Cutting Patrick Omameh just before Week 10's games should seal up for the Giants a 4th round 2019 compensatory pick for Justin Pugh.

Should Geno Smith also qualify for the formula in their favor, NYG may also get a 5th or 6th rounder for Devon Kennard.

Nick Korte (@nickkorte)
11/10/18, 12:39 PM
& #8294;The best thing would be for Smith to play some snaps--barring injury, either if he comes in late in blowout situations involving the Chargers, or LAC sits starters w/a playoff seed locked in.

Otherwise, NYG just has to hope he falls on the correct side of the qualification bubble.

History

NYT: Ron Johnson, Giants Running Back, Dies at 71

“Johnson was an All-American halfback at Michigan, and he was the first black player to be named a football captain there. He scored 19 rushing touchdowns in the 1968 season, including a five-touchdown, 347-yard game against Wisconsin; all are still university records.”

“As a rookie with the Cleveland Browns, who selected him in the first round of the 1969 draft, he scored seven touchdowns. The Browns traded him to the Giants in 1970 for receiver Homer Jones in a multiplayer deal.”

“The Giants had only two winning seasons between 1964 and 1980. Both came when Johnson achieved rushing milestones for the franchise.

“When I got to New York, the running backs were Tucker Frederickson and Ernie Koy,” he recalled in Ken Palmer’s “Game of My Life: Memorable Stories of Giants Football” (2007). “They were two white, big fullback-type guys. Everyone assumed that if you were black, you were fast. The Giants never really had anybody like that. So I was very, very well received when I got to New York.”
Johnson, 6 feet 1 inches and 205 pounds in his playing days, ran for 1,027 yards and eight touchdowns in 1970, his first season as a Giant. He also had 487 receiving yards, giving him a league-leading 1,514 yards from scrimmage. The Giants went 9-5. and he was voted to the All-Pro first team and the Pro Bowl.”

““He’s the best halfback in football today — period,” the Giants’ star quarterback Fran Tarkenton told The Associated Press after Johnson caught a touchdown pass, ran for another score and rushed for more than 130 yards in a 23-20 comeback victory over the Dallas Cowboys in November 1970.
“He catches the ball, he blocks, he runs inside and outside, he makes the big plays,” Tarkenton said.
After missing most of the 1971 season with an injury, Johnson ran for 1,182 yards and nine touchdowns in 1972, when he was again chosen for the Pro Bowl.
He set a Giants record for touchdowns in a game when he scored three times on passes from Tarkenton’s successor, Norm Snead, and once on a run in a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in October 1972. The Giants went 8-6 that season, then reverted to their losing ways.”

Ron Johnson’s Giant career

1970

“For several years the Giants have been trying to shore up their running attack. They have been especially anxious to find a back with speed to the outside. That's why they seem delighted with Ron Johnson, the 205-pound halfback who played for Cleveland last year and came to New York in the Homer Jones trade.”

"Almost a throw-in when the Giants obtained defensive tackle Jim Kanicki from Cleveland, Ron Johnson became an instant star for his new team. It was quite a year for the Johnson family as Ron's baseball-playing brother Alex won the American League batting crown and Ron broke the Giants' season rushing record with 1,027 yards, second best in the league. In addition, Ron led the league in pass catching for part of the season and finished eighth with 48 receptions. His combined rushing-receiving yardage, 1,514, topped the NFC
The 23-year-old former Michigan All-American isn't sprinter-fast, but he has the knack of finding holes and, once in the open, his deceptive moves and acceleration make him tough to catch.
At Cleveland he was Leroy Kelly's understudy. Last year, ironically, Ron outgained the great (and injured) Kelly by nearly 400 yards- and the feeling is that Johnson will get better with more experience."

Ron hurt his thigh in a pre-camp basketball game, needed surgery and missed the first six games of 1971. He came back for two games, hurt a knee and that also required surgery, sidelining him for the final six games.
