Is Lincoln Riley the next big HC candidate in NFL?

dep026 : 11/11/2018 8:54 am
Normally, I wouldnt consider college coaches who have immense success early in their coaching career and play with superior talent than that they usually go up against.... but what Oklahoma has done the past two seasons offensively is quite amazing.

45 PPG in 2017
49 PPG in 2018

I also understand they probably play in the worst conference in regards to defense.... however the numbers may be hard to ignore. I also understand that he has no interest in the NFL yet, but most college coaches say that during the year. However, there is an NFL team in our division that would desparately need a new coach and they have the $$$ to shell out to a hot shot rookie coach.

The one thing that stands out for Riley to me is that a lot of people attested his success last year to Mayfield. The number 1 pick, Heisman winner, etc.... however what Kyler Murray is doing this year is just as if not more impressive. Here's a kid who is basically just playing football for the fun of it. Hasnt started a game since 2015. And just comes out and puts up insane numbers. To me that is coaching, great schmes, and production. They lose their leading rusher week 1.... no problem.

I know Shurmur has been here for only a year, but I cant help but wonder if we took Herbert... why not match him with a great college, up and coming mind? I am sure he will be on the Browns and Cowboys short list...

So when Murray and the Sooners are lighting it up it’s Riley’s great coaching and schemes.

When Will Grier lights it up, however, it’s just him exploiting the miserable defenses of the B12.

I see.

And let’s not act like Murray is some walk on. Yes, he’s only 5’10” but he’s got a world class arm and brilliant speed. He was the 2014 Gatorade Football Player of the Year. And he was recently the 9th overall pick by the A’s in the 2018 MLB draft. The kid is a superb athlete.

So I don’t know about Riley yet. Indeed, he got a very good offensive mind. But he’s still working with the endless talent pool Stoops left behind. Let’s see him build the program with his own players first before we crown him this next great thing....IMO.

how bad the Big 12 is. And we are talking about Head Coaches, not QBs.

Murray hasnt started since 2015 and just comes in and dominates to the point where he is a top 2 Heisman candidate. That shows me good coaching and great schemes.

Hell, I think even Grier could be successful there!
I think I’m souring on

Offensive “guru” head coaches.

McAdoo. Shurmur. Hue. Etc etc...

If the offenses are going to struggle with an offensive minded HC might as well hire a defensive guy and at least be competent on one side of the ball.
Yes

Because now the NFL is in an offense drive era that emphasizes skill positions, creativity, passing.

In terms of him succeeding as an NFL coach there’s a lot of questions. NFL dynamics are much different. Competitive balance is much greater in NFL and depth issues are much more pronounced.

Will he be able to impose his offense?
Can he manage NFL veterans?
Can he adjust to NFL defenses?
Are his approaches and philosophy malleable?
Speaking of Grier, I just saw this video of his game against Tennessee

and was very impressed. He led his receivers well and threw it accurately and he has a nice quick release. I don't think he'll run the ball like Jones or Herbert, but he can scramble in the pocket. I'll have to see more of him.

Ira I was a big fan of Grier earlier in the year. Then I watched more of him and I became concerned. His offensive line is great and he often hangs onto the ball way too long. I am also a bit concerned about his age as he will be 24 before the draft. Is he playing well because he is 2-3 years older than his competition and he has all day to throw? I know the defenses he plays against are bad but that didn't concern me with Mayfield as I was immediately impressed with him and I became more so the more I watched him. With Grier it's the opposite.
Grier

also has really, really good WRs.

(DG was there to look at Sills IV as well.) I dont think we will have a chance to nab him though.
I think it is easier than ever

for college coaches to succeed in the NFL due to all the rule changes.
Murray is special. Imo he's even better than Mayfield.

And if he was 6'3" he'd be the top pick in the draft.

His athletic ability is off the charts. He was a top 10 pick in the recent MLB draft and the belief is that he is going to play baseball professionally rather than football.
Well, he got 4.5M to do so.
yatqb : 11/11/2018 11:28 am : link
He's very short, but I think he'd be a star in the NFL too given his speed, arm and decision making. You'd have to scheme your offense a bit, but the guy is special.
Good points on Grier, Jay. He does remind me a little of Mayfield.
Ira : 11/11/2018 11:49 am : link
I just watched another video (WV vs Texas). His accuracy is right up there with Mayfield. He does have good receivers and pretty good protection, but not as good as the Ohio State guy who so many people are ready to put in the HOF. I need to see more, but I like what I see so far.
As an OU fan I'm a bit predudiced
BillT : 11/11/2018 12:01 pm : link
But I think OU is a better gig than the Cowboys or most other NFL jobs. The top college coaches have better job security than NFL: coaches and as good a salary. Riley is essentially guaranteed 10, 15 years with OU, he doesn't have to put up with Jones and is making $5m/year. Or maybe he bolts at the end of the year.
Wasn't OU offense already great
bluepepper : 11/11/2018 1:44 pm : link
before he got there? I remember Sam Bradford and Landry Jones putting up huge numbers. Why is Riley so much better than whoever the OC was then?

So. Which good/great college program doesn't have really good WRs? Why that is a knock on Grier is just lazy.

Don’t you have to coach defense in the NFL too?
RobCarpenter : 11/11/2018 6:07 pm : link
Oklahoma’s D is horrible.

I would contend he hands onto the ball because he can. If your line give you the time why not exploit it, right?

The age "issue" is interesting. I don't know how to interpret that. It could be a sign of maturity - Grier is married with a baby daughter. So he may have his priorities right.

Good question! Not sure you do have to coach defense anymore in the NFL...lol. As the league becomes more like the Big 12 maybe it makes sense to hire a Big 12 coach.
