NFT: Snowblower etiquette

What's the earliest it's acceptable to start the snowblower? I waited until 7:00am this morning and I was definitely the first one out

as early as needed to get to work

whether its weekend/weekday.

If you're just an early riser that wants to get it over with, then not before 8-9 am on weekends.
Did someone say Snowblower

work, on the weekend or weekdays. If you're not working, then I'd be good with 7 on the weekend. I'm up. :)
My take
Jim Bur(n)t : 11/16/2018 9:52 am : link
Workday - Whenever u need to blow.

Weekend - 9am+ .

Similarly, I've had a neighbor who mowed (past tense) their lawn @ 8 am on a Sat or Sun... Walked outside & ripped him a new one, as it's my only time to get extra sleep. Its fucking rude.
If someone is not up by 7am on a weekday..
EricJ : 11/16/2018 9:55 am : link
then dont worry about those people anyway.

As long as your two next door neighbors do not have shift work where they may be sleeping.... well, then they may be sleeping at 10am too.

Why shouldn't "grown adults" sleep past 7 am?

When it comes to the snowblower, people do what they have to do to get to work. 7am is far more deferential than you need to be during a work week.
I am a very considerate person,
Keith : 11/16/2018 10:25 am : link
I always think of other people. There are plenty of reasons people might sleep past 7 or 8 other than them being lazy bums. I would agree that 7 is more than ok when you are talking about getting to work. Personally, I would never do it before 9/10 on a weekend if I wasn't working. Again though, I am a considerate person.

^^^ this. I work late, and often times sleep past 7. I am not lazy, I am a responsible adult who runs a successful business. With that being said, I would never complain about my neighbor digging out to get to work in the morning. I guess that another aspect of maturity is realizing that not all people are on the same schedule.
I fire mine up at 5:30 on weekdays.

I think that there is a difference between snowblowing and lawn mowing
Bill L : 11/16/2018 12:02 pm : link
You have to be able to leave your house to go about your life, so the time you remove slow has to be your choice and your neighbors have to either accommodate it or just live with it or cry into their cornflakes. You shouldn't be stuck inside your house merely because your neighbors need REM. Plus, while it's not a rare event, it's an occasional one. It's just how life works. Plus, plus...snow is not static. It can accumulate more, making it that much more difficult to remove, it can change texture or density with time and become either more difficult to remove or become more dangerous.

Mowing your lawn is a chore. It needs to be done, but it's static to some degree, so it's always going to be there with pretty much the same effort to remove. It's also not something where if you don't do it right away, your ability to work or leave your house is not impeded. And, as a chore, it's routine. It's nature allows you to take your neighbor's lives into consideration. All within reason. You can't always accommodate people with offset schedules or sensitivities. You still have to live your life even while trying to get along.

8am on a Saturday? I don't give a fuck about your "only time to get extra sleep." Fuck your sleep. You ain't king of the neighborhood no matter what you tell yourself.
I don't think that 8:00 AM is out of line for a Saturday mowing

Don’t know about up there but down here in Florida I mow at 8 am if you don’t like it to f’ing bad. Have to be done by 11 otherwise it’s way to brutal out in the sun. Had a neighbor like you once he even called and complained to the cops they told him if he didn’t like it get ear plugs
Municipalities typically have pretty well stated rules
Beezer : 11/16/2018 12:28 pm : link
on such things. Noise ordinances, etc.

That said, purely from an etiquette standpoint, my take is like several others': if you've gotta get out to get to work, do what you need to do. Your neighbors will deal.

I'm fortunate enough to work for people who, when I texted them this morning, one said "if you're caught up, don't bother coming in" and the other, "I'm taking a personal day, and so is X and Y," so it's your call."

I got the snowblower going around 8:30, cleared the sidewalks for 3 neighbors on our side of the street, did the driveway and the back parking area, went in and had some coffee, got to work at about 10:45. Gonna get two project loose ends tied up by maybe 2-3 and head out.

I don't make a shitload of money, but sometimes flexibility makes up for it, and then some.
And without looking it up,
Beezer : 11/16/2018 12:29 pm : link
I think 8 a.m. is the time that you're "legally OK" to mow, trim, snow-blow, etc.

I wish you were my neighbor. My town's noise ordinance is 8:01pm - 7:59am Monday - Saturday, 9:59am Sunday. I mow on Saturdays and I do it as soon as I'm legally allowed to do so. Sounds like we'd have weekly meetings in my front yard.

Exactly. If he was my neighbor I'd fire up the riding mower at 7am. And then for good measure I'd dump my grass clippings on his front porch. Establish dominance.

pjcas18 : 11/16/2018 4:07 pm : link
blowers just got this bad boy. I retired my 14 (?) year old Ariens for a Deluxe 28 SHO. It was a little funny because I walked in to the shop and I told the guy I expected to get more than 8 years out of the Ariens I bought since everyone said they were the best in the business.

The guy said he was surprised, usually they last longer or are fixable.

The guy looks up my account and says if that's the same one you bought from us it was in April of 2004. We delivered i to xxx address, is that the same one? I said, yes, and was pretty embarrassed. No clue why I thought it was newer than that. He also said it was a lower end model (implying I didn't spend a ton on it).

I know it replaced a piece of shit Craftsman that I'm positive now only lasted two years b/c we moved into that house in 2002 and I lived in Boston in an apartment before that.

Anyway, not sorry to miller. And I'll snow blow any god damn time I want. LOL just kidding. I'm respectful of other people unless we have a compelling reason we need to get out. The plows make almost as much noise as the the snow blowers with the scraping and beeping when they back up.

Banks : 11/16/2018 4:13 pm : link
I personally don't care what time a neighbor does house chores at and I say that as someone that used to sleep in pre-kids. It's work that needs to be done and everyone has different schedules and commitments. However if it's recreational like my neighbor that opens his windows and plays the drums from 8pm-12am most nights, you can go fuck yourself with a thorned dildo.
Know your neighbors
AnnapolisMike : 11/16/2018 4:20 pm : link
and adjust accordingly for lawn cutting is probably a good idea. Snowblowing is different...unless your trying to blow under 4 inches of the stuff and then you can wait. Get your shovel before 8am.
You gotta do what you gotta do.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 11/16/2018 4:28 pm : link
While I'm totally aware of how annoying an early morning lawnmower can be, I was out there at least twice last winter shoveling snow at 6:30 in the morning. In a quiet neighborhood, you know that's an annoying sound. But you have to get to work, so what's the alternative? I guess all you can do is keep it to a minimum... only do it when it's 100% absolutely necessary.

Couldn't agree more... Adults who work 9-5 should be awake by 8 am on a Saturday.

A few weekends ago I wanted to have my leaves done before football started at 1, so I fired up my backpack as the sun came up. I want to say I was outside by 7 am. I was fully expecting to get beaten by my neighbors.

chopperhatch : 11/16/2018 5:16 pm : link
There was no chance I would be up before noon if I had to close (walk out the door at 3 am). But I also would not be awaken by stuff like leafblowers or snow blowers. Construction is a completely different story. In Philly, some of the developing neighborhoods where I have lived, I would have circular saws and laborers yelling to each other and fucking music blasting at 7 am and I lost it a couple of times. I dont think construction at 7 is right at all.
