Colleges/Draft

Breer MMQB: 2019 NFL Draft Big Board 1.0: Nick Bosa No. 1, Justin Herbert Top QB at No. 13

“If you root for the Jets or the Bucs or the Browns, or another team hovering on the fringes of prime draft position, you may be tempted to root for some post-Thanksgiving losses. In some years, especially those with bumper crops of quarterbacks coming, there’s real validity to the idea. Our advice to those good people: Don’t bother, not this year.”

“This is not a top–10 type of draft,” adds an AFC college scouting director. “To me, there are a lot pass rushers and D-linemen, but I don’t know that there’s anyone that compares to, say, Bradey Chubb, if you take [Nick] Bosa out of it.“

Starting to hear names of underclassmen QBs that want in the 2019 draft class. Players are aware that they don't want to compete with Tua and Fromm in 2020 and could jump early to potentially go higher this year with less top-end competition

Greg Larson C/RG/RT D6-Minnesota 1961 NYG 1961-1973 11-15-1961

Larson started at RT in the 1961 Championship Game; RG in the 1962 Championship Game and C in the 1963 Championship Game

1963 Profile: Greg Larson

Center
No. 53
Minnesota
"The baby face is deceptive - Greg Larson is a rough blocker who has much going for him: desire, quickness and the ability to understand the subtleties of interior play.
After two years at offensive guard and tackle, he steps into Ray Wietecha's boots at center. That was his old job at the U. of Minnesota.
Gorgeous Greg (don't call him that to his face) lives in Minneapolis."

1964 Profile: Greg Larson

Center
No. 53
Minnesota
"Pass blocking and knocking down linebackers are the main weekly pursuits practiced by Greg Larson.
The coaching staff felt he was ready to replace Ray Wietecha at center and were happy to move him back to a position he'd been trained to play since high school. A No. 6 draft choice for '61, he was forced into a tackle spot on offense and then was moved over to guard for '62, proving his balanced abilities and versatility at executing the many different moves required from each position. When Wietecha left for a coaching job with the Rams, Larson merely moved back to his old station in '63."

-Don Schiffer, Pro Football 1964

"A 6'3", 250-pound graduate of Minnesota, Greg became the Giants' starting offensive center last season after old-pro Ray Wietecha retired to join the Rams' coaching staff. Occasionally criticized for faulty pass protection in previous years when was when he was positioned elsewhere in the interior offensive line, Larson blossomed, as so often happens, when he was given a job he could call his own. Coach Allie Sherman says flatly that, 'Greg developed into a top pro center in one season.' "

-Bill Wise, 1964 Official Pro Football Almanac

"When Ray Wietecha retired following the 1962 season, everyone thought the Giants would have themselves a problem at center. Everyone but Allie Sherman, that is. All he did was turn the post over to Greg Larson, who's done an ace-high job ever since and figures to keep on doing so for many moons to come.
Originally picked sixth by the Giants in '61 as a center, Greg was used at tackle in his rookie campaign, winning a starting nod. He moved to guard in '62 and played the post like he was born to it, before transferring to his present spot.
Larson was the center and linebacker for Minnesota's 1961 Rose Bowl club."

GREG LARSON

Minnesota
"As long as Ray Wietecha was performing his iron man stunt for the Giants, they had no serious plans about letting Greg Larson play his natural position of center; so he was converted to a tackle in 1961 and won a starting job on the offensive line. The next year he was shifted to guard, and again did an outstanding job for the division title winners.
Greg finally got to be a pivot in 1963 when Wietecha retired, and that's where he's been ever since, except for the knee injury which knocked him out of the lineup last season, and which required surgery. If the knee is all right - and it's always a big 'if' where the knee is concerned - the Giants will be fine at center.
Greg played his college ball at Minnesota and was a sixth-round draft pick."

GREG LARSON

Minnesota
"Centers don't ordinarily set records unless it's for longevity and endurance, but Greg Larson has probably achieved a medical first.
Torn knee ligaments he suffered in a game in 1964 were repaired by surgery, but the damage was so severe doctors predicted he wouldn't regain full mobility. But Greg put himself on a spartan rehabilitation program which strengthened the knee enough for him to return to action by mid-season of 1965. And last year he was running at full speed once again.
A seven-year veteran, he's a selfless type who played tackle and guard before room finally was made for him at center. His recovery, says Allie Sherman, 'was a tribute to his determination.' "

-Jack Zanger, Pro Football 1967

1971 Profile: Greg Larson

"Seven years ago, when Greg Larson had to undergo serious knee surgery, it appeared that his football career was at an end. It took the Giants' 250-pound center nearly a season to get back into playing shape, but Greg was determined to make it back and is still going strong.
This will Greg's be 11th pro season- all with the Giants- and he's considered one of the most underrated blocking centers in the league.
A center and linebacker on Minnesota's 1961 Rose Bowl team, Larson was drafted sixth by New York the following season."

"Harland first played for the Rams in '53 after his career at Washington State. He's a first quality linebacker who can also fill in at guard and end.
Harland lives in Los Angeles where he fusses with sports cars."

-Pro Football Handbook 1959

Former professional football player does his best to hold onto memories, love of the game 6-8-2017

“Svare can still recall picking off Philadelphia's Norm Van Brocklin in the 1959 game and returning the interception more than 70 yards to score a touchdown that tied the contest at  7-7. The Giants went on to win the game 24-7.
"Norm followed me down the field and said, 'You should have scored I led you just right,’" Svare said.
Svare's football career began in 1953 when the Los Angles Rams drafted the tight-end in the 17th round. When he arrived in camp, the team asked him to play linebacker, but he also continued to play tight-end. Svare played two seasons with the Rams before being traded to the New York Giants.
Back then, the game was different, Savre said. There were fewer teams in the league, and many of the exploits off the field were legendary and not fit to be printed in the newspaper.
Svare played and worked with Vince Lombardi and played for Tom Landry during his time in New York.
When his playing days came to an end, Svare was hired to coach the Los Angeles Rams at the age of 31 years, 11 months, making him the youngest coach in NFL history at the time.”
