NFT: Knicks Chat: Speculation on Durant's top 3 destinations

DanMetroMan : 11/14/2018 9:43 am
Could be 100% BS but the whispers floating around are that NYK/WAS as at the top of Durant's list and that the Sixers are also very high which is one reason they may not want to take on Courtney Lee, which would help the Knicks shot at Durant.

-Everyone is denying the report Green mentioned Durant's FA status (doesn't mean it's untrue) but multiple reports say Green called Durant a "bitch" repeatedly during their fight.

but the team that needs to tear it down...

Michael Jordan and the Charlotte. I just dont see this team going anywhere anytime soon. They will be consistently fighting for an 8th seed and need to burn it down and start over. Get rid of Williams and Zellner. Play the kids more.

I actually think trading Batum is a must since he will net a good return. Also, they should be open trading Kemba. While a good player - he is going to want huge money after the year, and he just isnt worth it. He is a good 3rd option for a winning team.... but he is not good enough to carry a team in a playoff series.

Batum to 76ers would be interesting.
Kemba to SA would be interesting as well.
Hmm..

of project. Maybe if KP came back early and we made a run at the playoffs, maybe. This team will be much closer to the #1 pick than it will the playoffs. We are a year or two from enticing a star, IMO.

were the lakers close to a championship when they got lebron?

you could argue the combo of durant and kp is 1 of the top in the east, Hardaway as your 3rd guy until Knox is ready plus another top 5 pick it is a good young core...

also wizards and sixers can not sign durant
nygiants16 : 11/14/2018 10:00 am : link
both would not have the cap space unless the sixers let butler walk...

wizards have porter, beal, and wall making 92 million, add 16 to that for mahimi
Washington
DanMetroMan : 11/14/2018 10:01 am : link
makes a lot more sense than people give them credit for. They are his home town team, already have Wall/Beal in place. He wouldn't look like his ring chasing when the team is 4-9 but those 3 + the guys who sign with teams who ARE ring chasing and suddenly they are very, very interesting. I assume they have to move salaries like Porter Jr. etc but I don't think it's an outlandish option... if Brooks last all season he is also another positive for Washington as Durant has openly praised Brooks in the past.
Yeah, Sixers and Wizards seem impossible from a cap standpoint.

Porter is off to a rough start but the 3 seasons prior .152 WS/48 and he's only 25, I'm sure there would be a market especially if the Wizards pick high, they could use the pick to move salary.

that was a capped out (e.g. Wizards) the teams could always work out a sign-and-trade. That's something GS would likely prefer as they're going to be limited in what they can do to replace KD due to their own cap concerns if he leaves.

sure they could. There's many different permutations of how they could build their roster before and after a potential sign-and-trade.

They couldnt do it, once you are hard capped you can not go over even for a vet minimum contract, that means no draft picks and no vet ring chasers

I guess that's possible? He could do a lot of things. Kawhi could stay in Toronto like George stayed in OKC. Ballmer is certainly more of an asset in recruiting than Jimmy Dolan, that's for sure.

I guess wear and tear is a concern for any athlete in his thirties, but Durant is unguardable because he's 6'11" and can get his shot over anyone. He'll rely on that even if he loses a step.

there's a million different ways to manipulate a roster to make it happen. And there's like 10 teams in the league that hard capped RIGHT NOW. You make it sound like it's a death sentence.
I think there are several reason why Durant could consider the Knicks
blueblood : 11/14/2018 10:57 am : link
And I am not saying he is coming. I am saying there is reasoning.

1) Durant has been said to be a player that is very aware of his legacy in the NBA. Winning ONE championship in NY would be bigger in terms of legacy that winning three in Oaktown because New York hasnt won in so long and NYC is the mecca of basketball. NY is first and foremost a basketball town. Players are well aware of this.

2) The Knicks are finally looking like a functional basketball operation. Mills, Perry and Fizdale come off as competent, professional and having a plan. Perry and Fizdale are respected in the league in terms of having a basketball background.

3) The Knicks finally have money and draft picks going forward. This was not the case in years past. They were always close to being capped out and had to thrown in picks just to make mediocre moves. This is no longer the case. The Knicks will have more money going forward and they own all their first round picks.

4) There is something of a nucleus of talent. Frankie Smokes already plays elite defense as a guard. Big Mitch is only going to improve. Knox looks like he will continue to develop. Alonzo Trier is a STEAL !!!! OMG !!!!! A Healthy KP will only add to the attraction. ThJr has his limitation but becomes a third option with Durant on the team at best.. and is moveable in two years with an expiring contract.

