NFT: NYC Dinner Recommendations (Family) Requested

pjcas18 : 11/14/2018 4:26 pm
looking for a recommendation for my family - the first weekend in December.

Usually we go to Carmines, but looking for a change.

Staying in Times Square, but we'd uber somewhere in the vicinity if it was worth it.

type of food would be italian, american, burgers, or other (I know pretty narrow). Not a steak house since my kids are not big steak eaters.

best choice would take reservations (realizing many places that take reservations will already be booked).

Also, to save some people the time, Olive Garden and Sbarro are already booked, they were my first choice.
The company I work for owns 2 buildings on west 46th so-
DanMetroMan : 11/14/2018 4:35 pm : link
- Becco (delicious Italian food)

-Lillie's Victorian British/American, a fun look/vibe

-Bea (small plates, delicious food)

-Toloache, lively above average Mexican

-Victor's Cuban food, live music, fun vibe
If you guys like meat...
jcn56 : 11/14/2018 4:40 pm : link
hit up Churrascaria Plataforma - short walk, but lots of fun (and lots of meat). Brazilian BBQ NYC style.

Italian recommendations
Drewcon40 : 11/14/2018 4:41 pm : link
Italian:
- La Masseria or Masseria dei Vini (same owner different locale)
- Val Bella (also 2 locations) - Meatpacking and Midtown
- Becco

For you PJ?
what about this?
Bah, just re-read, missed the steak part the first time
jcn56 : 11/14/2018 4:42 pm : link
How old are the kids?
Thanks
pjcas18 : 11/14/2018 4:43 pm : link
guys. LOL drewcon, I don't really get along with most habs fans. The American ones I do, but some of the Canadian ones are assholes.

16, 16, and 11, they eat meat, just I was thinking not a Sparks, Gallaghers, Keen's, Delmonico's etc, kind place which would be my go-to if I were there for work
Have you ever been to Marchi's
Pete in MD : 11/14/2018 4:50 pm : link
in Murray Hill area? It's an interesting place. My wife's family has been going there for years so we often go when in NYC. It's old-school family style Italian place that serves the same five-course meal to every table. There are no menus because you don't have any choice aside from the drinks. It's not everyone's cup of tea. I personally love it, it's like going through a time warp but others I went with were not impressed.

Becco has been mentioned already
MadPlaid : 11/14/2018 4:54 pm : link
so I just want to put in that I agree with the recommendation. Terrific food, and very quick service. They do an excellent job making certain you don't miss the start of any Broadway show you have tickets for.

My mom always recommends it... having gone years and years ago but every time I look at Yelp the reviews are really, really bad. Same with Rolph's. Best "old school" place in my book is Sevilla. Love that place.

too casual for you but since you mentioned burgers, Bill's Bar and Burger in Rockefeller Center is perfectly acceptable bar food and fine for kids. Or Naples 45 for Italian in the MetLife building. It's walking distance from Times Square but far enough from the mega crowds. I've taken my kids to both and they both take reservations.
Thank you for the

There was a place sort of similar this in Worcester, didn't last long. Mainly a bar though (the link you sent looks like they do a good food business). I'm as big a bacon fan as anyone, but the bacon infused drinks just weren't a hit, or maybe Worcester is just too blue color to like bacon themed drinks if that makes any sense.

Bar Bacon is closer to a bar than a true "gastropub" in that the bar sits in the middle of the restaurant and they do have a large % of people who come in just for drinks. The food is very good if you like that kind of thing. Bacon mac and cheese, bacon bloody mary etc. They recently opened a second location down by me but I've yet to go. I def wouldn't call it high end but it's a nice setting with good/inventive bar grub.

qualifies for a family dinner, John's of Times Square (44th/8th) is really good.

How about Burger & Lobster? There is one near Time Sq.

I don't think it meets the criteria of the modern "foodie" culture in NYC. It's an experience. The food is solid but pretty simple but the decor is outdated. The outdoor seating is really nice but obviously not open in December. I think it also might be somewhat overpriced. Apparently, you had to make a reservation months in advance in the '70s.
If you are into seafood this is the place
Stan in LA : 11/14/2018 5:48 pm : link

Wow, Sevilla! That's also a favorite of my wife's family. They make giant bowls of paella. I was only there one time but remember it being good.
Depending on how old the kids are
Matt M. : 11/14/2018 6:17 pm : link
you may like Bmue Smoke, which isn't far by cab. It's BBQ with a nice kids menu whcih includes a dessert plus decorating a raw cookie shaped like a pig that they bake for you to take home.

For adults they have good ribs, brisket, etc.
If you don’t mind trekking down to the village

L’Artusi is fantastic. Among my favorite restaurants in the city.
Since you're in Times Square
Gmanfandan : 11/14/2018 6:35 pm : link
Brooklyn Diner has the type of food you're looking for (but better) and takes reservations.

Another good one is PJ Clarkes near Lincoln Center (also takes reservations.
5 Napkin Burger

There are a few them in the city, I’ve been to the one near the theatre district. It’s a good burger place. You can google the locations and the menu.
Most teen wagers love pizza
DavidinBMNY : 11/14/2018 10:16 pm : link
John's in times square is famous. We will sometimes take the kids to patys and then dillons. Those are right next to each other in the east 60s.

If you wanted a bit of history you could try PJ Clarke's. Your kids might be old enough to appreciate that mantle Gifford and other greats hung out there.

The b.r.guest restaurants are all pretty safe. Ruby food is fun. I saw Hannah Graham in one of them and Jeter in another - granted this is years ago.

Virgils is fun and in the area right by caemine's. So is Ben's deli.

But if I was going anywhere I would do hop kee in China town for an early lunch, puts a around down there and then hit little Italy for a daily double.

If it had to be More local I would pick of the more upscale pizza places since it will have regular Italians well.

Great Paella and sangria. Classic NY vibe. Really like that place.
