I think the announcers said it best, the issue was the additional force at the very end even though QB had obviously thrown the ball. Had Carter not added that extra oomph at the end it likely doesn’t get flagged. Personally I don’t like the new rule, but is clear that league brass want to cut down the extra force driving into the ground when QB is not going to throw while parallel with the ground.
But, but, he tackled the QB. That's a penalty now, isn't it?
Effin NFL.
Fighting through an OT, and hitting the QB as the ball is coming out and then calling a penalty for hitting too hard? Does this league really think 260 lbers can just stop their momentum? apparently so.
In a game of split seconds, to expect a rushing player to pull up microseconds before or during the tackle is moronic.
Yet a WR lowers his head to make a tackle (clear violation of the rule) after the INT and no call even though he knocked himself out.
RE: The way they are calling roughing the passer this year Â
Have to agree. The tackle did look a little violent at the end. He will learn to relax after the initial contact. Unfortunately that will lose him some tackles but that is the new rule. I do have to say that this league without QB's would suck so I cant blame them

I disagree. I thought he was flagged for going high. Didn't get him in the helmet but he was close and wrapped him up just below the neck. Either way, that's a 50-50 call this year.
Speaking of going high, I thought the Ogletree flag was bull, but if they're calling that then I'm not sure how Goodwin doesn't get flagged for leading with his helmet 2 plays later. The 'tackle' on Goodson was exactly what they're trying to eliminate.

Excellent post. Not sure that plying football is allowed anymore if you can't hit the QB as he is releasing the ball. I personally don't want any Vince Young vs. Kiwi plays ever again. Get him down!
Agreed. It's the body weight. He had the majority of his body weight on top of the QB as he took him to the ground. It's roughing. I hate the rule, but it was an appropriate flag.
Absolutely. A perfectly clean tackle and he didn’t land on him either. Terrible call.
He didn't land on him?
Uh ...
Hey, I don't like the rule, myself. But if you're calling it "by the rule," it was a penalty, pretty clearly. You have to let up a bit and not drive the guy into the dirt. Carter hit him hard and clean, then finished all the way through, which is now a no-no. Sucks, but thta's the deal.
Remember when Wentz was driven into the ground by OV, and he went out of the game for a concussion? It was a sack, but OV drove him into the ground....
Not intentional by Carter, but a high tackle like that is going to drive a qb into the ground every time.....and of course, you compare that to the patty cake push by Wynn on Cam Newton, and you have to shake your head....

Incorrect, they just changed the rule prior to this year. The Carter hit was clean until the contact with the ground. You can't land or continue with most of your body weight on the QB through the ground.
And yes, defenders actually can roll off and finish the tackle without doing so.
The point of emphasis was on players driving QBs in to the ground with the full weight of their body (basically chest-to-chest). That didn't happen on that play.

Except Carter didn't land or continue with most of his body weight on Mullens. He had one arm wrapped around him up high and had his body off to the side.
Looked to me to be perfectly fine by rule with Carter only being guilty of being too strong for Mullens and overpowered him with just the one arm wrapped around him as he took him to the ground.
This is exactly what I was thinking. All of the above.
Completely understandable

No shit. Clock management continues to be terrible.

Agreed. The rule itself is bullshit and subjective, but given what they've been calling this year, the Carter flag was the right call.

He did land on him and with emphasis. It's the rule such as it is and I don't think it was a bad call.
Like this?
