I get that you have to say yes if you can acquire a player of Butler's caliber for Saric and Covington but they desperately need shooters and spacing. Covington was their best outside shooter and you can't play Butler, Simmons and Fultz all together.
Covington isnt their best outside shooter - Reddick is.
I just meant statistically this year but the point still holds if he's your second best shooter.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sixers use some more of those expiring contracts to add pieces. They have their "3" guy in Reddick. They have the traditional backup PG in McConnell and a couple nice prospects. However, they could turn guys like Muscala, Chandler, and Johnson into roster finisher pieces.
Someone like Fultz could be used to take on a guy another team doesn't believe fits.
I think the issue that Philly really has to decide now is whether they want a more traditional rebounding defender at the 4 or whether they want a guy to space the floor as a 3 and D 4 to open the paint for Embiid.
In fact, I think they two teams that might match up best for a deal next would be the Sixers and Kings. The Kings have more 4/5 guys than they can play and want expirings to keep cap space. The Sixers need 4s and maybe a good reserve 5 and have lots of expirings.
Amyway I LOVE Jimmy Buckets but this is a great deal for the wolves, far FAR superior to 4 garbage late 1st round picks (that would've been straight trade rape).
Didn't the Rockets offer FOUR first round picks???
And the Wolves settled for this?
much better deal than just 4 first round picks
Plus those picks are likely to be at bottom of the 1st.
Who's to say the Rockets will be good for that long?
Oh idk James Harden maybe. Plus maybe you missed the part about the picks being PROTECTED, would you take 4 first round picks for Jimmy Butler if it was GUARANTEED none of them would ever be top 10?
Even with a 10th pick is hard finding a player as good as Dario OR Cov.
4 first round picks is nice, but that's a long time to get the players on your team... by time you're making that 4th pick the 1st one's rookie deal is done.

No, dude he's saying that by the time you get that 4th player on the team, that could be 7 years later.

I get that, but should that really be a consideration? Okay, it's seven years later, but that's how you build a successful team long-term.
Kawhi and PG-13 are much cleaner fits with the Sixers than Jimmy is, but neither appears to have been available to Philly at this price or (in PG's case) in free agency last summer. You either wait another year for a better fit, or pay this price for Jimmy. Interesting choices.
Zach Lowe
@ZachLowe_NBA
Time will tell if Jimmy is the right specific target, and on how his next contract ages, but in theory, you cash in Saric and Covington for a player at Butler's level. We'll see how the shooting/chemistry/fit questions develop. Top of the East is a whole lot of fun.
Zach Lowe
@ZachLowe_NBA
A max for Butler would raise obvious questions about Fultz's long-term place in Philly, though there are lots of other Fultz questions to answer first. Philly will watch very carefully to see how all the personalities mesh.
that to a GM running a team, a draft pick that's 7 years out is essentially meaningless. Most GMs simply don't last that long. And Glen Taylor may not even be alive in 7 years.
The East is going to be a ton of fun this spring...

in minny is meaningless. He wanted out and knew he was gonna be traded. Why would he wear himself out? He will not be a problem in philly, IMO.
Until he realizes he is option 3.
He's actually option #2... but don't let that stand in the way of blurting nonsense.
Simmons is a good all around player but we all know.. he's not a big time scorer (0 jump shot)
Butler will average more points and more shots a game than Ben.
Lol. a new clown to BBI or returning dupe. Nonsense?
Ben Simmons is A-#1 on the 76ers and always will be as long as he is on the team. He has the ball in his hands every single possession and makes all the decisions. And when he doesnt... embiid does. Hence, Butler will be 3rd option.
I see some very scared Knicks fans on this thread trying to pretend this doesn't make the Sixers better.
As aSixers fan, I'm excited to see this.
I was growing weary of Dario and RoCo was very hit or miss
Wtf? Talk about trying to create a narrative that doesnt exist. Where are all the Knicks fans on this thread saying this doesnt make the Sisxers better? I see one or two that dont particularly like it for them, but this is hardly a bash the Sixers thread. dep is killing Butler (not the Sixers) and hes not a Knicks fan...

God damn Kevin Pelton with his knicks-homerism as well. Link - ( New Window )
who can score and is under a very team favorable contract. Minnesota had to deal Butler, so, under those circumstances, they did well. Also, if the Sixers do resign Butler, his new contract (which will be a max contract) will run until he is 35.
Hes an epic bitch. Complained last night he played 41 minutes despite him playing like dog shit. Wont play back to backs.
Hes gonna be a problem. Absolutely just a bad teammate.
I agree with this. Butler is going to think the Sixers are his team, and expect Embiid and Simmons to defer to him. And that's going to be a huge mistake.

Count me in as another one. Giants, Mets, Rangers and Sixers. Why Sixers? Because years of mismanagement with the Knicks including Isaiah Thomas and all the wonderful GMs. I live in South Jersey, so I finally transferred to one local team after 40 years.

In 4 years?
Teague
Covington
Wiggins
Gibson
Towns
Bench
Rose
Saric
Okioge
Tolliver
Dieng
Wouldnt shock me if Covington comes off the bench.

Right. And I didn't read anywhere that they would be protected first rounders. Maybe they would've been. Guess we'll never know.

2023 1st
2025 1st
Assuming no protection, Id take that trade any day. Now if there was protection, Id go with philly.
But I liked Saric as the stretch 4. Going to be hard to replace that. But he plays so small against playoff caliber bigs that it may be for the best.
Covington was invisible in the playoffs.
In order for this to work sixers need some more shooters and vets before playoffs. They have the assets to do it.
Until he realizes he is option 3.
Man. This move makes the East so much more compelling, though it was pretty damn compelling before today.
I love the NBA. NBA & NFL used to be neck & neck, but NBA has definitely drawn me in more of late.

Dont worry about scared Knicks fans. We are just fine. But we will look forward to Butler ruining another team and Embiids next injury.
I was a Dr. J fan and became a Sixers fan when he moved from the Nets to the Sixers. That stuck with me through good times and bad.
