I know there are some really knowledgeable techies on here. I am not really a techie and tried to research this, but was unsure if it was worth the extra money or just get a regular 4k UHD. If anyone has an opinion a lay person can understand, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
From what I remember LG has the patent on OLED, but they allowed Sony to use the tech in their QLED. The Sony was more expensive for some reason when we bought our 65" LG OLED.
OLED is more expensive, and better quality. I'm waiting on the larger OLED sets to get cheaper (as production expands and the technology to produce becomes more efficient). QLED and other backlit LEDs are definitely a tier below.
The lifespan of a TV should be much longer than any of the 'smart' components. It's like the audio/nav system in a car; the car is built to last over 10 years, and the electronics inside the cabin are outdated on day 1, by 5 years in they're like relics.
On a TV, if you get at least 8 years out of it - those smart apps if not very well supported by the vendor will be ridiculously out of date. And even with support, hardware requirements for streaming video and networking tend to change every few years, so the hardware would become a limiting factor quickly anyway.

Just ignore the crap that’s built in and plug in a Roku.

I build HTPCs for my TVs, so I do ignore it - but I hate having to pay for it, and make no mistake, you're paying for it.