5) The Knicks being bad is a good thing. They will play the rookies more to give them more burn. They will get the playing and development they desperately need. They will also lose games. This will give the Knicks a very good shot at Zion, Reddish or Barnett.

6) KD's business partner is from NY and an Avid Knicks Fan. NY has a plethora of business opportunity from him, building his brand and extending it even PAST basketball.

7) Scott Perry was a part of the front office that drafted him in Seattle.

8) Knicks assistant Royal Ivey is a former teammate and friend of Durant.

9) Durant knows Trier from when he was a kid in Seattle.

Trier comments on Durant

“Our relationship has gone all the way through, even until now,” Trier said via the New York Post. “We text, talk and keep in touch all the time. He’s my role model. And if I need anything, I can talk to him — not just about basketball but life.”

10) The NBA would LOVE Durant in NY.. Huge TV Market. HUGE Prime Time games in NY again.. NY-Boston. NY-Philly.
NY-LA games.. NY plays Golden State...WHAT ??? !!!!!!!!!!!!

There are PLENTY of reasons Durant should consider NY..

that doesnt mean he will.. but fans should readily dismiss the idea that he wont consider it..

Run what price up? He is going to get a max contract no matter where he goes.

TyreeHelmet : 11/14/2018 11:04 am : link
I don’t see the DC move. He’s spoken in the past about not wanting to play in his hometown and I’ve heard this is a common feeling among players. And Wall is becoming one of the if not the worst contract in the league. And if you move Beal or Porter, that takes away the appeal.

I could see the Clippers but not because of Ballmer over Dolan. That has such a small if any impact. And does he really want to play 2nd fiddle to the Lakers and Lebron.

I think the Knicks have a good shot. Some work needs to be done but they have a chance. I’m sure there will be other options no one is talking about, bu when there’s this much smoke around a story in the NBA, there is usually fire i.e Lebron to the Lakers.
Durant
Lines of Scrimmage : 11/14/2018 11:20 am : link
I understand the negative view of the Knicks with Dolan as owner. I am much more a NFL and Giant fan.

However, I still think NYC gets the most excited when they have a championship caliber team. I loved the Riley years.

There is no place like the Garden when NY knows they have a championship team. The legacy that Durant would have if he were to win here or any star for that matter would be immeasurable imo. It certainly would mitigate some of the negative views on Durant although I am not one who shares the negative perception on him

but Otto is a glue guy who is paid like a superstar. He is owed 55 mill over the next two seasons. I live in the area so i watch a good amount of the Wiz. Otto is pretty much what we thought he would be when he came out, he is a solid all around player who excels at nothing. I know this will sound like im trashing him, but to make a knicks reference he is essentially a rich mans lance thomas. Which is useful, but he should be making like 13-15 mill max, not 26.

I dont buy Durant to WAS, Wiz didnt even get a meeting with him when he was a FA. I think this is someones guess and since he is from the area they are throwing WAS in the mix. Plus this Wiz team is a mess, Beal and Wall are not a good duo, they dont work at all together.

they were in a tough spot with Porter. If I recall correctly they were close to capped out so if they didn't match they had no way to replace him. Plus he was still young enough that there was reason to think he would improve and his best years were ahead of him. But yeah - his production is currently not in line with his salary.

my guess is if the knicks..
Italianju : 11/14/2018 1:04 pm : link
got KD then KP might be a bit more willing. Or you use knox as your backup at the 3 and the 4 and he can still get 30ish minutes. Plus a lot of teams have real shit SG's and/or C's so KP can play a bit C against those teams and Knox could play a bit of SG. I mean you dont want to keep changing your starting lineup, but starting lineups are really not that important.

With KP this team is nowhere near number one pick status. Not even close. They would have won 37 or so games last year with KP in the lineup.

Are you really suggesting that a lineup consisting of KP and Durant and some other decent vets isn’t winning 50 games in their sleep?

Raved about him in interviews (this was after Brooks was Wizards coach)

of project. Maybe if KP came back early and we made a run at the playoffs, maybe. This team will be much closer to the #1 pick than it will the playoffs. We are a year or two from enticing a star, IMO.

With KP this team is nowhere near number one pick status. Not even close. They would have won 37 or so games last year with KP in the lineup.

Are you really suggesting that a lineup consisting of KP and Durant and some other decent vets isn’t winning 50 games in their sleep?

Thats not even close to what I was suggesting.

Is it wrong that I'm hoping Westbrook plays tonight?
JustaDiscussion : 11/14/2018 1:59 pm : link
I want Mudiay to have to play defense. I'm hoping that Mudiay either shows some sort of progress or he gets run off of the floor.

