I really enjoyed it. Some critics are nitpicking it a bit, but I thought the actor was fantastic. My wife is a huge fan and was crying at the end of the movie.

Rami Malek was fantastic, IMO.

I think that you could cry either from the nostalgia or just the stepping up from the troubles to the show-stealing performance at Live Aid.

She loves Queens music and she absolutely loves the Live Aid performance and she felt it was a flawless performance. That they got every detail right. She also felt that the actor was Freddie.
Being a huge Queen fan from the beginning....I couldn't wait to see it

Especially following Brian May's blog for the last 10 years of so, he was updating us on it from the beginning...when Sasha Baron Cohen was playing the Freddie character before he was fired.

I thought the movie was good and the acting was great, especially by Malek. Mike Myers playing the record exec who basically told the group no-one would play Bo Rhap on the radio because it wasn't a head-banging song....after his great Bo Rhap head banging scene in Wayne's World was great!

There were some liberties taken, but that was okay. It was worth it to see the movie and re-experience the greatness they portrayed on record, live and especially at Live Aid.
I think I read that there was a lot of Freddie in Malek's performances
Bill L : 11/14/2018 2:44 pm : link
they mixed voices plus Rami did a bunch of lip synching to Freddie.
Thought it was very good

Of course, the music is phenomenal. Malek's performance is great and the story is good. Certainly worth the price of admission.

I didn't realize it was Mike Myers until they zoomed into his face, when he was bitching about the song being 6 minutes long.

Mind you going into the movie she didnt realize Queen sang "We will rock you" song.

She thought it was awesome and got emotional when he told the group that he had AIDS.

I kind of got teary eyed when he hugged his father.
I recall the whole split
Pete in MD : 11/14/2018 3:25 pm : link
between Queen and Sacha Baron Cohen, who apparently had been trying to make a movie about Freddie for a long time, is that he wanted to show the whole picture of the man and band, even the dark spots. The band wanted it to be more triumphant.

Any comments on where this one landed from those who say it?

I was a big fan. It was a fun movie and I thought they did very well with most of the concert sets, especially the Live Aid ending. They nailed it, all the way down the the Pepsi and beer cups on the piano Mercury was playing.

As a huge Rami Malek fan, I thought he killed his role as Freddie.
I'm one of the few that
Gman11 : 11/14/2018 3:36 pm : link
didn't think it was anything special. Typical movie about a singer/performer. He rises to prominence then falls then rises again. Been there. Seen that. The concert scenes were good, but if that's all you want go to YouTube and see the real thing. The whole Live Aid session is on YouTube.

The music makes the movie, but as a story it was kind of meh.

That's pretty cool. Mike Myers and Wayne's World brought the song to a whole new generation in the early '90's. It actually reached higher on the Billboard Charts in 1992 than it did when originally released. It's back on the Hot 100 for a third time because of the movie release.

My wife had no idea about the leach that was Freddy's first partner.

I did some reading which said that that part was embellished or distorted quite a bit. And, of course the other guy died (of AIDS-related disease) so he can't quite rebut his depiction.

one of the band members (probably May) actually wanted Mercury to die in the middle of the movie. When Sasha pressed him on this, thinking maybe it was some interesting Pulp Fiction-y way to tell the story, the band remember replied that the second half of the movie should be about how Queen overcame his death and lived on.

LOL.

I love Brian May's work, but holy crap. lol I guess he didn't get the memo that while his guitar style was unique, there's no Queen without Freddie.

My wife and daughter saw it with friends Sunday. LOVED it. My wife didn't live in the U.S. most of those years Queen was prominent. She knew the hits but not the albums so much. On Monday morning (we were both off work) I pulled a box of my old albums from the top shelf in the living room closet. Had 4 Queen albums in there ... one was 42 years old. I've been treated to all those deeper cuts now for the past few evenings (save for a few hours during the Giants game). Forgot about some of them. Great stuff.

There wasn’t a coherent story and they completely rewrote history.

Among the fiction:

Freddy Mercury knew May, Taylor and Staffell when Smile were still around — the four of them even shared an apartment
Mike Myers character is fictional and seemed to be there only for the Wayne’s World inside joke.
Queen had just finished a tour before Live Aid
Various members of Queen did solo albums in the early 80s
Geldof said Queen would play Live Aid before asking them
Freddie Mercury didn’t tell the band he had AIDS until 1987 or 1988

The movie is basically a tribute to Mercury from his band mates. Which is way Sacha Baron Cohen pulled out of the project.

And they didn’t show the bad Queen songs.. Flash Gordon and the songs in Highlander.

Malek of course killed it. He does it in every role- the Pacific and Mr Robot.

Felt mostly the same. I enjoyed the movie, but it was a bad biopic. I know that things are going to be changed, and I can get over some stuff (like him knowing Smile), but the AIDS/LiveAid connection annoyed me. My girlfriend came out sobbing and when I dropped the bomb that he hadn't been diagnosed with aids yet her response was "oh... what a shitty thing to lie about".

Queen made the movie for themselves. They made Brian May/Roger Taylor look like angels (family men who never partied) and Freddie had this evil side that corrupted everything and was the only prima-dona in the band.

Once again; it's entertaining. I would even see it again. Good movie, bad biopic.
there's a lot of covering up within the band
feelflows : 11/15/2018 11:14 am : link
of certain details and facts:

Freddie's best friend, Mary Austin:

"Freddie lived with the knowledge chat he was HIV positive for seven years, but it was some time before he confided to his closest friends how ill he might become if AIDS developed. When he did, he demanded that his illness be kept a secret."

That's from OK Magazine, March 17 2000 http://www.freddie.ru/e/archives/ok/

That puts him into 1984, but it's "general knowledge" that he found out in 1987. I would take Mary Austin for her word, as she was his closest friend.

So if her facts are straight HE knew before Live Aid. The band has always said they found out during the recording of Miracle (1989ish?).

Basically, what I'm getting at is.. there are no truths or facts to the real story. It's all hearsay at this point, so why not take liberties if you're the movie's director and make it as dramatic as possible?

It's also been widely speculated that he knew in 1984, but still lived a very promiscuous lifestyle, and infecting a lot of men... but that's a darker topic for another day.

It's not accurate b/c the facts are completely changed. See my earlier post. The band did that on purpose to tell the story they wanted to tell rather than the actual story of the band.
