NFT: QLED Samung?

Essex : 11/15/2018 1:47 pm
I know there are some really knowledgeable techies on here. I am not really a techie and tried to research this, but was unsure if it was worth the extra money or just get a regular 4k UHD. If anyone has an opinion a lay person can understand, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
I consider myself a lay person

a TV?
OLED is the best quality out there, but its pricey

Samsung's QLED is basically still the same tech as LED tvs (which is basically the same tech as LCDs...but I digress). I don't think QLED is sufficiently above LED to justify a significant price difference. But if you like the picture quality and are a fan of samsung and/or the price difference is small enough then you might think its worth it.
Get an LG OLED instead

After many hours of viewing the Samsung QLED side-by-side with the LG OLED. I would take the LG OLED every time. It produces the deepest blacks I have ever seen, and to me the overall picture, though not as bright as the Samsung is better. Go to your local Best Buy and stand there and watch the two side-by-side, then come back and tell me your preference.
Not worth the price yet

probably won’t be for another couple of years. Until sports are broadcast in 4K more widely the upgrade to OLED or QLED is minimal. A standard 4K set from a reputable manufacturer is all you need and even then it’s overkill based on the lack of compatible content.

If you have a dark room, get an OLED. If you have a bright room, get a QLED.
I recently purchased an LG OLED
mikeygiants : 11/15/2018 2:29 pm : link
and the 4G content is fantastic. Viewing angles are superior, but the light in the room is definitely an issue.

From what I remember LG has the patent on OLED, but they allowed Sony to use the tech in their QLED. The Sony was more expensive for some reason when we bought our 65" LG OLED.

Two completely different technologies
jcn56 : 11/15/2018 4:09 pm : link
OLED is emissive - the pixels put out their own light. QLED is like any other LCD panel with a backlight.

OLED is more expensive, and better quality. I'm waiting on the larger OLED sets to get cheaper (as production expands and the technology to produce becomes more efficient). QLED and other backlit LEDs are definitely a tier below.
I got the Samsung.

The price difference was just worth the LG. No regrets. Amazing picture and good audio.

I was forced to put a roku on my smart samsung TV to order MLB. I have all samsung TVs (4) in house but I will never buy a samsung again!
I hate that televisions have latched onto smart features

as a selling point. IMO, they're just about worthless.

The lifespan of a TV should be much longer than any of the 'smart' components. It's like the audio/nav system in a car; the car is built to last over 10 years, and the electronics inside the cabin are outdated on day 1, by 5 years in they're like relics.

On a TV, if you get at least 8 years out of it - those smart apps if not very well supported by the vendor will be ridiculously out of date. And even with support, hardware requirements for streaming video and networking tend to change every few years, so the hardware would become a limiting factor quickly anyway.
I'm pissed...

that NO ONE has continued to engineer a set with true PIP.

Just ignore the crap that’s built in and plug in a Roku.

I build HTPCs for my TVs, so I do ignore it - but I hate having to pay for it, and make no mistake, you're paying for it.
