NGT: Syracuse football

dpinzow : 11/11/2018 4:50 pm
I think Dino Babers deserves votes for national coach of the year in CFB. He's led a Syracuse team that is not a top 25 team based on talent to #12 in both national polls, with an outside shot at a New Year's Day bowl. That program was virtually dead for a long time and it's very hard to recruit there, which makes their resurgence all the more astounding. I haven't seen a lot of their games aside from their heartbreaker at Clemson and their blowout win vs. NC State, but if anybody watches them on a regular basis, what other factors led to them being a team to watch on the national stage again?
Been an exciting team to watch
bigblue5611_2 : 11/11/2018 4:58 pm : link
A couple plays away from being undefeated.

Two big factors I can think of are the pass rush, Alton Robinson has been a huge help there, and Dungey. Dungey is just a gamer, not the best QB out there and will make some mistakes, but a great athlete...great runner, good arm.
The offense is explosive Babers has indeed done well.
Snifflenick : 11/11/2018 4:59 pm : link
What are some opinions of Eric Dungey and his chance of being a successful NFL quarterback?
Alum here, so biased
VTDAD : 11/11/2018 5:01 pm : link
Good pass rush and third down defense, Upperclassmen leaders, Senior Dungey is a special college QB and has been healthy (fingers crossed), very good kicker / special teams, plus turnovers, Dome field advantage, Full-time hurry-up offense. Depth at RB, QB

Probably depend on medicals and needs a certain system to be highly successful
If you haven't watched them more than twice
DCOrange : 11/11/2018 5:14 pm : link
How do you know the talent is not Top 25? Their talent is much better than you give them credit for, especially at key positions like QB, OL, DL and K. And they were coached up to be the best special teams and near the top at 3rd down stops. Best of all their best QB is probably the back-up who will only be a sophomore, their best RB is probably the transfer from Oklahoma sitting out this year and their best WR is probably the transfer from Michigan State who is sitting out this year. For the first time in decades the back ups who replace the seniors will probably be improvements in almost every case. Now they need to jump start this year's recruiting as it has lagged despite the great year.

They are an illegal procedure and an OT game away from being undefeated.

Agreed Dino deserves national recognition.

Don't get me wrong, I love to watch Dungey... decent arm, punishing dangerous runner (to opponents and himself), and one big, tough old school MF. But his pro prospects are very limited IMHO. And his aggressive style will get him murdered against NFL level defenders.
This team could easily be 10-0 right now
B in ALB : 11/11/2018 5:26 pm : link
I've said it before. As far as talent, they are very underrated talent-wise. They've got some absolute horses on both sides of the line, two tackling machines at LB, a ballhawk safety, a four-headed rushing attack to include a 285 pound fullback/TE and another TE in Pierce who can ball. All that, plus two really good QBs, and they're pretty solid from a talent perspective.

My fear is that Babers jumps ship at some point. That would be a nightmare scenario. But maybe he's sick of moving all over the country - he's coached for what - 20+ schools at this point?

Interestingly enough, Coda Martin, their starting RT, is married to his daughter. Martin is from Central NY and his dad is also on the staff. So maybe Babers decides to stay for a while. He's done an amazing job.

And he called it - Year 3 would be the year we see significant improvement and this team being back on the national stage. His players love him, fans love him and the media absolutely adores the guy. Coach of the Year is a possibility if they somehow win out.
Nice to see them

As part of the national picture again

Demonstrates how an elite coach can turn things around, even in programs where it seems like an impossible task.

Penn State and Syracuse had a great rivalry back in the day.
They certainly did

Will Syracuse pay to keep him if bigger schools with deep pockets come calling?

Never heard of him before Syracuse. After seeing him interviewed and seeing the team a few times the last few years you could see he has it. B might be right and he stays put. I could also see some big time programs giving him a call as well.

Who are the WR and RB transfers? They’ll have a strong WR group returning in Riley, Johnson, and Harris -awesome to hear they’ll have a fourth.

I can see him considering leaving after this year, 2020 for sure. He’s a west coast guy and I just can’t see him settling down here in Syracuse. I have to think if USC or someone similar comes calling he’s gone. No chance he takes the Louisville job, that’s no upgrade IMO.

Probably all Brohm for them
Been watching them all season on tv, then in person this past Friday.
Phil in Joisey : 11/11/2018 7:06 pm : link
Their overall talent is pretty damn good. Impressive offensive line especially. The defense surrenders points, but their third down holds are frequent.
I love Dungey as a college q.b. but don't think he'll be
much in the NFL. Probably get drafted in the 6th round or so, but he'll have to improve his accuracy quite a bit to have an NFL career.
Really hope that Coach Babers is with us for a while.
His leaving would probably set the program backwards at a time when the momentum is all forward. It would be a
shame.
At the season's beginning I passed on tickets for this
Saturday's Notre Dame game fearing a slaughter. Now decent tix are $350 and up and I'm hoping we can pull
off the upset.
It's been a wonderful football season and I'm looking
forward to an even better basketball season.

Transferred mid season and missed the Gator Bowl in 95. No Citrus Bowl.

You're correct, my mistake, honestly meant to say a lateral step. Obviously, Louisville has been a far better program over the last 15 years, but i'd argue given the current state of the UL program and the recent resurgence of Syracuse, that a move by Dino from SU to UL would be pretty much a lateral one (if the money is the same).

There's you're tier one jobs (USC, ND, Bama, and a dozen or so other schools) and Cuse and Louisville would be somewhere in the next tear, likely the bottom IMO.

Actually they have 3 transfers now,
RollBlue : 11/12/2018 12:33 pm : link
all former 4 star recruits, Abdul Adams RB - OKL, and Trishton Jackson WR - MSU - both eligible next year. Last week got James Hudson, OL Michigan - won't be eligible until 2020.

Their success this year is primarily due to great offense, finally have a good OL, and great special teams. The defense can get after the passer, but struggle containing the ground game, and usually blow 1-2 assignments per game that give up big plays.

B, I believe Martin is originally from Texas - lives in Dino's basement this year after marrying his daughter Jasmine back in the Spring.

Too bad this game is at Yankee Stadium. Someone is going to get hurt running a fade into one of those end zone corners. Game should be at ND stadium (just like the previous games shouldve been @Cuse rather than MetLife). Both ND and Cuse's AD (at the time) really fucked this up.

I have been sceptical of the team this year, mostly due to their defense...but that seems to be a disease that has afflicted 90% of college football.

Dungey seems a little bit like Taysom Hill who has carved out an interesting niche position in New Orleans. He'd have to be drafted (or signed if undrafted) by a team with a creative offensive coordinator/staff.

The Louisville athletic program is a sewer and recruits know it.

Meanwhile, Cuse continues to improve its recruiting ten fold, is sinking money into tons of improvements at Manley and the Dome is going thru a major renovation shortly. Plus, they have a really good coach and excellent recruiter.
