I've been a professional guitarist for 45 years - everything from solo, coffee houses, folk trio, classic rock bands, weddings, proms ... Roy Clark (and believe it or not) Glen Campbell were 2 of the most textbook guitarists I've studied. As goofy as he came off at times, god was he a gifted player. RIP Roy.
RIP Roy Clark

What an entertainer
If you have never heard Roy play Malaguena,
Red Dog : 11/15/2018 6:18 pm : link
you owe it to yourself to find it somewhere and give a listen.

If you are not familiar with it, Malaguena is classical guitar music from Isaac Albinez, which illustrates the span of Roy Clark's repertoire. I've also heard him play Russian folk music on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry as well as his country treatments of many pop songs.

As a music fan and amateur guitarist who is friends with some pros and other really good musicians, I’ve always admired ol’ Roy and heard nothing but the highest praise for him. He will be missed.
I always got the feeling he was underrated as a guitar player.

Maybe it was because "Hee Haw" was kind of on the goofy side? But, he was great ... not many had the technique he had.

Giant24 - thanks for the link. that was great.

RIP Mr. Clark

Just a great American icon, musician and entertainer

Roy played "Yesterday When I Was Young" at Mantle's funeral at his request. I still have a tape of the funeral.
Wow...

Roy Clark's natural good humor...

...and sunny/smiling/comedic disposition fooled a lot of people. His clowning around gave the impression he was just a funny guy who also played the guitar, banjo, ukulele, etc. It was almost as though Roy Clark didn't want to let on that he was a very serious professional musician.

Just a wonderful person!
