Steelers offensive line

widmerseyebrow : 11/9/2018 11:04 am
LT: Alejandro Villanueva, UDFA cut by Eagles, signed with Steelers in 2014
LG: Ramon Foster, UDFA Steelers 2009
C: Maurkice Pouncey, 1st Round Steelers 2010
RG: David DeCastro, 1st Round Steelers 2012
RT: Marcus Gilbert, 2nd Round Steelers 2011

Such a stark contrast with our team in terms of drafting guys that are not only good enough to remain on the roster for multiple contracts, but can accumulate so many starts together. They got a little bit of luck with Villanueva, but credit to their personnel staff and coaches for seeing and developing a pro bowl LT in a castoff defensive end.

We've got a ways to go.
Basically what you're saying
pjcas18 : 11/9/2018 11:15 am : link
is the Steelers have 40% of their OL that wasn't even drafted and no 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round draft pick investment in the past 6 drafts.

They are all big
Chip : 11/9/2018 11:39 am : link
Unlike some of Reese guys Richburgh, Pugh, Jones who were smaller for OL in the NFL. Pouncey the only on under 310.
Kevin Colbert...

is a very good GM. Has been for a long time.

And the Steelers hire very good, dependable coaches - like Mike Munchak.

I will now sit back and enjoy as the Eli Army shows up to say BR is only as good as he is because of the talent around him...
Or 100% of their line originated with them
widmerseyebrow : 11/9/2018 11:42 am : link
I wouldn't count Villanueva (part of a rookie training camp as a DE with the Eagles) as a major free agent signing.

Considering hes never carried them, it's a valid argument.

They spent a greater part of his career with elite defenses.
I also think stability goes a long way
figgy2989 : 11/9/2018 11:56 am : link
These guys have been playing together for a while.
There can be no denying that BR has always been a very good QB
Giants61 : 11/9/2018 11:59 am : link
and having a very good team around him for many of his seasons only enhanced his effectiveness as a QB
Wow

A thread about the Steelers OL and Eli still gets shit on.

Pathetic
There's nothing special about that group....
dep026 : 11/9/2018 12:03 pm : link
Especially their center...
Yes BR extends plays when needed

The OL isnt all world but good

True. The O Line plays as one. Just like our 2005-2010 line.
Their OTs are not good pass blockers
TD : 11/9/2018 12:14 pm : link
But the unit is solid enough overall. It helps having a QB that can evade pressure, is hard to bring down and can stand tall and deliver or scramble and deliver. Ben R. is the QB type we should be looking for in the draft (easier said, I know).

I didn't use the word special anywhere, but "Nothing special" has yielded multiple pro bowls and a group that allows them to run their whole playbook. We're a long ways from that.

He's mocking a poster on another thread that made that assertion

haha I know. someone last night in the game threads said Pouncey was nothing special despite being a near HOF lock right now.
Giants picks...
sxdxca : 11/9/2018 12:56 pm : link
2013 Pugh LG 1st Rd Draft Pick, didn't work out
2014 Richburg C 2nd Rd Draft Pick, didn't work out
2015 Floweres LT 1st Rd Draft Pick, didn't work out
2018 Solder LT 62 Million Free Agent, didn't work out

There is a clear distinction between the two teams. The Giants have invested in there line, just like the Steelers have. The difference is Pittsburgh has hit on there picks, while the Giants have not...

The Giants reached or overpaid for everyone of those as well.

Has played 15 seasons, with different offensive lines, surrounding talent etc. But they have never had a losing season with him at the helm. By contrast when he’s been injured they are basically 500 (13-11). Big Ben elevates the talent around him.

So they have a winning record with usually a scrub QB playing? Wow. Goes to show how theres more than just QB play that goes into an offense. Thanks for proving my point all along.
The Steelers
PaulBlakeTSU : 11/9/2018 2:05 pm : link
have a better win-rate with Ben's backups than the Giants have had with Eli as the QB. Those back-ups:

Charlie Batch: 9 starts
Tommy Maddox: 2 starts
Dennis Dixon: 3 starts
Byron Leftwich: 1 start
Michael Vick: 3 starts
Landry Jones: 5 starts

Ben is a great QB who elevates talent around him. But, boy, has he been in an excellent situation on the whole.
Watch these highlights from last night....
Britt in VA : 11/9/2018 2:50 pm : link
Especially the pass blocking at the 1:30 mark.

When was the last time we saw anything resembling any of this?

The Steelers are one of the best drafting teams in the league. Arguably the best drafting team in the league over the last 20 odd years.

Look at how they’ve churned the WR position the last 15 years without burning premium picks or going nuts in FA. Look at what they’ve done at the RB position. Always committed to the OL and front 7 on defense.
BR is a solid HOF QB.

That’s true, but it doesn’t tell the entire story.

The Steelers have a luxury item with Roethlisberger at QB. His ability to make plays in and out of the pocket is extraordinary, especially for his size. He has skills that are transferable to any era.

This is a player on the verge of being one of the top ten QBs of all time. If gets a third SB, that will be sealed.

Isnt it ironic that Ben's best football came when the dominant line came? If you took Bens numbers from 2004-2012 and then look from 2013 on when their OL has been awesome.... you will see staggering results.
