No doubt and his cutbacks were huge but more than not having Snacks, I think our inside LBs sucked and over ran a lot of plays and flat out whiffed on others.
Both Shanahan's always seem able to coach a team to effectively run the ball. Like to keep them under a 100 yards but not like they were running all over us either imo.
Who else noticed that SF made zero attempts to run a KO back, even when it landed rather shallow in the EZ?
Looked like it was by design
As it should be. With a touchback at the 25, teams really shouldn't ever try to return a KO even shallow in the end zone unless the kick coverage is just absolutely abysmal (I mean like players falling down kind of bad).

I think the odds are better to take the ball at the 25 than try and run it out.
We got lucky on one big return, but on another we came up short of the 25 and with a hold added in we started at the 8.
Average kickoff return league-wise is probably around 22-23 yards, so taking one out of the end zone is generally a lose proposition.
It would appear that a lot of returners are told to not run them back. Link - ( New Window )
Agree with you guys re KO returns. I just wonder Â
His two INTs, Goodson took some bad angles in run support, as did our OLBs and Ogletree. Those quick inside runs require gap discipline and awareness and we lacked it on his bigger runs. These are bang bang type plays and one false step opens a hole those little shifty RBs. Our LBs weren't playing well vs the run and our DEs weren't holding the POA well at all.
it seemed like the linebackers were consistently blocked or out of position.
I know we hone in on our players but he’s averaging 5.6 YPC and overbthe first 6 games was something like 7 YPC. In other words, everyone LBers haven’t had much success against him. Just trying to put this in perspective a bit.
but you can't have that kind of running success without a great performance by your center. He seems to be a great fit for Shanahan's system which requires more mobility than strength.
Of the front 7, I like what Carter looks like, and I like the two tackles, but they were Invisible for Most of the night. Few Stunts...nothing successful from Oliier or any edge rusher... the inside rush was totally stoned.
Solid effort-wise all around...they were somewhat more fortunate than good.
But he’s a great back. I still think his teammate (and also former Eagle) Jerrick McKinnon is still the better back IMO. Sucks he’s out for the season. But kudos to Kyle for doubling up!!
should have been called back because blocker was clearly holding Jenkins.
Breida is a good back. Lot of times if you just watch his previous runs you can see the talent. Agree also about defenders overrunning plays. And, I think I recall Riley taking a bad angle on one play.
But, in short - they have a good running game. And Shanahan is pretty smart.
that RBs are in great supply. He’s an undrafted rookie from Georgia Southern. Leads the league in runs of 20 yards or >. And he continues to be productive despite San Fran being down to their third QB of the year.

Hopefully the Giants will draft a good RB in the mid to late rounds to help take some carries away from Barkley in order to keep him fresh.

Their running game is ranked #4 but is really probably as good as anybody in the NFL.
So, I really think it was a matter of their being good rather than the D not stopping the run
Because the risk of losing 5 yards and only getting to the 20 is worth it if you can break one to the 50.

In the beginning of the game thread I said I was concerned about Breida.

Then, the whole instant to the line thing in runs. That as well as a way to negate today's dl modes.
That game showed it.
The Falcons held on to their OL coach when shanny left. Kick tires as OC ?

They have a very good offensive line. McGlinchey is the top rated rookie OT.
