then that will surely be his top choice. The Jets are an interesting landing spot too. They have their young QB plus some very good young talent on defense. They need to rebuild that offense and add a pass rusher but they aren't in terrible shape.

Is a good fit for Cleveland
Ravens like to end it one year before they have to
BigBlueinChicago : 11/11/2018 3:01 pm : link
If you go back to the last time they did this in 2007, they fired Billick one year after they went 13-3 and lost their QB to injury during the season.

Ravens thought it was time. They found Harbaugh and he's given them 11 good years of work. They've only had 2 coaches in the last 20 years.

Harbaugh is still a very good coach. But this likely is more organization philosophy to move on now before they end up likely doing it next year anyway. Why prolong something you think should be over?

I forgot about Cleveland, that would be the most attractive opening after Green Bay. Cleveland is set up well for the future as Mayfield is looking like a franchise guy. Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, Nick Chubb, Larry Ogunjobi, Ogbah, David Njoku, Antonio Callaway, and Jarvis Landry is a good young core.
Thinking back on Harbaugh
BigBlueinChicago : 11/11/2018 3:17 pm : link
Look at the job he did.

He was a Special Teams coach who was not on many teams radar when he was hired.

If you told the fan base of a team we are hiring a man who has no experience as an offensive or defensive coordinator, or no previous head coaching experience, how do you think that would be received?

The Ravens had big personalities on its roster (Lewis, Reed, Suggs, Scott), mainly on defense. Not easy to do as a first timer who's never been a head coach and earn the respect of the team that has had success.

He delegates authority with the offense and defense and it has worked for him rather than be known as an "offensive" or "defensive" coach. Probably should have had 2 Super Bowl appearances instead of 1 after what happened in that Patriots game in 2011.

An argument can be made that if he applied for a first time HC job today with the resume he had coming into the Ravens job, he wouldn't be hired based on owners preferring "offense."

He is a coaching success story. Whatever happens, he showed that good coaches can come from anywhere if you are open to listening, having an open mind, and not having certain preferences before going into the process.

This ‘Fire Shurmur’ talk is ridiculous.

You have two options with Shurmur:

1. Based on his perceptions of players going into the season and the reality that came about, on top his own in-game decision making, which can be best described as "questionable" this season, you determine in advance that he is not the guy and you cut your losses before it becomes obvious and you end up doing the inevitable.

2. You give him 3 full years and see what happens. If you are conceding you are going to stink in 2019, why would you fire him after next season? It would make no sense.

You can make a case for either.

Everyone advocating for keeping Shurmur is doing it only by saying “he deserves another year”, that isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement or conviction in him. I’d be more inclined to have this view if he didn’t fail in Cleveland & if he didn’t look worse than McAdoo did last year in running the offense.

Most importantly though, the number of good head coaches is as low as it has ever been. Just look at the HC’s hired since 2014, the majority of them have already been fired. A guy like Harbaugh doesn’t come on the market often & he is a true CEO of a football team.

Level headed knows the game commands respect
relatively young mostly a winner .
My guess he will be highly sought after .
Maybe Shurmur needs more time considering what
inherited he hasn't shown exactly how good a leader he is
or is his system good enough his track record is poor .
if there was a choice its a no brainer to me .

Then what?

Cleveland seems to be the most likely destination for him.

Even if Shurmur is not a great coach I think he needs at least one more year, after another DG draft, to turn it around.

The ones who need to be fired are Hal Hunter and Shula.

If we draft a new QB

it's probably best to start fresh with a new coach, too. If we suck next year, which is likely, we'll probably fire Shurmur anyway, and the QB will have to learn a new offense in year two. Not ideal. Jets are in that boat with Bowles right now.

I feel this way EXACTLY. This is correct logic.

DG/PS represented a plan which involved a 2-3 year window with Eli. That has blown up in smoke.

The problem with this is the draft comes after you'd hire a new coaching staff. So unless we have the #1 pick and are completely sold on the QB that's there, this wouldn't make sense to do.

I think Shurmur is in a really shitty position. I'm indifferent on him staying but the guy was either forced to give it a go with Eli or signed up for it thinking he (and the line) would be a lot better.
When you hire a CEO
joeinpa : 11/11/2018 8:21 pm : link
To come and rescue your struggling corporation, , are you really suggesting he should be relieved of his responsibilities based on less than a full year in that role.

As a rule fans lack objectivity and make irrational statements about their team. But even by those standards the call for firing Shurmur after one season is absurd.

Go back to your cave. Or just stay in Hoboken. Basically the same thing.

The results aren't good this year, but he's working with a shitty hand. I like the way he carries himself, his actions so far and he isn't staying stagnant despite the team struggling. We'll see, but I think pulling the plug after one year is a mistake.

But as I said, that's mostly my gut. I certainly can see why people don't like him.

Was ever let go after this season and harbaugh was brought in, the comments on this thread and on other threads would be exactly the same. Just replace shurmurs name with harbaugh.

As far as mcadoo being better than shurmur. In what area? Mcadoo repeatedly called out players in the media while he coddled others. Shurmur does not call out any players publicly.

Mcadoo could not handle the media. Shurmur handles them a lot better

We can at least move the ball under shurmur to give the defense a breather from time to time. Mcadoo was consistently 3 and out.

Shurmur is not afraid to make changes. The only thing mcadoo ever changed was his hairdo.

Mcadoo was way over his head

In a season and 2/3 Mcadoo has more wins than PS has in 4+ years of coaching. Mcadoo also has more seasons with a winning record than PS.

His 2 years as OC here were fantastic, Admittedly his final year was awful, but I believe this year to be worse and the whole staff was changed, and I had some hope things would turn around.

Mcadoo was Saddled with the worse D coordinator in football, the worse Special teams coordinator in football and an OC who never ran the WCO. How did you expect him to succeed?
As for changes, he wanted Eli out. Something I see posted every day here THIS year as something that should happen.

I think PS might be a Norv Turner type. Great OC, but not head coaching material.

but Harbaugh isn't necessarily an upgrade either. His Ravens teams have been wildly inconsistent at times, and that falls upon the HC.

Wow, there is so much wrong with everything you said.

Where do you even get shurmur and 4+ years of coaching. He coached 2 years in cleveland and this is his first year here. Mcadoo has more wins not because of his offensive prowess, but because of what you deemed as the worse defensive coordinator in football. More winning seasons? Again 2 years for each coach, that's hardly a statement. Mcadoo called his own plays, and he promoted Mike Sullivan to offensive coordinator. He wasn't saddled with anything.

Shurmur got more out of the likes of weeden and McCoy as a head coach than mcadoo could ever dream.

Shurmur and Gettleman just got in the door and have only begun to rebuild this roster from what Reese destroyed in 6 years of bad drafting.

This year is bad, but at least they are making changes and building something instead of mcadoo constantly trotting out the same garbage week after week with nothing changing!!

OK sure 2+ years, you're right I count each team he has coached for, and din't really factor in the full season thing.
Do you really think he promoted Sullivan or it was done for him? When was the last Head Coach who didn't replace 2 of 3 coordinators (who were both garbage) and promoted an internal candidate for the last....I'll wait.
He never stood a chance. The whole DG and PS are just starting this is nonsense too. If we all know Reese was a problem, then he was a problem for Mac also.

PS calls his own plays too, not sure I see your point. I mean I know he is calling these world beater plays that Mac wasn't , but..oh wait there is no but.
Mac never coached McCoy or Weeden. If you mean he can't coach a QB up, let me know where he got that chance. Since I can't think of one. I'll just reserve judgement on that one.