I'm also curious as to why Knox is staring. I actually think it's a good thing to do, it just seems to conflict with Fizdale stating that players need to earn it. I don't think Knox has earned anything so far in the regular season. I still have hope for him down the road, but his defence, shot selection, and lack of passing are hard to watch. Hopefully Knox realizes how much work he still needs to put in and how much his game has to change in order for him to be effective.
One other thing
TyreeHelmet : 11/14/2018 2:11 pm : link
The Knicks have assets, picks and some cap flexibility to make whatever moves are necessary this offseason. As in, if Durant wants a couple more veterans to play with, they have pieces to move to make it happen. Either through clearing cap to sign guys or trading for them.

I don’t think it’s a lock by estimation. But if he were to leave, I think the Knicks have a good a chance as anyone. I’m worried the Warriors will just trade Green and keep Durant though... I’m not sure whether to root for them to win it again or implode.
i think starters will benefit
nygiants16 : 11/14/2018 2:22 pm : link
from having mudiay and knox, they needed more scoring, and mudiay hopefully will get hardaway and knox open looks..

Knicks have to show KD they can be a championship team
Vanzetti : 11/14/2018 4:47 pm : link
As fans, we get excited by young guys like Frank and Knox, but that doesn't mean anything to a superstar like KD. He has played these guys and dominated them. He is not coming to NY to play with developmental projects.

I also don't think KP's reputation around the league is quite what it is among Knicks fans. I think he is regarded as a top 25 player but not a superstar.

Which leads me to believe Steven A Smith is right: KP has to come back this year and show he is the same player, and someone like Knox has to step forward and show he can be a player in this league. KD has to be convinced that he is the final piece, and I don't see how he could reach that conclusion with the ragtag group the Knicks are currently putting out there.
I
DanMetroMan : 11/14/2018 4:50 pm : link
don't think most fans are excited by Frank right now. Quite the opposite. One of the real negatives is how poor he has looked. Redraft he doesn't go top 10.
If Durant was looking to be the final piece somewhere
Strahan91 : 11/14/2018 4:58 pm : link
he wouldn't leave Golden State. This would be about more than winning championships a la Lebron to LA. Durant's a bit of an odd guy so who knows what he'll be thinking when the time comes. I'm skeptical but if what he's looking for is related to his legacy and he wants to be the alpha dog with the ball in his hands at all times then there's a shot.

I think Knox and Frank are really going to need to step it up. I'm higher on most than Frank but he's shown no improvement on offense this season. Trier/ Dotson/ Mitch will need to continue to improve as the season progresses- not easy to do as very young players.

I go back and forth on whether KP needs to come back. Ideally he comes back for 10-15 games towards the end of the season very cautiously and shows hes fully recovered without effecting the tank too much. Durant and Free agency is a zero sum game and the Knicks need to maximize their chances at top pick in the draft...
If you dropped KD, KP and a top six pick
bceagle05 : 11/14/2018 5:16 pm : link
onto the worst team in the league - the Cavaliers, in this case - they're an immediate contender. This stuff can happen overnight, as we've seen in recent years with Miami and Boston. In the Knicks case, point guard would still be a major concern, unless they take a good one in the draft (the Vandy PG seems like the only one who makes the grade). If KD goes elsewhere, you just keep grinding.

This notion that Durant is going tk leave a championship team for the doldrums of the knicks is moronic...

JustaDiscussion : 11/14/2018 10:52 pm : link
We knew this going in. It takes players time to develop, with the occasional anomaly. It just so happens that the NBA had two rookies last year in Tatum and Mitchell who played far above the average rookie. Maybe that skewed the expectations for some.

I haven't lost any hope for the Knicks going forward, at least yet. Granted I didn't expect them to seriously compete for much for at least 3-5 years, assuming they aren't able to get any legitimate free agents, so for me nothing much has changed. I still think KP, Frank, Trier, Knox, Dotson, and Robinson could turn out to be good to great players if developed properly.

Granted, I admit it's hard to watch young players struggle whether it's expected or not. It's even harder to watch the THjr and Kanter's of he world play just well enough to steel minutes from younger players but not well enough to compete for anything.

That all being said, I'm not going to worry about the future of the Knicks until they make some dumb off season moves or unless all of these kids still play like this in 2 or 3 seasons.

He is the best talent they have. At some point you have to start building around someone. If you trade him your just hoping to use the picks gained to draft someone of his caliber anyway so I don't see the advantage of trading him at this point. Can't kick the rebuild down the road forever.

but the reality is they're gonna knock these remaining 67 games off the calendar, make their draft pick and throw money at whoever is willing to take it.

Mills and Perry are confident they can develop players and attract free agents - they'll have opportunities to prove it.
