NFT: Best-Buy installed dishwasher leaking and ceiling damage

DC Gmen Fan : 11/13/2018 9:10 am
In July we purchased an appliance suite through Best Buy and purchased GeekSquad protection.

This morning, my wife noticed dripping on the first floor ceiling and a bubble under the dishwasher. We also noticed hardwood floor discoloration next to the dishwasher.

I tracked the issue to a leaky fitting on the dishwasher itself and a pool of water that has likely been under it for some time and is now dripping through the first floor ceiling creating stains and seams.

I plan on calling best buy today and telling them, but how would BBI suggest I go about getting them to pay for the water damage, ceiling/floor repair, and perhaps an inspection of the area where the water could be pooling?

Thanks
Sounds expensive

You might consider a drain pan on the next one. I’ve had a similar issue with the major leak
I would do the following:

1. Ask politely.

2. If they refuse, send a certified letter and work up the chain.

3. If still no resolution, either get an attorney to send a certified letter and pursue small claims action OR file the claim itself.
You're probably screwed

Don't ask me how I know.

You want to call these guys first - they're the company that BB outsources these installations to:

Sedgewick (800) 620-7409

Calmly explain what happened. The fact that you had it installed in July and you found the damage in November will have them playing the redirect game, anywhere from 'it's a problem for the manufacturer' to 'you must have moved it'.

The terms and conditions documents on installs are so long and crazy, your chances of ever getting out of them in court are slim to none. Hopefully they'll throw you a few hundred bucks and write it off onto their insurance, but they will seriously frustrate you first. Good luck.
good luck

best buy and geek squad are fucking awful. I had a problem that went on for 10 months that neither wanted to take responsibility for. Their insurances are terrible and there are so many small printed things that people never see.

Ill never buy another product from either of them. Ill be shocked if they give you a dime back or dont charge you for something extra.
Update

so because the leak is at the water line connection to the dishwasher, they have to process the claim through the installer, and then like was mentioned earlier, Sedgewick for a proprty damage claim. I have pictures and video of the leak as well as the damage. They will want those with the claim. Stay tuned

They installed it. They (subcontractor) are responsible for it. It might take some follow up but it is clear cut.

Ehhhhhhhh. These fuckin suck for a few reasons. First, as stated above, their claim process is going to be a nightmare and a giant waste of time. Ideally, just get a attorney, sue Best Buy in local court, let them implead the contractors. The problem is, the cost benefit is going to be iffy. I love helping folks, but when people bring me things too big for local court, but too small to justify an action in Supreme Court, once you pay the attorney, what's left? Factoring in the discount you're going to have to give to settle it and/or the uncertainty of going to decision on the merits... ugh. Its a mess.

Good luck. But figure out your damages first and let that guide your decisionmaking. I know you hate to get your own carrier involved, but if you're in that $8-12k range in damages, maybe bite the bullet and see if they'll cover it.

FYI the company who came out to do the repairs was great.

Said get an estimate for the floor/ceiling water damage and they will make it right. It's a small local company and it was the owner who came out so I'm encouraged by this.

OMG, customer service? Probably a good thing it was a small local company - they live and die by recommendations and they have insurance.

Hope they do right by you DC. Sorry to hear about the damage.
