BBI Old Game Review- 1991 Giants @ Bucs

Matt in SGS : 11/15/2018 12:33 pm
With the Giants vs. Tampa game coming up this weekend, why not go back to a previous game when the Giants had a very meaningful contest against the Bucs in Tampa.

This was the game in which we saw the Simms vs. Hostetler argument play out in front of us. Ray Handley made the decision to start Hoss in the 1991 season and sat Simms on the bench. To Simms' credit, he didn't make waves and was supportive, if not happy.

The Giants struggled under Handley, but for a stretch in 1991, with the Redskins running away with the division, the Giants got back in the playoff hunt and needed to win against a bad Bucs team. But Tampa gave the Giants all they could handle, and in the process a hit on Hoss ended up fracturing a bone in his back and brought Simms off the bench. In this case, Simms, showing little rust would lead a dramatic late win, passing up the field goal and going to Baker for the winning TD.

As always, any other requests, send them my way.

Enjoy!

Hoss starting over Simms was so freaking idiotic.

Really cool.

I enjoyed some of your quick notes next to the games you have, for example Giants vs Philly 2010 " Matt Dodge..ugh" lol.

Question, have you ever presented a loss? I know, it's way more fun to remember the good times but just curious. I was thinking of the 2002 Titans game but I don't think you have it anyway.

The 2007 Eagles/Osi game would be fun next week if you had the time.

Thanks for these.
I took my dad to this game

The old Sombrero and man was it a dump. Sat on uncomfortable metal benches. It is safe to say that the crowd was 70% Giants fans that day. A few things that stuck out was Testaverde falling down on the snap and everyone in the stands laughing at him. He wasn't well thought of back then. Also the crowd showing some disrespect to Hoss when he fractured his back because they wanted Simms. I don't remember it as a great game for the Giants even though the outcome was favorable. I will say the long drive back to Fort Lauderdale was a good one after a victory
I was living in Florida then and drove to the game.

I remember telling some Bucs’ fans that their fortunes were about to change with Parcells coming there to coach. Then he left Culverhouse at the Altar.

Also, that’s where I met a fan who turned me on to ‘Inside Football’.
Simms came into the game in a relief role

Ha, thanks, yeah, I threw those little reminders in there.

I have thought about reviewing a loss, haven't done it yet, but might do it in the offseason. And I can look to do the 7 sack Osi game. I have another one in the works now that should be done in a few days.
Great stuff Matt!
