to the main trunk somewhere? Large trees can be almost hollow and rotted out at some point where they become a hazard yet still be producing leaves. Why not get a s cond tree service to give you another quote and second opinion? The last thing you want is that thing coming down onto your house during a storm. Large trees can potentially be real hazards to homes and people if not not properly managed so I wouldnt just make assumptions. Plus most tree services offer free quotes and never hurts to talke to two or three of them prior to making a decision. Good luck.

Personally, I always err on the side of safety and would have the tree taken down.

Just google map that and should have a foundation or company near you. The poster above listing certified arborist nailed it.

If tree is that old I hope you can save it!

Keep everyone updated.

Agree completely, if you are a hammer everything looks like a nail.
Estimates for tree work vary wildly
Knineteen : 11/9/2018 11:47 am : link
Get estimates from a bunch of companies and ask questions; all free advice. If every company is saying the tree is dead, then you have your answer. But remember, not all tree companies have licensed arborists, so make sure to ask the person giving the estimate/ advice.

Also, you are only held liable for tree damage if someone can prove you were negligent in allowing a dead tree to fester. IIRC, from a liability standpoint, trees are seen as an act of god (or being put there by god). They are not man-made structures.
As an FYI, I had a very nice red maple in my yard and every year it
Giants61 : 11/9/2018 12:09 pm : link
produced excellent canopy of leaves. One summer it dropped a large branch that fortunately landed in such a way that it did no damage. Looking closely at the area where the branch split from the trunk, I noticed a small area of black soft wood. A tree expert confirmed my suspicions and I had the tree taken down. The main trunk was quite hollow inside with the same black, soft wood I had seen at the branch cavity.

Saying its dead when it grows leaves, and not being fully insured for all consequences of tree work are screaming red flags
I had a tree taken down- same circumstances.

A big maple that provided shade for the from of our house. One tree guy said it was dying "from the inside out" and his recommendation was to take the tree down before it came down in storm. I went out and got three more opinions. All were the same. The tree looked healthy, but was diseased inside and the result was a weakening tree that would eventually fall down. We had the tree taken down last Wednesday.
I've had two large pine trees fall
eclipz928 : 11/9/2018 7:47 pm : link
Around my house over the past 3 years. The second one only had a couple dead branches - I thought it was healthy. Was very fortunate that my home (or a neighbor's) didn't get more damage than what it did.

My personal opinion: weather in this area is getting worse. Stronger storms. Longer periods of drought, and also longer stretches of rain and ground saturation. If you can afford it, and there's any ounce of doubt about it's health, I would take the step of removing any large tree that has the potential to crash through your house.
