looking for a recommendation for my family - the first weekend in December.
Usually we go to Carmines, but looking for a change.
Staying in Times Square, but we'd uber somewhere in the vicinity if it was worth it.
type of food would be italian, american, burgers, or other (I know pretty narrow). Not a steak house since my kids are not big steak eaters.
best choice would take reservations (realizing many places that take reservations will already be booked).
Also, to save some people the time, Olive Garden and Sbarro are already booked, they were my first choice.
-Lillie's Victorian British/American, a fun look/vibe
-Bea (small plates, delicious food)
-Toloache, lively above average Mexican
-Victor's Cuban food, live music, fun vibe

- La Masseria or Masseria dei Vini (same owner different locale)
- Val Bella (also 2 locations) - Meatpacking and Midtown
- Becco
For you PJ?
what about this?
16, 16, and 11, they eat meat, just I was thinking not a Sparks, Gallaghers, Keen's, Delmonico's etc, kind place which would be my go-to if I were there for work

My mom always recommends it... having gone years and years ago but every time I look at Yelp the reviews are really, really bad. Same with Rolph's. Best "old school" place in my book is Sevilla. Love that place.

There was a place sort of similar this in Worcester, didn't last long. Mainly a bar though (the link you sent looks like they do a good food business). I'm as big a bacon fan as anyone, but the bacon infused drinks just weren't a hit, or maybe Worcester is just too blue color to like bacon themed drinks if that makes any sense.

Bar Bacon is closer to a bar than a true "gastropub" in that the bar sits in the middle of the restaurant and they do have a large % of people who come in just for drinks. The food is very good if you like that kind of thing. Bacon mac and cheese, bacon bloody mary etc. They recently opened a second location down by me but I've yet to go. I def wouldn't call it high end but it's a nice setting with good/inventive bar grub.
How about Burger & Lobster? There is one near Time Sq.
Love that place

in Murray Hill area? It's an interesting place. My wife's family has been going there for years so we often go when in NYC. It's old-school family style Italian place that serves the same five-course meal to every table. There are no menus because you don't have any choice aside from the drinks. It's not everyone's cup of tea. I personally love it, it's like going through a time warp but others I went with were not impressed. Link - ( New Window )

I don't think it meets the criteria of the modern "foodie" culture in NYC. It's an experience. The food is solid but pretty simple but the decor is outdated. The outdoor seating is really nice but obviously not open in December. I think it also might be somewhat overpriced. Apparently, you had to make a reservation months in advance in the '70s.
Mon-Sat, 11:30am-9:30pm*; Sun, closed.
*Reservations accepted until 9:00pm.

Wow, Sevilla! That's also a favorite of my wife's family. They make giant bowls of paella. I was only there one time but remember it being good.
For adults they have good ribs, brisket, etc.
Another good one is PJ Clarkes near Lincoln Center (also takes reservations.
If you wanted a bit of history you could try PJ Clarke's. Your kids might be old enough to appreciate that mantle Gifford and other greats hung out there.
The b.r.guest restaurants are all pretty safe. Ruby food is fun. I saw Hannah Graham in one of them and Jeter in another - granted this is years ago.
Virgils is fun and in the area right by caemine's. So is Ben's deli.
But if I was going anywhere I would do hop kee in China town for an early lunch, puts a around down there and then hit little Italy for a daily double.
If it had to be More local I would pick of the more upscale pizza places since it will have regular Italians well.

Great Paella and sangria. Classic NY vibe. Really like that place.
