(1) I don’t know whether it was the return of Chad Wheeler, the installment of Jamon Brown at RG or San Fran’s pass rush sucks like ours… but Eli had a comfortable pocket last night;
(2) Why this same line cannot run block for shit is beyond my comprehension and requires serious attention this off-season. We are wasting the talents of Saquon Barkley with this front;
(3) Speaking of Saquon Barkley, the sideline commentator, Booger McFarland, does not know what he is talking about when he blamed Barkley for not just taking "three yards" and choosing instead to bounce it outside. What three yards is this blabbing head talking about? Is he actually watching the game? There are no holes. Barkley is bouncing outside because our entire interior -- from tackle to tackle -- is cold-cocked at the snap;
(4) Add a premium edge rusher (or two) to our list of desperate needs come Draft/Free Agent time. Nick Mullens had a crazy amount of time to scan the field. But don’t discount the effort of Lorenzo Carter, who was very active and who will IMO be a difference-maker next season;
(5) I don’t think Matt Breida runs for so many cut-back yards with Snacks Harrison in the middle;
(6) Landon Collins was very active with several big hits, but why would the Giants throw a lot of money at this guy just because he’s a good tackler? He was exposed all night long by George Kittle. How does a defense overcome the coverage skills of Collins and Ogletree? Having both on the field at the same time is scary;
(7) Giants caught two big breaks on game-winning TD. Penalties happen like that against shit teams. We know all about that… and so do 49er fans;
(8) Watching that beautiful route by a wide-open Evan Engram and the end-around by Sterling Shepard, it looked like I was watching the LA Rams offense going to work;
(9) B.J. Goodson was very active and in the right place... twice! Without his 2 INTs, the Giants fly back to New Jersey 1-8;
(10) I don't understand all the debate on BBI about Eli Manning? He had good protection and he made some nice throws. He also missed a TD to OBJ. So, what? We all wish Eli well, but he's not in our future plans. IMO, he will retire at the end of this season.
However, I’m not the best to judge these matters. I didn’t think Carters personal foul was that bad. I didn’t see him pile the qb into the ground. He grabbed him as he threw the ball.....just didn’t let up....I don’t see how that is a penalty without showing he pile drived him.
Also, BS call on Giants for tackling with Shoulder.
NFL really does suck these days with the Refs and inconsistent calls.
For a first game, Brown did ok....was disappointed in his run blocking.....I expected more from what I read on BBI about him....fourth quarter he did not look too good in pass blocking....probably gassed....
There is no one on this team that can run block.....it's amazing the yardage SB gets, basically on his own....
As for Barkley, please Eli, do not check down to him, 5 yards behind the LOS.....send him out of the backfield, and make him run at a LB like Whitten did as a TE....it was so simple...he would run at a TE, get him to lean one way and break another....could do that all day with SB.....
There were some runs that Barkley had that he could have taken the inside cut and had a few yards instead of trying to break off tackle and get a bigger gain (and instead get met behind the LoS for a loss).
I think that's part of the adjustment for Barkley - in college, those runs would be for gains far more often than in the NFL, where the average athleticism is much higher. By and large, the OL didn't do a great job run blocking last night, but they opened a few holes for him, and he passed on at least a couple of them in search of bigger gains outside.
Overall though, Barkley did a good job last night taking what the D gave him and (IMO) has done a much better job gaining those 3-4 yards rather than looking to bounce it as the season's progressed.
That said, SF's tackling last night was outstanding, especially by their CBs and safeties on the outside and in the open field. Seemed like the first time this year where Barkley wasn't making 2-3 guys miss on every play.

What I don't get is how they flag that tackling with the shoulder, but then ignore the leading with the helmet literally 2 plays later!
Why can't he just stand on on the sideline like every other JAG with a microphone?
Why is he there at all? God forbid Lisa Salter should have the job all to herself- ya gotta share it with an ex-player meathead I guess. For every Pam Oliver you need a Tony Siragusa.
I can't figure it out.
The PI on Beckham was maybe 50-50 especially since Beckham didn't even appear to be expecting the ball, but there was a lot of contact initiated by the CB there, all of it beyond 5 yards.

I'd get rid of both, but at least in Booger's case he's actually adding commentary (albeit shitty commentary). Siragusa and the other sideline reporters rarely provide(d) anything other than repeating some stock responses from the coaches after halftime.
And if they want Booger for a 3rd announcer (needed because Witten sucks?), then just put all 3 in the booth.
Giants ol was not a complete shit show. Odell is good. Their qb wasn't horrible. Lost season for SF with Jimmy g hurt. Lost season for nyg with our various dysfunctionality.
Audience tuning in for gambling implications mostly.
The whole defensive game plan was perplexing. Why we continue to put Ogletree in a position where he has coverage responsibilities is beyond me. We also did little blitzing against this kid who likely would have struggled had we sent some additional pressure.
And on pass plays, Snack would have pushed Richmond back into the quarterback!
Quote:
in the game during the last minute drive by the 49ers? He sucks in coverage and with no time outs the 49ers more than likely were not going to run any draws or inside screens. Why they didn't blitz the hell out of Mullens on that last drive is also beyond me. The 49ers moved down to the Giants' 20. The freakin' 20! The last play of the game was badly over thrown. Why? Because they blitzed and Mullens panicked.

Odd thing is he kind of excelled at it with the Rams, hence the reason from the trade. I don't know if its our scheme, talent around him or the fact that he's just not reading the plays properly?! Whatever it is, it has to get fixed moving forward or this will be another wasted trade. Ogletree to me looks like another JAG and not a leader on this Defense.
We are weak up front on the o-line Barkley will learn
when to turn it up and get what he can .Least of our worries
Collins is still a solid defender he is a bit of a liability
in coverage . We need a FS and a tackling machine at LB
as well as a stud pass rusher .
Good to see a win losing breeds losing
Maybe we found something in Brown . I don't expect Soldier
to have another bad season next year he can hold the fort
down until we draft a replacement I wouldn't be shocked
if the took the Bama LT at #1 and another BPA lineman at #2
Sounds like Eli had a better pocket but the run game still not there .
The few times I noticed him run those routes, I could almost see the "OH SHIT" reaction from the defensive players that had him pegged for the flats.
Last night Saquon broke one cutback run for a big gain early, then on another attempt Sherman kept his contain well and buried Saquon for a loss. Booger jumped on this as evidence Saquon “just needs to take his 4 yards, blah blah blah!”
In fact, for most of his runs last night, Saquon did take what (if any) yards were available, including a handful of 1-4 yard gains. He’s a rookie with insane ability who’s still learning how to play the NFL game, and I think he’s already showing progress with this common criticism.
But it’s too much to expect a fat dumb slug like Booger to actually do his homework and put some thought into his commentary - he simply read this criticism of Saquon somewhere and jumped all over it the one time Saquon did it.
Play-action is just deadly with SB if they buy the run, I think. Again, I need to rewatch and do some more analysis, but that was my immediate thoughts watching the game.

This too.
Yes Dalvin is not Snacks, but I thought Breida made a lot of his yards on the edge and the OLBs were not there.
Hard to fault Eli too much, but he still makes some of the dumbest throws despite being a starter for over 14 years. He forces too many balls in the short middle too hastily. That bomb to Odell he just threw too high - WTF was that? He has plenty of arm and on that one he looked like he purposely tried to throw it to have Odell run under it. You could see he purposely gave it a higher than usual trajectory.
And sorry, he just cannot throw a screen pass. Yet the lob to Odell for the TD and the missile to Shepard were wonderful passes.
